New launch ramp at Serenidad

gallesram - 6-27-2016 at 03:49 PM

I have it on good authority that the government is building a new launch ramp at the Serenidad. It will have 2 docks and should take around 3 months to complete. Has anyone seen the progress? Can you post pictures? Also would like to know if they're going to dredge any of the river out to the lighthouse as part of the project. Thanks everyone!

the ramp is well underway--the river will be dredged when the chickens come home

Is Don still with us?

Oh, sad news!
Erle Stanley Gardner included her photo a few times I think in his 1967 book, Off the Beaten Track in Baja.

Sad news. We just met her in La Paz about a year or so ago.

It would be nice to have the new ramp during the winter season when there are now more tourist. I'm thinking that making a new ramp at the start ot hurricane season isn't the brightest idea.

In Mexico, you build things when cronyism delivers the money.

That's not that different than in the US, really. The major difference I see is that when Dems or Repubs get some pork through to private business, it's a done deal. The project will generally be built.

In our part of Mexico, there have been several projects that were passed and started by one political party, only to be ended when an administration changes at the State or Municipal level. The whereabouts of the rest of the money disbursed to originally complete it is always a mystery that never seems to get solved. It makes for half-completed eye sores.

Good news!

Is dredging needed to use the new ramp or are you speaking about two different projects?

chuckie - 6-28-2016 at 08:39 AM

LOL..That river was dredged to death just before the last big flood....You can get out no problem if you watch the tides and pay attention...I still have a copy of Western Outdoor News, showing the Governor dedicating the ramp over by the lighthouse years ago..They tore out the usable ramp and left...To great fanfare of course...Don't hold your breath...

I don't think they need to dredge to use the new ramp; I was talking about after you launch and start the trek out to the lighthouse. Oftentimes it's only about 1.5 feet deep and I'm always worried about my prop churning the dirt. It's true that if you are aware of the tides and take your time then you'll be fine, but I was hoping that since they are investing in the ramp then hopefully they'll also dredge the shallow part too. Would be great if someone down there could post some photos of the progress!

bkbend - 6-28-2016 at 05:52 PM

Dredging is always nice but never a fix, only a band-aid. Even without another storm pushing silt/sand down the river the tidal actions will quickly move existing silt four times a day until it finds a happy equilibrium, probably about 1.5 feet deep at lower tides.

Thanks for the pics; really appreciate it. Man, this looks like it's going to be a real ramp; we're going to be spoiled when it's done!

chuckie - 6-30-2016 at 09:46 AM

So? Is that the mess they just made? Is it usable as is? How big is the crew working on it?

launch ramp

Chuckie,
Got pictures last night from your ole fishin buddies wife.. Does not look like the progress is mucho yet... I think she just took the pics in the last couple of days. If it keeps going it will be a nice treat after the last 7 years of all kinds of whack jobs... But alas, we sold our boat last year so can only go and watch the folks use it.. unless you know what happens this fall again...

I hope they finish it this time...Dunno why.like you, I sold my boat..and everything else:P

Wondering if anyone down there can give us an update on the ramp? I saw it in mid-July and it pretty much looked like the pictures someone had posted earlier so I didn't bother posting the ones I took. There were definitely workers around and lots of materials at the site so I'm guessing they have made some progress.

Bump; can anyone down there give us an update please?

gallesram - 9-27-2016 at 04:25 PM

Another bump; hope someone can give an update? Planning a trip down in mid-October and need to know whether launching is a possibility.

David K - 9-27-2016 at 04:30 PM

willy airstream lives there (Mulege) maybe shoot him a PM (u2u)?

gallesram - 9-27-2016 at 04:41 PM

Thanks David; good idea. I just did. If he replies I'm happy to share the news with everyone in case anyone cares (sounds like maybe I'm the only one?!)

David K - 9-27-2016 at 05:40 PM

I contacted him via Facebook PM, and he got your u2u... all is good in the world!:light:

gallesram - 9-28-2016 at 06:48 AM

Thanks again David; Willy gave me this reply for anyone who is interested:

"It is about 80% complete. No recent work due to Newton and the storm yesterday. The access on the north side is functional for launching."

gallesram - 10-31-2016 at 12:25 PM

I just heard that the ramp is finally completed; can anyone post some pictures please? Would like to see how it turned out!

Bob and Susan - 10-31-2016 at 02:58 PM

Thanks Bob; looks pretty fancy compared to the old ramp! Glad it's finally done.

dorado50 - 11-1-2016 at 10:33 AM

Beware the low tide....the river has been reformed! Not ideal.

Low tide has always been a concern there; is it worse now than before? My way of getting around that is to just avoid low tide and plan trips when the tides are favorable.

we're not having any trouble here on the bay this year...

That's the critical piece: the right car! Having gotten stuck in years past we now stick to concrete ramps and avoid spending our vacation trying to get the vehicle unstuck.
