The same area 5-10 mi so. or n. of G. Negro, a cop with radar gun(good one) and the Fed stop 10 mi n. of LOreto. Could be temp new ones anywhere.

There is one a couple miles NORTH of the pemex in SAN IGNACIO. I have got a couple of rides from there ..... all the way to TIJUANA. ... once in an 18 wheeler and once in an SUV.
The guys in the military that work there are always in need of batteries for their flashlights.

The one northof Loreto is at MP 25 m/l They don't always stop you going south. But surely will, going north!! And I've never been item by item
searched in the 13 years I've been coming & going to Loreto. Always been in a pickup w/canopy, and usually 'loaded' with stuff.

Last year northbound at the San Ignacio checkpoint they wanted to sell me flashlight batteries, then at the checkpoint north of GN they wanted me to
make a gift of my flashlight. No to both!

Just went through the one north of Loreto yesterday and no problem. They were more interested in my Mexican mutts(puro mexicano) than the tons of
books in the camper. The smallest one climbed up into the camper and poked around but me and the mutts never left the cab.
"Que le vaya bien" and we were on our way.

I agree with Jesse... I have enjoyed most of them because they remind you that "you're not in Kansas anymore" (or any U.S. state)!
They are part of the Mexican experience... Latin American army (kids with big guns in the middle of nowhere), like in the movies...
The only ones I consider 'bummers' are the ones near Maneadero and north of San Felipe (when northbound), as the wait can be very long. The others are
fine, and a chance to practice Spanish, exchange culture, and make friends (international relations). Sharing a cold soda, water, candy, adult
magazine, or cheap flashlight all will go a long ways to make sure the word 'ugly' is never used with 'American' by these future Mexican business
owners or future government officials!
The only reason for fearing these soldiers or trying to avoid them would be if you are transporting ILLEGAL items (pot, drugs, guns, ammo)...

I agree; who cares where they are unless you are doing something illegal ?
In all our years going to La Paz and south, we have never been hassled or had more than a quick look into the camper. They have always been friendly
with our kids and curious about our dogs.
Our last time out to Punta Chivato we picked up a hitch-hiking soldier in full gear (no gun) heading out to report for duty at the airport. He was
just a kid; he'd never talked to a gringo before. They are more afraid of us than we need to be of them.
We occasionally pick up some spanish magazines, books or post cards and pens but never give them out until they say "ok to go".
Just make sure to lock your vehicle if you have to get out to open the trunk or camper. No need to let temptation lead to anything else.

The reason I would want to know is for night driving. Checkpoints are very different after the sun goes down, and I'd rather not go through one.

come on I have gone through them at night was no differant then during the day, less traffic. Like someone said if you got nothing to hide then you
have nothing to worry about, period.
A little story one time we pulled up to a checkpoint and as i opened the trunck from inside my car I remembered that I had all my cash in the trunk
under a towell we had been swimming earlier and I put it there because I was wet and forgot about it, about $500 US as I remembered the cash was in
the trunk they were starting to go through my stuff. I jumped out and ran to the back real fast. A few of them freeked for a second until I showed
them the $ then they all laughed at me. but for a moment it got a little tense. anyway ,They are just doing there Job and sometimes they are out in

I always have extra flash lights, Batteries of all kinds, A few case's of bottled water. I offer them any and all the above. As posted above if you
have nothing to hide NO Worry. Plus you can have some good conversation to break up the long drive. We have even delivered mail for a few. One time

If you wear (or have in the vehicle) a military camo jacket - you will always get conversation about your time in the service (if any).
