VPN

weebray - 12-15-2015 at 05:37 PM

We have been using Strong VPN which does work well but they have increased their yearly fee and cut out phone service to tech. What are you using and how do you like it???? It's time for us to renew.

mrfatboy - 12-15-2015 at 05:49 PM

I use Torguard. $30/year with promo code. I used "TGLifetime50" as the promo code.

Tod - 12-16-2015 at 07:23 AM

Private Internet Access...PIA, been very happy with them. No problems. I think close to $38 per year.

karenintx - 5-31-2017 at 08:00 AM

We used Strong VPN for a couple of years until they changed their customer service and only allowing "one" device at a time.

My hubby...aka "my IT person" switched to Pure VPN. It allows up to five devices.

Been using Panda Pow for the last two years and no problem fooling Netflix.

john68 - 6-1-2017 at 05:55 AM

Panda Pow sounds interesting.

Do you use the Panda Pow VPN router or just the VPN?

Thanks.

8knots - 6-1-2017 at 06:26 AM

Just the VPN.

I am going to stick this in here just for your info.....
Many people dont know this but if you want to call someone who is a facebook friend of yours, there is a phone receiver icon on the private message window and if you click it you can call them like on a phone and the reception is way better than magic jack even in our area of crappy slow internet....oh yeah...and it's free!

Weebray mentions an annual fee? Is that VPN not the same as Facebook's?

VOIP is internet phone calling...

VPN cloaks your IP address so you can use Netflix and things like that outside of the country...

it is also for people with different names on baja nomad

David K - 6-24-2017 at 01:45 PM

So, is that a yes or no?
Thank you amigo.

Bob and Susan - 6-24-2017 at 03:10 PM

apples and oranges

David K - 6-24-2017 at 03:42 PM

Lengua - 6-26-2017 at 02:33 PM

I believe that VPN IPs are generally easy to identify with a reverse lookup. Same with automated machine registrations, and proxy IP addresses. One might be able to hide/cloak their actual info, but not the fact they are using such a service/system/etc. to conceal such.

What is the latest in regards to VPN.

Is this a "wireless" system or does it need a landline phone number.

I think I know a little about this.
Seems my camp is too close to the antennas on the volcano. The signal goes too far over us.
It causes "streaming" to "buffer" when downloading.

Does that make any sense.

bkbend - 5-21-2019 at 08:52 AM

I use windscribe vpn, it's a Canadian company so at least I have the illusion that US snoops will have a harder time digging into my illegal activity. :o I think it was around that $30/yr range on sale (frequently offered) and it includes a phone app version. They have a free version you can try. I don't know about phone tech support, but I did get a prompt reply to an email question. It also works on a satellite internet connection. When I was still working we had an in-house VPN to connect to work servers and it didn't like the latency with satellites.

David - you don't need a VPN to use Facebook Messenger's "phone" capability. Any 2 people with Facebook Messenger can communicate in this way.

You probably already know this, but a Virtual Private Network (VPN) enables a person to "tunnel in" to a different set of IP addresses. It's used primarily to enable remote users to access a corporate network (so that you appear to be "in the office") but can also enable users in one country to access networks in another (so that expats in Mexico can appear to be in the U.S.).

Hope this helps.

All of this is like another language to me. I have a headache just reading it!

Thank goodness for youngsters in this world.

Blanca, is VPN allows you to disguise your location when using the internet for various reasons.
It sets your IP...your current online address, to another loacation.

It provides anonymity or an access point to view sites that cannot be viewed in the country you are actually in.

Say you want to view a site that only allows Americans to view it and you are in China, well you use a VPN to set your Chinese IP to an American one.

It also protects your location and traceability.
I run a forum and a blog that interacts with a lot of people around the world and you can see where people are posting or reading from, right down to where their Service is pinging from, so I use a VPN when on them so others cannot trace where I am at.

Does that make sense?

Sounds like you can teach some of us old folks some things? It is so nice to have fresh blood on this forum! Would you care to share your blog or website links with us? As you can see, there is a signature feature on Nomad where you can put a couple of links to invite people to see your sites.
Thank you, Khaleesi.

It all seems rather sinister. Disguising your location? Sounds like something taught in KGB 101.

I have used Private Internet Access (PIA) for a couple of years now here in Socorro. I teach online for colleges in the States and asked my IT guys on the campuses what I should use and they all recommended this one. The only downside is one of my banks will not let me access my account while cloaked. Yeah they can figure it out based on the site traffic for each vpn server, just takes an algorithm to determine. I use it simply because I don't liked to have any of my internet use tracked easily, it all gets tracked, do the best I can to throw in a monkey wrench.

wiltonh - 5-22-2019 at 09:06 AM

The location we visit has very slow internet so watching something like Netflix has not worked well. I have not tried a VPN in several years but the last time I did it slowed the data down even more. My choice was to purchase a lifetime copy of PlayOn which now cost about $40. This allows me to download legal files from Netflix and most any other streaming site. They add my IP address and email address to every movie or TV show so if I uploaded them, everyone would know where it came from. I have several external drives filled with programs which I plan to watch during the winter. This solution only works if you spent your summers up North but it is probably a lot cheaper than paying a monthly fee for a VPN.

What are you afraid of and why? I'm sure the NSA can find out whatever they want no matter what you do. If Facebook and Google don't already know more about you than you even imagine. I think that horse left the barn a long time ago.

Not trying to be smart ass about it, just interested in why someone would try to hide from tracking, it seems so pervasive already. Seems privacy died a few years ago.

It avoids someone getting into your computer and then your bank account.

It lets you watch Youtube in China.

It lets you stream college football games in Mexico.

It hides your identity when watching weird porn genres, e.g pegging flicks.

I'm not sure, but I think all the benefits of a VPN described in this thread can also be achieved using a TOR browser. It provides the highest degree of anonymity when browsing the Inet and is used to browse the dark web.

It's free.

Streaming video might be a problem.
