Ramp open

I drove down to Baja this morning and crossed at San Ysidro around 5:45 am. Very light traffic, but was pointed into secondary. Agent was very polite and opened the back for a quick look. The first exit ramp for the Internacional was open. Barriers are down, yet the eletronic sign with the detour is still there.

I always use the old highway to go south. I hit one green light after another. From Mexican Customs to the point where the Libramiento crosses the highway and just before the turnoff for La Gloria I hit two red lights. From La Gloria to the junction with the toll road I hit 3 red lights. I think this was some kind of record for me. The awkward U-turn to get onto the toll road going south is still there. I can see now where work is being done for the new ramp, which will exit to the right.

Returning to the US around 5 pm I checked the wait times at the border on a Mexican site. It said 20 minutes for Sentri at San Ysidro and 10 minutes at Otay. I choose to take the Blvd. 2000 to Otay. There was normal congestion in the area on Bellas Artes. The wait time was 10 mnutes. Traffic was light on 805 north bound and free flowing at the merge. It turned out to be much easier than I feared.

Crossed at SY today at 5:15pm, took me 50 minutes in SENTRI. Pretty congested overall.

woohoo! the southbound ramp from the free road to the toll road is done, keep an eye open it sneaks up on you. no more u-turn! :yes:

Yes, indeed! I took it last week. It has temporary guard rails on a very tight turn. I had to brake hard. Next time I will be taking it slower. Nice to have a ramp going south to the right. I never liked the old ramp to the left.

Hola,

myself, my son and grandson are going south to fish in san quintin again.

can someone please give good instructions to the toll road from san ysidro to a navigationally impaired older nomad ?

would it be fairly well signed since june ?

if it's more confusing, we better cross south at tecate where we normally cross going north.

Hola Rat,

I crossed southbound at San Ysidro last Thursday with some trepidation because I have not gone that way for a few years and heard about detours, etc. but it was easy. Big sweeping left turn approaching the new booths, all the lanes were open and the lights were turned off, after passing the booths there is a well-signed ramp on the right that dumps you on to the same old highway along the border that goes west up and then down the hill towards playas de Tijuana, right turn at the bottom of the hill, well-signed, easy peasy. I think one of the insurance companies (Bajabound?) has posted pictures of the new crossing on their web site.

The toll road is in beautiful shape all the way to Ensenada.
