Fundamentally the differences between Mezcal and Tequila are that Tequila can only be made from a single strain of the agave, and can only be made in the state of Jalisco. Other than that, they are quite similar.

Not true. If the bottle does not say 100% agave (as many do) it can be blended with caņa or other lesser agaves. The states of Michoacan,Nayarit,Guanajuato,Tamaulipas and of course Jalisco are all under the appellation of origin for Tequila.
