Trip Report..my first..

Terry28 - 3-2-2016 at 07:34 PM

Ok guys here is my first attempt on a report...Left Rosarito on Feb. 15..heading south..Party of 8..6 adults and 2 kids, 5 and 9...Over night in Catavina ( at the Mision) very nice..around $50 per room...next day to Guerro Negro, stayed at the Posada Don Vinente... Pass on this hotel if you can.
Met up with Shari Bondy the next day for a whale experience...and can't really explain how cool it was...Her knowledge, personality and presentation made the trip what it was...I don't pimp for many folks but this chick has her act together..you are really missing something if you don't get on her boat.
Next day to Bay of LA..one night at the Del Sol and he other at the Vientos hotel next to the military base...New owners are really cleaning it up, very nice and beach front..$70 a night..worth it but food is high dollar...All check points were painless, waived through them all. Very little traffic south of San Quinteen....I know spelling is off..bfd....Main point..go see the whales...Go with Shari....have fun....

Nice start but now you have to learn how to post pictures. Hosting site like photo bucket or flikr is easiest way. Thanks for taking the time to post. Like to see the hotel prices.

Yes, but 50/night at the Mision Catavina? Really think that the poster misremembered that one.
Si on Shari!

Thanks Terry. Heading south next week to follow in your footsteps. Can't wait for Gavi's in April.

Terry, that was an excellent report! great info.

next time, stay at the TERRA SAL in g negro - it is very clean and reasonable. Brand brand new.

Terry28 - 3-3-2016 at 02:29 PM

Rhinetransit...It really was that price..and the hotel was full, we had reserved 3 rooms....One more thing, the airstrip at the Bay of LA was open, when did that happen?? ....

Curious that the hotel in Catavina gave you such great rates. They are often sold out during whale season, and the old owners used to charge close to $100USd for a room.

I know that the Los Pinos folks upgraded the hotel including keeping the electricity on all day.

But if one goes on travel websites such as Expedia, the price is still near $100 per night.

expedia (and every other booking site) typically adds 30% to every night they facilitate.

Yep. Go with Shari...

What's curious to me is that Terry takes a chance posting his first trip report and his Nomad brethren challenge him on what he posted. He even replied that what he posted was correct and someone still feels the need to challenge him. WTF?

I take dozens of Baja trips via motorcycle, 4x4, car and boat every year, I don't bother posting trip reports any more....just sayin....

Thanks Terry- agree: Shari does great whale trips.

Also agree with Shari: stay at TerraSal. New, clean, modern.

Finally- Congrats on a great deal at Cataviņa. Maybe you earned the group discount with your 3 rooms.

Same person asked me why another Nomad doesn't post here anymore... People who share shouldn't be harassed. The "why bother" attitude will spread and that is a real loss for so many who really enjoy reading trip reports or seeing trip photos.

Woder why he didn't work some political BS about Trump/ Hillary into that report? Just kidding Terry; keep up the good work and welcome to BN.

BajaBlanca - 3-4-2016 at 09:56 AM

oh David, your posts are important! even when harassed, we must prevail!

This site is very helpful and I think that the offroad trips are really important to post. Our experiences are really important to post as each and every one has a different take.

Everyone might take heed though, if we aren't more careful, more of us will give up. Boring life then, amigos. It would be nice if everyone could agree to be civil. always. respectful. always.

Terry, fotos or it didn't happen!

Last time I stayed there before the Los Pinos folks bought it, I had a reservation made by phone and the rate was $90 usd.

So that it why I asked the question. $50 bucks a night during whale season. The place always filled up during those times at $90 dollars a night. I can attest to that. Been there.

Same reason here...since the new owners, I've never paid under 85-90/night and I stop there almost every trip up or down, high season or low. They will not give a resident nor INAPAM discount, either.

Would love to hear I could get a lower rate, that's why I questioned 50/ night.

And as I said, great to hear the trip report! Welcome, and many happy returns.
