Anyone see my Mama on TV?

Howard - 5-30-2016 at 07:50 PM

Channel 10 news in San Diego just ran a segment on my mother who just turned 100 years old. She knits red, white and blue comfort blankets for disabled veterans.

Anyone catch it?

BornFisher - 5-30-2016 at 08:50 PM

Didn`t catch it but a HUGE CONGRATS to your mother.
Is there a chance there will be a video link from channel 10?

didn't see it in the High Desert either

I also offer congratulations for what she does - at 100!

You've gotta be so proud.

A big Yankee Doodle for your Mom. She's an inspiration.

Mom's are the best!

Good for her, both for turning 100 and the knitting.

Howard, here is their website: http://www.10news.com/news/
I tried searching "100 year old" with no luck, maybe you can try using her name?

Howard - 5-31-2016 at 09:17 AM

I called the news station and asked how I find it on line and they said only 20% of the stories make it on line. I guess my moms didn't make it.

Thanks for al your kind replies.

That is very wonderful!

StuckSucks - 5-31-2016 at 04:37 PM

Has your mother seen the segment? If so, what was her reaction to seeing herself on TV?

Bajahowodd - 5-31-2016 at 04:59 PM

From what I could find, her story is not online. But holy crap to my namesake and his wonderful mom! So uplifting.

Yes, she saw it and remarked "I look so old!" I assured her that TV makes you look 10 years older and she sort of was OK with that.

Actually she crochets, not knits these patriotic blankets. She has completed around 30-40 of these lap blankets and goes down to the various hospital locations at Camp Pendleton and gives them away. I will try and post a picture of her and the blankets.

If anyone wants the story on why she does this, just let me know and I'll spill the beans on the heart warming reasons why it's for the disabled veterans.

yes, we all want to know!

CaboMagic - 5-31-2016 at 07:12 PM

Yes definitely Howard, please do share/spill!:bounce:

How awesome.. please give her a big hug from me :D LG

Please keep in mind I want to keep this story about my mother, not me.

My mother has a special place in her heart for disabled veterans because I was wounded in Vietnam and was sent back to Camp Pendleton Naval Hospital to have my wounds closed and physical rehabilitation. Her memory is starting to fail due to age but she can remember like it was yesterday when she received the call in the middle of the night from me, all the way from the Subic Bay Naval Hospital in the Philippines to tell her that all would be OK. She tells the story that her and my dad cried all night after hearing that news even though I assured them "it was just a scratch."

Sylvia has a hard time remembering what she did yesterday but can vividly remember the moment I was brought off the plane on a stretcher and they saw me for the first time since being deployed almost one year to the day from them seeing my plane off from El Toro air base.

She tells the story that no one has any idea what it is like to be a mother and have their child go to war and especially a war that made no sense.

I could go on and on about her, but most of us all have good things to say about our moms and I am just one of the lucky ones to still have her around.

There is her story of why she does what she does!

Howard - 5-31-2016 at 08:23 PM

Nope, she is living in Oceanside.

CaboMagic - 6-1-2016 at 06:56 AM

thank you Howard, for sharing, and for your service.

It's good that she continues to heal her hurt by doing this -- so many benefit by this, and I think there is much receiving when one gives.

Please tell Sylvia, that I've (Lori) asked you to tell her I LOVE HER even though we've never met, and that I've also asked you to give her a really big, long-holding hug for me .. perhaps one day I can do this in person, but until then, every time you see her, please give her an extra hug and tell her its from me. She may or may not 'get it' or 'remember it' but I think everyone is enriched with good hugs.

God Bless All, LG

Why in the world did you have to try and ruin this wonderful thread about a wonderful woman by bringing up a turd like Bill O'Reilly?:?:

bacquito - 6-2-2016 at 10:23 PM

Howard, thanks for your service and you have a great mom that loves you a lot.

Nowhere near level headed and quite a bully. But I guess that Fox News is playing in your home 24/7.

Didja know that Sean Hannity dropped out of my Alma Mater? He decided that rather than furthering his education, he could invest in snake oil.
