The bustling mercado of San Cristobal de las Casas

Cañon Sumidero near Tuxtla Gutierrez

The plaza in San Cristobal

Ancient Ford in an ancient neighborhood.

There's a wide variety of produce, meats, herbs, flowers, and textiles in the Mercado Viejo de San Cristobal

Haggling over a gallina in the mercado.

San Cristobal skyline.

Former "free range" chickens.

In La Selva near Palenque

Only 5% of the ruins at Palenque are excavated. This is near the top of an un-excavated pyramid.

These are 1500 year old murals at the ruins of Banampak on the Rio Usumacinto which forms part of the border between Mexico and Guatemala.

awesome! those chickens sure look like they'd be generating some salmonella, especially during the summer!

Beautiful pics. San Cristobal de las Casas is a beautiful city, and Chiapas is a beautiful state.

Where are the murals from?

They are original, 1500 year old Mayan murals in the ruins of Bonampak. Some of very few remaining.

They kill them fresh right there and they sell out quickly. San Cristobal is 6000+ ft., it never got much over 70-75º when we were there and dipping down into the low 60's at night. We ate those chickens a lot because there was also a rotisseria about a 100 yards away cooking them on a spit over leña. They were absolutely delicious, and 100 pesos for a big one with all the fixuns'.

Thanks for the pics.

Chiapas and Guatemala are very special places....Mayan influence is still so evident in the indigenous .

25 years ago I spent several months in the area and found it to be a life-changing experience...

Chiapas -- So much to see and so different from Baja California. I have made several trips there. The heron on the snag looks like Cañon del Sumidero. Did you get get to the Maya ruins at Yaxchilán? It's an hour's boat ride down the river which forms the border with Guatemala.

San Cristóbal de las Casas can get very cold at night during the winter, close to freezing. I remember the clerk in our small hotel sitting with his parka and shivering in the early morning.

Thanks for the beautiful photos. They brought back a lot of memories.

Thanks so much for sharing! Took me right back to the plaza and the Mercado. I bought a pair of woolen socks that I love to wear in the winter.
