Heads up people crossing at Tecate

Courtesy of the Ventana View: Heads up people crossing at Tecate! As of October 27 at 9am construction at border. Normally you would go through the border and inspection and go straight through the traffic light, not now, construction! Be warned if you go left at the light you continue past more construction which continues until you end up going up an incredibly narrow and STEEP hill! If you are driving anything bigger than an SUV this is a very dangerous and potentially disastrous way to go, you may have to back down because there is nowhere to turn around. I would highly recommend going RIGHT at the lights because left is a disaster and has no road marking for detours. I don't know what is to the right but it has to be better than going left. Bien Viejo.

Came through there just a few days ago and didn't have any issues. Drove the same ways as always and got to the border without any problem. How ever, unless you're familiar with the way to get to the border, it's still the same old Mexican way, incompetent and stupid. No wonder Tecate cops up their quota. But, surprise, surprise. Not a soul at the crossing. First time this has happened in 30 some years of crossing. Even 25 some years ago there were always 2 to 3 cars ahead of us at the old crossing.

The post is referring to crossing Southbound. The road at the bottom of the hill is closed for blocks with no detour signs or consideration for local traffic (I know everybody finds this hard to believe). I went left a couple of times and it would be really bad if you are driving a large vehicle or towing a trailer. I think turning right after crossing and looking for a way around the road destruction would be a good idea.

The Google seems to present options for a go around, but would appreciate current reports about successful circumnavigation from Mex customs South to Mex 3. Will be hauling a small utility trailer and have responsibility as primary navigator.

Hola,

i posted the warning on bloodydecks, a fishing website and here is a response to go around the construction.

this is a copy and paste....

To the right heads west towards Tijuana. You can go a few blocks west then drop down into town to catch the old highway to Ensenada, which is better then crossing entire Tijuana to the main road to Ensenada. Another tip... drive slow through Tecate. The cops there work for tips, if you know what I mean.:(

If you turn left be careful. Some locals said "sigueme". At the foot of the big hill take wiggle right. You end up near the interesection where you are heading to cross over north. You will see people going nto border just reverse the direction. Tio

I'm towing a trailer and crossing at Tecate Monday and going east on the Mex2. Does this construction effect the eastbound 2 ?

To supplement the map above, here are the written instructions which led to creation of the map.

TECATE CROSSING DURING ROAD WORKS

1.
After clearing customs, turn right at the next intersection on to “Revolucion”.

(There is a road works sign at this intersection blocking the usual way down the hill).

2.
Drive along Revolucion and turn left at the 6th intersection on to “Eufracio Santana”.

(The five streets you pass to get to this point are “Presidente Elias”, “Presidente Alvaro Obregon”, “Presidente Adolfo de la Huerta”, “Venunstian”, and “Aldrete”).

3.
Follow “Eufracio Santana” to the 9th intersection, which is a major 4 lane highway with a median called “Boulevard Defensores de Baja California”.

4.
Go straight across the intersection. “Eufracio Santana” now becomes “Av Nuevo Leon”.

5.
Follow “Av Nuevo Leon” for about 1km, during which it becomes a 4 lane highway with a median. (You will cross a railway track, and go under a pedestrian overpass before the 4 lane section). Watch out for a big bump at/near the first set of lights.

6.
When “Av Nuevo Leon” meets the next 4 lane highway, after about 1km, turn right. This is the Tecate-Ensenada Highway and you will be uphill from the bridge and McDonalds.

If you are heading east from Tecate you can now:
1.Turn left at the first light
2.Turn right at last street before steep uphill.
3. Go downhill past the hospital
4. Turn left at the light
You will be on the main road heading out of town towards Mexicali.

We crossed at Tecate on 7 Nov using the suggested west route from another post. That new route worked just fine. In fact, I may continue to use that route. There was one small hitch. When we made the left turn onto “Santana”, there was a large pile of dirt and some construction. Turned out not to be a problem and was easy to maneuver around in my extended van. I will be crossing the border next week, south bound. Has construction been completed, or is it still necessary to detour?

All the Major construction is now completed. No detours necessary.However, the Tecate tourism office has put a directional sign as you enter Tecate, that directs you to the traffic signal to Ensenada area.

Mex. 2 is in terrific shape. The Feds have done a magnificent job of expanding the road to the Guadalupe Valley, all the way to within 5 miles of the north end of the Valley. The last few curves are being straightened out by cutting a new road through the hills and building 3 new bridges. One small 2 KM dirt detour at the beginning of the curves heading West.
