Permanent vs Temporary visa costs

Hola Nomads, As usual, I'm confused. I've filled out all of the paperwork for beginning the process of getting a visa for myself and my wife so we don't have to hassle the FMM thing every time we cross the border. The email I received from the Consulate General in San Diego said we would have to pay $36.00 but I've read on other web sites that it's way more expensive (maybe he meant to say it was 36 bucks just to start the process). Also the email stated that I had to take care of the process at the consulate where I live, but there's not one in San Luis Obispo county and so far I can't get an answer on which one I should go to (Oxnard? - Fresno?). Also, what is the time frame for renewal (does it need to be done every year?), and is there an advantage on getting a permanent visa rather than a temporary (we can easily qualify for both as far as income, owning property, etc.). Penalty for exceeding the time on your Residente Temporal card: … $1,600

When changing from Residente Temporal to Residente Permanente, in 2014, INM charges an additional $1,036 pesos to process the change, on top of the base $3,953 pesos fee.

The 36.00USD is for the paperwork to process your visas (temporary or permanent). You still have to submit photos with your paperwork (Passport size). This has to be done at your closest Mexican Consulate office. If Fresno is your closest office, you'll just have to make the trip.
You will then each receive an FMM with a sticky back on it and you must stick this to your US passport. This you will show to the border INM office, who will in turn stamp it.

If permanent is you final action, then you have to submit a letter to the local immigration office where you will be applying for your residency. The letter has to state you permanent living quarters address, plus your desire for the RP card. Then you'll receive your paperwork from that office, then go to the nearest bank and pay the appropriate fees.
Do not forget to stop by at the border crossing and get a FMM that has the CANJE check mark on it. (you will have to show your passport with the FMM glued to it) This will not cost you anything. Then within 30 days you have to complete your paperwork at the local INM office of your residency.

If you do not visit your local INM office within the 30 days, all the above work is null and void and you have to start all over again...no excuses are valid!


A few weeks later the office will receive your cards. They'll contact you by e-mail. You will then have to pick up in person (the two of you) the cards. It has to be done in person because there are a few more papers you will have to sign.

Yes, it IS a big hassle, but this is one major headache you'll have out of the way.

Still think that getting a FMM is a hassle?
