Isn't 6 Mike on our BBBB? outside of SF on our way to Matomi Falls?

BajaBlanca - 7-3-2016 at 03:15 PM

The last one - ART?

Yes and No ;)

BBBB was M's party (Cielito Lindo)... The Matomi President's Day weekend group trip to Matomi was my creation. Mike was at both, however.

Ah yes, President's Day Weekend...that's what I was remembering! I think I went south to Playa San Rafael afterwards. That was a fun weekend. When is the next one?

StuckSucks - 7-3-2016 at 08:46 PM

3 is here:

5 is Percebu - I have that same photo in my library
7 SI - a no brainer
8 Rio Mulege, looking upstream from the Mission

I will work on the others ...

Lest we get spoken to by surfers. And rightfully so.

StuckSucks - 7-4-2016 at 09:32 AM

Is number 2 Cañada el Diabito, west of the lakebed?

4x4abc - 7-4-2016 at 10:59 AM

#1 the double beach at Alfonsina's - looking from Isla San luis Gonzaga

4x4abc - 7-4-2016 at 11:02 AM

#7 Laguna San Ignacio (taken from the road)
#8 Rio Mulege close to the mission

4x4abc - 7-4-2016 at 11:03 AM

I took the same picture of #5 in the mid 80's
somewhere on the way to Gonzaga

Exactly correct! I am on the trail up the island from the sand spit at Alfonsina's that divides Bahía San Luis Gonzaga (on the right/north) from the larger Ensenada de San Francisquito (on the left/south).

Maderita - 7-4-2016 at 12:12 PM

#10 = "Shell Island", approx 3/4 mile south of the Laguna Percebu beach camp/resort ?

#9 = site of the observatory, Sierra San Pedro Martir ?

#3 = south of Ejido Erenidira

#6 = perhaps east of the Sierra San Pedro Martir/near Diablo dry lake?

#2 = granitic boulders, volcanic or metamorphic above, palm canyon. hmmm, looks like an eastside canyon of the Sierra de Juarez or Sierra San Pedro Martir. Per your clue, perhaps Canyon Diablo?

Maderita - 7-4-2016 at 12:28 PM

#4 = Looks familiar. Maybe it's the quintessential beach camp that I dream about. It has been a few decades since I visited, but perhaps Punta San Francisquito ?

TMW - 7-4-2016 at 01:10 PM

6-Mike Humphyville (sp)
10-Shell Island

StuckSucks - 7-4-2016 at 01:38 PM

Here's a digiphoto of the airplane at Percebu:

Maderita - 7-4-2016 at 02:13 PM

#6 = perhaps east of the Sierra San Pedro Martir/near Diablo dry lake?

On second thought, perhaps Laguna Salada, photo shot from just east of Canyon Guadalupe, looking south toward Canyon Palomar ?

Maderita - 7-4-2016 at 02:59 PM

#2 = granitic boulders, volcanic or metamorphic above, palm canyon. hmmm, looks like an eastside canyon of the Sierra de Juarez or Sierra San Pedro Martir. Per your clue, perhaps Canyon Diablo?

If not Diablo, perhaps a canyon further south, and west of Valle Chico ?

9: Yes! Elev. 9,280'
10: Yes... but who is the Nomad who no longer drives a Ford Ranger.

Correct! The beach east of Punta San Francisquito Resort, circa 1983.

Yes, that is Mike Humfreville! Bajaboy guessed it was "Mike" earlier. Where is he examining the cholla?. Hint: Photo taken in 2001 and several Amigos de Baja, who are now Baja Nomads were with us there.

Maderita - 7-4-2016 at 04:03 PM

It has been a few decades since I've explored Sierra San Pedro Martir eastside canyons. Not Providencia to the north. Not Matomi to the south, to my recollection. So maybe in between at Agua Caliente, Berrendo, or Parral ?
You've got me consulting topo maps now! I'd rather be in Baja, but hate the holiday traffic. So, a fun game to play from home, thanks.

Maderita - 7-4-2016 at 04:18 PM

Ken Cooke. I mostly lurk here, but I recall the name of the Jeep Wrangler guy. An old climbing partner was Ken Cook (sans "e"), so I recall the name.

Maderita - 7-4-2016 at 07:15 PM

#2 = Canyon el Parral. So tranquil !
I cheated for that one and looked at your website photos. So glad I did. What a fantastic collection of photos over the years!

I saw a 1978 Baja Mil photo at Nuevo Junction. "German car mechanic." Was that Wally Schwaia? His son Wayne, built my VW buggy motor.

Winner!!!

Yes, my friends and I were at Nuevo Jcn. for the '78 SCORE Baja 1000 km... Where did you see that photo? LOL, I can't figure where I put it!

My friend Jon LaFrance captured Wally flying through the air. I worked for another German mechanic in Escondido, who knew Wally (Konrad Wallenda)... formerly one of the Flying Wallendas.

Wally Schawaia's car is at:
http://www.vivabaja.com/album/page4.html

#6 = ( I found it on your website and will leave it for another Nomad to report; perhaps someone who was on that trip).

Btw, how tall is the rock face of Cerro las Venecas do you reckon? Did you ever hear of an ascent? It's difficult to guess at the quality of the rock from the photo, but it looks vertical and tall.

David K - 7-4-2016 at 07:54 PM

With one photo still not identified as to the location (Mike Humfreville examining a cholla, in 2001)... it is safe to call Maderita the winner with enough points to earn him a copy of my new book...

U2U me your address and a signed copy will be sent this week.

If anyone is in San Diego, a week from Thursday (on July 14, 7 pm), and would like to see my little PowerPoint show on Baja and the missions, RSVP to Discover Baja Travel Club to reserve a seat: http://www.discoverbaja.com/event/david-kier-lecture/
