LA Bay Diesel fuel

roktaxi - 12-5-2015 at 08:55 AM

Preparing for my first trip back to Baja since / from the mid '60's to the late '70's. Heading to LA Bay with my '05 Jeep Liberty CRD (diesel). Don't need ULS fuel but have heard conflicting reports that it may not always be available there. (??)

The westernmost station carries it and will have it 90+% of the time. Sometimes they run out and it takes a few days to get a refill in. Fill up when you get to town, not when you want to leave.

I agree with bkbend, 90% of time they have it and only 2 times we waited 2 days for truck to arrive. We always fill up on arrival. Enjoy your trip.

All Baja Norte has ULS, just for anyone else who is concerned. Where did you get a diesel Jeep, in Canada?

Thanks for the update on fuel. Don't mind hanging out a few days if need be. I should be OK tho. I carry 2, 2 gal. ROTOPAX *cans* and average 350 (off-road) miles on my main tank before I start looking for a fuel stop.

Jeep origianally came from Denver. I'm the third owner. After 2006, all diesels in the US were made to run on ULS. Don't know about Canada.

It's a VM Motori made in Italy. Factory is owned by Chrysler / Fiat. The new 2016 Dodge has the same 2.8 (upgraded) motor. Mostly electronic upgrades with various critical (flawed) engine components. Been around for many years in EU and Asia. The sh*t hit the fan when they tried to make them reliable under CARB rules.

Thanks, I just don't recall ever seeing (or smelling/ hearing) a diesel Liberty before... Maybe they were not sold in California?

I had two freinds with the older Jeep Liberty diesels.Nightmare of problems, that dealer could not fix.Sad to say dealers had to buy them back.Would like to know about the Ops Jeep Diesel. How its fixed long term.Because it would make good off road vehicle

The diesel Liberty has quite a rap sheet. It's a love / hate thing. I'ts either a POS or a great thing. Basically, the engine has some inherent flaws. Most can be mitigated if you learn what they are and nip it at the bud.

Some issues revolve around engine lubrication and others relate to engine and transmission management. I was lucky in that I bought it with less than 20K on a NEW motor. Fixed all the potential issues and it runs GREAT! I was VERY lucky that I found one in exceptional condition.

I wouldn't bring it to Baja if I had any reservations about reliability now that it's "tuned up".
