San Felipe to Mag Bay and return

El Comadante Loco - 5-22-2016 at 04:12 PM

My buddy Fred and I decided to take our KLR 650s on a baja ride. We had ridden to Cabo about 3 yrs ago Honda XL 650s so now it was time to see
how the KLRs would do with two old guys riding them and my cousin Robert with our gear and stuff as chase
This will be a brief summary of the trip

May 9.
Crossed Calexco east of course we were stopped and registration checked for bikes. On the KLR the SN is difficult to read without turning the handle bars fully to the right side since they were on the trailer and fully tied down so there was no way to do it. The agent said no problem and handed us our papers back. OK we are free to go NOT!!!! At that precise moment Mexican immigration shows up very courteous and professional requesting to see our tourist card which was presented to him. Now we were free to go. We spent the night at my house at campo San Antonio k43 Rd to puertecitos.

We ride San Felipe to Vizcaino. Poor riding conditions. Have to fight strong cross winds all the way. No problems with military check points. Stayed at motel across from the pemex as you enter. Think the name is Olivia. Cost 500 pesos

May11

Vizcaino to San Ignacio via Asuncion, la Bocano, Abrejojs then San Ignacio
Wind again. Road down from Asuncion had terrible washboard sections. Could not get KLR to even out the washboards without exceeding 50mhp. Decided to play it safe kept it at about 35. Arrived San Ignacio dead tired.
Stayed at la Huerta cost 600 pesos great place reasonable rates and free coffee

San Ignacio to loreto. Still strong wind from the West had to fight it all the way. Stayed at Desert Inn cost 950 pesos. Some issues with hotel clerk did not want t give me triple room said no hay. I insisted telling him I knew they had triples as I have stayed there in the past. We got the room but AC was off. The circuit breaker was off. Maintenance guy flipped it on and AC is on. There was no hot water and the TV had only rabbit ears. At check out the next morning the official fom office of tourism was there and asked about our stay so I uploaded on him. He did explain that the hotel had been directed by them not to rent a block of rooms including ours due to electrical and water issues. Told him I could understand that if the clerk would have told me instead of saying no hay. He agreed.

Loreto to Mag Bay. We wonder will the wind ever stop, again had to fight it all the way. Stayed Brenner's or something like that. Nice hotel, rooms nicely done plenty of hot water and cable TV, not that we watch it. Cost 600 pesos

Stay tuned for the return trip report

The Desert Inn in Loreto always has a problem of one kind or another. I would not be surprised to see it closed in a few years.
