Mexico City is not a distrito federal any more

I heard on TV and read in a blog that Mexico City is now known only as CDMX or Ciudad de Mexico. It is not a distrito federal (federal distict) any more.

I've often heard Mexico City referred to as simply "Mexico" by Mexicans. Maybe it's something like people in NorCal calling SFO "the city." Or NYC the "Big apple."

Every great city earns it's own special name.

Another common name for DF has been simply, La Ciudad.

I'm sure that TJ residents prefer the nickname "Gateway to Mexico" but for older ex-sailors it will always be "Birth Place of the original dog and pony show". Also for foodies it is known as the "Birth Place of the Cesar salad"

I wonder how many folks enjoyed a Caesar Salad at the restaurant in the Caesar hotel, which was never owned by Italian Caesar Cardini. He is buried in the Inglewood Memorial Park in LA county, where he spent much of his life.
