Loafing and teaching Santo Tomas area

After a two year delay, I'm about to take off again for Baja. I'm looking for a small, remote coastal area, something like the Bocanna-Puerto Santo Tomas area about 30 miles South of Ensenada.

I have no plans except to find a spot to park my small trailer and sit and read and do some writing for an indefinite period. I taught English conversation some 40 years ago in Japan. I'd love to teach English with a group of village kids, strictly for free, to be a helpful member of the community. I just wanted to cast about on this forum for thoughts, contacts, alternate locations.

There is more of a community at Ejido Erendira, not far from Santo Tomas. Lots of beautiful coastline too. To get to know the area you could at first set up home at the trailer park in Santo Tomas and then drive around, checking things out.

I am aware. Sorry. It's just my name. My heritage is Norwegian. Great, great grandparents came from Norge.

Danmark - we are really far south of Ensenada but we have so many wonderful projects that you might be interested in participating in....

a surf club
a bike club
a soccer club
an English conversation club (I made that up, but I do teach English and the kids LOVE having someone besides "teach" to practice with.
a scholarship program for disadvantaged brilliant students
and my biggest project: a clean up Baja club - at least once or twice a month we go out and pick up trash, either middle school or high school kids included.

La Bocana is pretty far south. Ok, it is REALLY far south. But it is a cool place to chill! I think it would be perfect for a writer. Have fun choosing your next spot to enjoy life.

we are a really small community with only about 9 ex pats who live here, 1600 really nice Mexicans, a great supermarket with Costco items.

Thanks Blanca! Sounds like a great community. I've made several trips to Bahia de Los Angeles, so I think I know the turnoff to the West before you get to San Ignacio. I'll look forward to a visit since I'll do some exploring. I've never gone swimming with the dolphins, so that's something I'm looking forward to if I can get these old bones moving.

My plans are indefinite. The bocana I referenced was of course much farther north, Bocana Santo de Tomas. The fishing village in that location, just 50 km S of Ensenada, may have few if any children or families. My understanding is the men fish there, but their families live inland.

OK. look forward to meeting you. I recommend you go to Bahia Asuncion first and come down the coast (about 1.5 hours). then you can surf in Abreojos (if you surf) and head south to San Ignacio and beaches further south.

Yes, there is a small fishing village but at the very end is the resort run by Sam Saenz. He would have many spots to park your trailer and simply look out over the Pacific...not many visitors this time of year so you would often have the place to yourself.

At the head of the valley leading down to the ocean is indeed a small community and school...right at the turn off... I would assume many of these people work in the fields leading down to the ocean.

With buying fresh fish from the local fishermen (plus all the mussels you could ever want to eat) , and hopefully produce from the valley, it could be quiet a tasty place to stay!

Wow! If you'd consider a bit further south, La Chorera is a small fishing community about 3 hours south of Ensenada, just west of San Quintin. We are a small community with a kindergarten/pre-school, elementary and a high school. I am currently the volunteer English teacher for the schools but I am really pressed for time taking care of our business ops down here and could really use the help if you are sincere. It's a beautiful community and we would gladly let you park your trailer within the safe confines of our fish camp/abalone farm, right on the water if you like.

Exactly! That is why I'm heading there. Not just for Sam's place, http://www.puertosantotomas.com/ , but because it seems like a great place to buy or rent property. Thanks to this forum I've met some great people, some via private messages. One mirrored my own thinking, that one can have complete solitude, yet be only an hour and a half from the conveniences of Ensenada. I keep going back to Mexico for many reasons. Chief among them are the people I've met, both Mexicans and ex pats.
