Can we get some current road conditions for the next few days on HWY 1. We plan on leaving Punta Chivato Tuesday morning headed north to San Quintin for the night. Then off in the next morning for a border crossing. Thanks.

Supposed to be several storms headed in to Baja starting Sunday night/Monday morning....through at least Thursday, northern Baja/southern California

The local San Diego weather forecasters are all worked up for this week's 5 days of rain predicted. About 5 hours from now the first one hits us... followed by the next this afternoon, then a bigger one Tuesday afternoon... and more after that. Predictions for 4" along the coast this week!

Not going anywhere soon til this system blows through. But, would still like road reports, flooded vados, impassable areas and when they are again passable.

Heading South this week, thinking of doing the San Felipe route. Think the vados south of SF will be OK? How about the dirt section past Cocos's? Any info will help.

It seems to be winter storms coming down from the north, not tropical stuff from the south or Hawaii. That being the case, the mountains keep most of the rain on the Pacific side and is why the east side is a desert.

Having camped south of San Felipe for 50 years, my GUESS is you should be fine... But, it is "weather" and will do almost anything!

Those vados awash and flash floods happen more in late summer and fall.

You know Baja, Nick... and Baja always wins in the end!

Hwy5
From L Chapala heading north traffic was considerable. The word is out and Hwy 5 is being used by all kinds of vehicles including many big rigs. Some of the subcompact vehicles and RVs are creeping pretty slow in the area between the construction haul roads and Coco’s. However the all the dirt portion is getting better all the time due to all the use.
Hwy1
Heavy traffic with big rigs until past El Rosario. Very slow travel. Plenty of pot holes Before and after El Rosario. Watch the weather forecast.
If heading to Baja Sur Hwy 5 will save many hours of driving time even if driving very slow on the dirt section. And no potholes on the paved portion. Watch out for the Vados just south of San Felipe.
Better roads start at LA Bay intersection when going south.

we drove from BOLA to Asuncion yesterday in the heavy rain and there were no arroyos running yet but there were some major big puddles that caused some problems in the vados...one in particular just after a curve just north of Nueva Rosarito that was huge and you had to slam on the brakes and even then..lots of water splashing into your vehicle! Best to take it slow.

FYI as usual only a sprinkle in Asuncion...sunny and warm here today! I just got a call form a guest who is held up in Rosarito with heavy rain.

Road report from Zachary Johnston, Mex1 north from Vizcaino...

"Just did the drive from Bahia Asuncion to San Diego. The drive was not that bad but I can only imagine it's going downhill quickly. I've done a lot of driving in Baja in some big rain storms so I have some experience. First thing I noticed was a lot of huge pot holes forming north of the Bahia de Los Angels turn off to about Catavina. There was water forming on the edges of many arroyos but nothing too dangerous yet. El Rosario north was a mess with lots of mud and flooded streets but nothing too crazy considering we were driving a truck. There are a lot of rocks on the toll road out of Ensenada. Most of the sections are coned off but that doesn't mean you are safe so beware. We took Blvd 2000 which was flooded pretty badly in some spots with mud across the road, too. As you head west, the police had closed the road due to flooding and rerouted us north and then west where we got in line at the car wash. We spent 15 minutes in the regular lane.

All in all, a safe trip but definitely glad we did it today and went all the way. I would not want to be driving it if the rain continues...'"

I just wrote a post about the road conditions yesterday and today, January 4 and fifth. I'm spending the night in Ensenada instead of trying to drive to San Diego in the dark given the flooding and road conditions I've seen so far.

I've driven this highway for decades including during big El Nino years and today had some of the worst conditions I've seen. It didn't help that I was hit from behind while stopped at the only signal light in Colonet.

The car that hit me was totaled. I will write a full report in a separate post.

Crossed at tecate around noon yesterday. Hard rain all the way down the compadre trail to Ojos negros. Hwy 3 from Ojos to valle de trinidad not too bad. Flooded in a few spots. Starting to rain again this morning. Watch out for all the rocks on the road.

There was an article in Ensenada.net a few days ago stating the municipality just jot the traffic signal repaired and working again
