Storm coming through Owens Valley

The Sierras received more snow early this week which is a good thing! And we had this amazing cloud in the valley. I know little about clouds, but I have been told it was a spread out lenticular cloud?? I just know it was a gorgeous thing to see.

THANKS Woody and Harald! I was glad I had my camera with us that day. We had just driven into Bishop to grocery shop, and when we came out ---- wow :biggrin:

Yes, yes, yes, it had to be ET. Around here we have CARMA and more set-ups looking for the edge of the universe and more, and we are not that far from Area 51. LOVE IT, thank you. :saint:

This one was taken right behind Von's in Bishop where we were grocery shopping. After taking a few in that location, we took off and tried other locations off of some dirt roads, but we ended up liking this one best. :saint:

On edit --- it is fun chasing a cloud as it changes so quickly.

Reading another one of your posts and it just dawned on me that we should meet. We have Mammoth and Baja in common. Our primary home is San Diego, but we spend a lot of time in our other two homes, Mammoth and Rosarito.
Where are you in Baja? And where in the states?

Hi Lori,
We sold our home in Bahia Asuncion and our primary place in Imperial Beach, so now we are simply travelers again with only one home base in Big Pine for the last 3 years. We originally thought about Mammoth, but too old for too much snow. We intended to move to Bishop, but found a place in the old part of Big Pine that we liked.

If you would like to meet sometime for lunch here or maybe in Bishop on your way to or from Mammoth, just u2u me. It would be a good thing. :-)

Diana, I rode thru Lone Pine northbound on my old Harley back in '99 and was captivated with all the history on 395, albeit almost croaking from the heat in July. Loved Convict lake, having put a link to the old Glenn Ford movie. You are really blessed to live in such a neat place. I wonder how much that area has changed since then.

When I worked at China Lake/ Ridgecrest for 10 + years our local ski club had a lodge at Mammoth that slept 24 people. Used to drive my kids up every other weekend for sking during the season. At that tme ('63-'74) I knew every curve, hill and dip on 395.

Keith, July is usually HOT in the valley, but we can escape it by just driving up the hill. :-) And it cools off at night, unlike when we lived in the Central Valley and Calexico!

Convict Lake is great! Except they have a very overpriced restaurant!

You would probably be surprised how little it has changed around these parts. Yes, there has been change, but not a lot of growth because most of the land is owned either by The Los Angeles Department of Water and Power or the BLM or is a part of a one of the National Forests.

And if you like the old movies, next time you are through Lone Pine, don't miss the Movie Museum. It wasn't there in 99, and it is really worth seeing because so many films have been made in the Alabama Hills by Lone Pine --- old and new.

On edit --- you are not off Compass. We are about an hour north of Lone Pine, 13 miles south of Bishop and you had to go through here to get to Convict Lake! Most people just are annoyed by the 35 mile zone through our small town and don't even notice that it exists.

My first trip to the Sierras was in 1964, but it was a summer trip. If one drives 395 around here now, do set your cruise control especially starting at Lone Pine. In the 13 miles from here to Bishop, we often see as many as 3 or 4 highway patrol and or sheriffs and police. And often, they have someone pulled over.

We used to think the 35 zone through Big Pine was a pain in the neck, but now that we cross that highway in the only crosswalk around here to get our mail, we, as are the other locals, smile when another speeder is stopped! Oh, it is 25 in the school zone, and they are serious.

Another favorite place for the highway patrol is at the bottom of the Sherwin Grade.

Yup, Diana, it is def a neat place. I camped out in lone pine in my tent and wandered around the back acres amongst the amazing rock formations. John Wayne is one of my growed up as a hero guys, and I think he shot some dusters there as well. Dont know if I'll ever pass that way again but I'm def glad I did. Remember riding to the base of Mount Shasta as well but didn't go any further.
It's neat that in the midst of all the negative changes Cali has gone through, this remains so untouched. I know....I grew up in the southbay of the 60s. If you can take that heat, you can live anywhere....Ridgecrest was right around 120 when I rode in.
