Hello!
I was wondering if anyone knew someone that rented out their home in Gonzaga Bay? We have done day trips down there and have stayed in the hotel but
this time we are looking to rent a home for about a week. I have checked AirBnB and sites like that but I have't had any luck. Any suggestions? Thanks

We have a had a house at Alfonsina's for about 40 years. We have never heard of one of them being rented. The reason is that these houses are not
"turn key" and they must be managed and cared for by somebody who knows what he is doing and cares about the place.
The systems....electricity, water, refrigeration, toilets....are always hand made by the owner and can't be easily repaired without a trip to the
hardware store in San Felipe or a lot farther north.
In addition to that some of those systems can be very dangerous to a person who is either ignorant of them or uncaring. For instance the solar system
batteries that provide power to the house during the night are dangerous lead acid types and they need weekly watering. Also pumps for fresh water
and for moving salt water to roof tanks for the toilets need to be carefully managed to prevent them burning up or from wrecking the inverters that
supply power them and the house.
It is also possible to overuse the electrical storage in the batteries and to thereby wreck them.....a set of them can easily cost $2000 and can
require a long trip to San Diego to buy replacements and then to install them....that is a lot of work...the normal such battery weighs at least 100
pounds and our system, as an example, has 8 of them. Etc.
Some of us have had friends use our houses and dune buggies etc. who then left them broken....either on purpose or because they were just dumb.
So your best chance to stay in one of these places is to become a friend of an owner and then to get to know how to run/manage the place. Some of us
are absent from there for a month or two and thus might be interested in a trusted and capable person to stay in the place...free.
But that does not include us....we have been burned too many times.....you need to check around....and that requires being there for a few days at the
least.
Best of luck. We love the place and we love it when people share that love but doing so is a lot different from renting a house on the beach in La
Jolla.
