TJ to La Paz

Just made the TJ to La Paz trip.

Left TJ about 10:45 AM and arrived in Mulege about 10PM and stayed at the hotel just inside the main entrance. $500 pesos for the night and room was clean with working AC and TV. We usually carry stuff in t he back of the pickup and never had any issues with theft at the hotel.

It rained from TJ to past San Quintin and made for slow passing. The roads were usual and nothing to note....

South side of Catavina was missing asphalt as usual and with good sized pot holes. This stretch can really eat up your tires if not careful .

Very short side detour near La Paz.

Gracias a Dios for a safe trip and enjoying La Paz.

Right now, low 80s with slight breeze and sunny :)

Yesterday, went to Pichligue for Chocolatas and few beers - Tradition to always go on the first day.

Looking forward to some beers with fellow nomads.

5 pm to 10 pm is a lot of nighttime driving. Glad you arrived in Mulegé safe! Thanks for the road report!!

I think we lose the journey for the destination......

I know what everyone is going to say, but typically, we do the TJ to La Paz drive in one shot. Leave TJ around 5:30AM and arrive in La Paz around 11PM.

This is how we do it: The Wife packs breakfast, lunch and dinner and feeds me while I drive. We stop for gas in Rosarito South, Rosario, Vizcaino, Loreto or C. Consitution and Voila in La Paz.

The key to driving at night is an unloaded semi. Keep them in from of you and follow along....

We have been planning a journey to la paz instead of let's get to la paz. One of these days, to stop and spend some time in the little places to explore.

This fall, I hope to make the trip to la paz on my road bike and will split it over 3 days and take some time.

And, I am going to work on some photos! :)

How long will you be in La Paz? We shall be there the first week in May for a couple days...and I think we should meet up on the malecon just like last time:

Amazing to me how many folks drive that very dangerous highway after dark. For hours after dark. Just doesn't seem worth it to me. Is it some sort a macho thing?

Just saying that there are some very fine low cost hotels along the way, so we always pull over and check in at dusk.

Thanks for the trip report Genecag, hope you have a good time in La Paz. I drive after dark too, just need to slow down and take your time...and follow a semi....looking forward to the photos..:bounce:

Edit to say that I don't recommend that everybody drive at night, We live here and get used to the limitations after a while. We do avoid driving on the highway at night when we can.

It's light until 730+ in Baja sur, just a minor correction for you, senor David

Not in the winter, or if the times are Pacific after crossing into Sur, 7:30 is 8:30 in Sur, which is what I was considering. But thank you Goat for your minor correction all the same.
