Comondú new road built Mulege; You would no longer need to go through Loreto
2 mayo, 2016

The project started, and although the Delegate of the SCT gave no end date, said that for this year, with 100 million pesos budget
La Paz, Baja California Sur (BCS). The delegate of the Secretariat of Communications and Transportation(SCT) in Baja California Sur, Eleazar Gutierrez Magana, confirmed the construction of a macrolibramiento that take you from La Purisima to San Ignacio , through San Juanico , which will prevent vehicles being diverted to Loreto .
"We are you working on shortening is La Purisima - San Ignacio , and now we have budget for this year, finishing 2 flights more, and we are including bridges in the stream of Santo Domingo and 2 road sections, we still [...] would be like one macrolibramiento, we go along the stream of Santo Domingo , we reach outto San Juanico , and then go to San Ignacio. "
Gutierrez Magana said the project is now complete, from the executive to its environmental impact; for now, said no end date, but this year, they have 100 million pesos budget.
"Everything, the executive project, registration with Hacienda, their respective environmental impact, since they are exempt from that is a road in operation [...] We are expanding and modernizing, right now we have 100 million pesos, go slowly with few resources are liberating ".
In other projects, the Delegate of the SCT briefly named the 3 projects that are scheduled for La Paz , one of them towards the exit from the airport south of the city.
"We are working on 3 warrants in La Paz, which is the beltway East, intercity and north, and one is the one that communicates Ciudad Constitucion, plans and other airport."

We've all been watching the black death creep southwest of San Ignacio - it's only a matter of time until it all connects.

motoged - 5-4-2016 at 02:28 PM

Geezuz....just grade it once in a while....and fill in the silt beds

TMW - 5-4-2016 at 03:35 PM

They have been working on the road out of San Ignacio to the Laguna for over 30 years and they have paved only 30 miles. There is about 100 miles yet to pave to La Purisima and I don't think 100 million pesos will cover it, that's only about 6 million dollars.

If they don't work any faster than what they did on Hwy 5 it'll take about 16 years to complete.

Baja keeps getting smaller.:(:(:(

I wish it were true, there are many towns that now have roads to them that did not 20 years ago. Udo, you have a house that my first drive out took 4 hours to get to. It's great for the locals and they live better because it. It just makes getting there less of an adventure. Baja is getting smaller.

At least not in my lifetime!

Ged, what should they fill the silt beds with? More silt?

Bajahowodd - 5-4-2016 at 04:56 PM

I (mistakenly) thought the highway to La Purisma was going to begin in San Ignacio and go South on the West Coast. This road makes little sense for folks traveling to La Paz and beyond because if you have already passed Conception, you may as well keep on going to and past Loreto.

David K - 5-4-2016 at 06:23 PM

The way that translation reads... La Purisima north to San Ignacio.
However, the road is already paved to San Juanico via Las Barrancas (which bypasses La Purisima). The road south from San Ignacio is also paved a ways (30 miles?) at TW mentioned.

Anyway, this paved route down the west side of the mountains was envisioned as far back as 1973... and that would cut over 100 miles off the run to la Paz and eliminate two steep mountain grades.

4x4abc - 5-4-2016 at 07:02 PM

saving 100 miles
OK

but
no view of Tres Virgines
no bakery stop (Santa Rosalia)
no lunch at El Patron (Mulege)
no beer stop and a dip in the water (Requeson)
no overnight at hotel Oasis (Loreto)
did I mention the heavenly breakfast there?
no view of Sierra la Giganta
no lunch at Vista al Mar (no sat, no map, no nada)
no tienda Ligüi (best cigar prices in Baja - Hoja de Mexicali)

give that up for a trip through desert hell?
maybe the truckies like it

AKgringo - 5-4-2016 at 07:35 PM

This road is not being considered for tourist traffic. I for one, would love to see a whole lot of truck and bus traffic diverted away from the current highway one along the East side!

David K - 5-4-2016 at 07:37 PM

Exactly!

PaulW - 5-5-2016 at 05:56 AM

True and the old road thru Santa Rosalia will become a nice tourist side trip for southbound travelers. And the west route will have local businesses flourish. And we loose that great dirt section However the beach route thru Datil survives.

The new road from san Ignacio to the lagoon was built narrow, and built on minimally prepped sub grade,.... Where is the modern "wide" highway that can handle truck weights? I like the parts of hwy 1 where they have improved it with wider lanes and wider shoulders.

The road attempts across the salt flats have been pathetic,... Are they going to spend real money to build a causeway and provide adequate drainage?

The new road currently requires driving thru san Ignacio square and narrow residential streets,... Does the town really want a parade of heavy trucks on their sleepy streets? Someone needs to build a bypass.

Ateo - 5-5-2016 at 07:57 AM

Can you imagine leaving San Ignacio for Scorp Bay and making it there in 1.5 hours? Landowners in San Juanico are gonna make some serious cash as property values rise.

