Ice in Gonzaga Bay

redhilltown - 5-29-2016 at 09:34 AM

I realize there is no "certainty" in Baja, but is ice at Gonzaga Bay now pretty much a full time thing at Rancho Grande? I am assuming it is but when I assume, I can't help think of the Odd Couple episode! Any info appreciated.

They have had it every time I've stopped by. I assume they make it themselves since it's not in a regular commercial ice bag.

Good to know...many thanks!

We got ice at Rancho Grande store on our last trip, but it was commercial bag ice cubes and not local made blocks. That was last summer (July 2015)... It is Baja, so never "expect" things to be the same or as reported! Just enjoy or adapt to what you find on your trip!

But, always have a great trip!!!

My last time through there during the huge Easter week Rancho Grande ran out of drinking water to the dismay of a group of adventure motorcyclists from the Bay area. They showed up extremely thirsty in BOLA. I don't remember getting ice as we had stocked up in San Felipe. I think that is a rare occasion to not find ice.

There was an ice truck replenishing them 2 weeks ago. I am assuming they get regular deliveries from San Felipe now.

Geez, I thought Gonzaga was WAY too far south to have ice in it, EVUR.... 'cept for maybe the Pleistocene, and then only on occasion... :?:

OK, now I understand. The ice is in the store; not in the bay

Epilogue: The were indeed, out of ice at Rancho Grande! They do make it there and the filtration system broke...would have some the next day trucked in from San Felipe. We were going to go out fishing for grouper and just wanted to make sure we had a way to keep it nice and cold in case we got into any keepers (which we did but nothing earth shattering.) I had stuffed my 150 qt Coleman cooler full of blocks of ice and cubes before leaving just in case...can never ever have enough ice when camping and fishing in 100' + weather!