AKgringo - 5-5-2016 at 08:18 AM

Less than halfway from San Ignacio to the Laguna, there is a road heading south near El Alamo (AAA map). I drove that road two years ago, and there were survey crews working on it then, It also appeared that there were some places being set up as possible batch plant/construction sites.

That would bypass the salt flats, and the dirt they piled up and paved over on the grade down to the flats. I predict a short life for that pavement!

I did not find the thread, but I remember reading on this forum that there is a bypass planned west of San Ignacio to handle the traffic.

I worked so hard on my XR650R on that section of the planet that I still remember it with trepidation.

mtgoat666 - 5-5-2016 at 09:21 AM

With sea level rising and predicted to keep rising, makes more sense to pave the inland route, instead of paving the salt flat route

Woody,
Fill the silt beds? Great idea, but I will let the nomad road engineers chime in with suggestions....

Ken,
The silt was my nemesis on my 690 ....surgery a week later ....

chuckie - 5-5-2016 at 11:28 AM

I thought they were already filled with XR650R's?

Sweetwater - 5-5-2016 at 11:34 AM

LOL, this one did it's best to fill in a section of silt. When he went down at 45mph, it looked like a mini-mushroom cloud bombe.

dtbushpilot - 5-5-2016 at 11:44 AM

I knew we would see that X-ray again when silt was mentioned. The most impressive part of the story was how, after a hail of ridicule from your riding buddy you pushed the bone back in, tightened up your boot and rode for 4 more days......no need to thank me for my part in making you an internet Baja Moto legend, I was happy to help..:bounce:

motoged - 5-5-2016 at 11:58 AM

David,
You know that I was thinking of you when I omitted the pic of my ankle with the staples and blood

Yes, my ride partner was so supportive with my trauma....his consideration was at its peak when he told me to "just pick up your skirt and ride"....and while I was limping around Rice and Beans in San Ignacio for a day, he pointed out that, rather than wait for my ride back to Canada and be a prisoner of Ricardo's parking lot, we should continue to Bahia Asuncion as planned and enjoy Juan and Shari's hospitality....which worked for me...(Tramadol may or may not affect one's rational thinking).

I believe the new route, if it ever happens, is to leave Mex 1 somewhere near the military checkpoint just north of San Ignacio, so as to bypass the town plaza, etc.

BajaBlanca - 5-5-2016 at 04:44 PM

wow, had no idea about the new route -it would be wonderful to see trucks taking that route, leaving the scenic road for tourists.

motoged - I remember reading about your fall way back when....it looks very painful in that photo.

Great point about heavy trucks rolling through town. Should never happen.

Big impact on those small communities. Hope they stay high and dry as well.

Finally, the palm tree is in the water!!

Does no one else see the error in the map????

bryanmckenzie - 5-21-2016 at 12:04 PM

Does no one else see the error in the map???? :?:

The last time I checked / drove, I seem to recall that Highway 1 went from Mulege to Loreto to Ciudad Insurgentes --- not to La Purisima.

HUH?? This info is being released from the highway department?

David, I am shocked that you did not catch this error. ;D Nomads seem to be be sleeping "at the wheel." :o

Hi Bryan... I did see it and have seen it before... It matters not because those on-line maps are pretty weak in accuracy and I expect Nomads to know where Hwy. 1 is and that there aren't two Hwy. 1s in parallel, even a hundred miles apart.

Good to see you here again. How are you doing on the East Coast (if you are still there)?

bryanmckenzie - 5-21-2016 at 01:01 PM

Hey David! I've popped in and out of here over the past 2 years. I've simply chosen to remain quiet and on-the-sidelines ... some heavy "life moments" during the past 2-3 years.

I've not had to see my dentist in Rosarito Beach since Nov. 2013. And used a few $$ to travel to Europe in 2015 and South America in January 2016.

Generally, I'm doing well. Still feeling out of place. Yes, still on East Coast. For now. Contemplating moving since mom died. Baja, Palm Springs and SoCal are always near & dear to my heart. Ditto for Vancouver, BC (the "other" BC).

So if I am granted a choice ... who knows what is next? What career is next? Yes, I need to work a few more years.

I'm going to need a 4x4. My 2002 Jetta has been so faithful, but with all the Baja off-road abuse I did to it, I feel she's getting tired. She? Maybe it's a he? :?: I'm thinking a Quigley --- live in, travel in. Lordy, what I could do in Mexico with one of these ...

CHEERS!

:saint:

Yes, a Quigley 4WD van could be a perfect Baja home on wheels! See posts by geoffff here.

Great you have been able to travel so much! I did notice your Russian/ East Europe sign post.

TMW - 5-21-2016 at 01:33 PM

FYI the section on the map labeled 211KM was used by SCORE in the 2010 Baja 1000 race. It comes in the backside of Rancho La Cuarenta.
