U.S. group launches effort to clean up tires along U.S.-Mexico border

An estimated million tires line the streets of Baja California, Mexico. They�ve been lying around for years: in Baja�s waterways, canyons and highways, not only destroying the environment but harboring disease-carrying mosquitoes.

For the past two and a half years, Wildcoast, a nonprofit organization that seeks to conserve coastal and marine ecosystems along the U.S.-Mexico border, has been pushing to address the issue. Last month, with funding from the state of California, Wildcoast begun a one-year pilot program to collect tires and recycle them into new products.

The pilot program seeks to collect as many tires as possible, shred them and turn them into bricks, artificial grass, swings, asphalt and shoes.

Sounds like a great idea. It would be fantastic if they also pick up whatever trash is right next to the tires...

OK. So, I've seen some tires. But a million tires just sounds like hyperbole to me. Almost have to wonder if this is some sort of grifting organization. I could be wrong, but a million tires? Really?

Wildcoast is a good non-profit environmental organization. HQ is in Imperial Beach, which is just north of the TJ River mouth, and it's headed by Serge Dedina, the current mayor of Imperial Beach. He's a lifelong IB surfer and put the organization together 15 years ago.

If anybody has environmental concerns in northern baja, especially sewage outfalls that need to be cleaned up, contact them. They know who to contact in the Baja California city and state governments. I know they are working to get the Punta Banda outfall improved and deal closely with ocean water quality monitoring programs in the border area.

This is the outfall at Punta Banda from the sewage treatment plant on the east side of the toll road near Real Del Mar. Obviously a pipe out into deep water is needed like the main San Diego treatment plant and border treatment plant use.

Discarded tires emit toxic gasses....NOT good for one's house....no matter how good the idea looked in the Whole Earth Catalogue :coolup:

"Sandra was quick to dispel the myth about the tires' toxicity. This is not a problem when filled with dirt and sealed tightly with adobe. It is much more problematic when they are discarded in open fields or in the ocean"

If you ever travel Blvd 2000 between Baja Studios, Rosarito and the Otay border crossing you will see a 5 hecater parcel completely coverd with tires stacked at least 10 high and that alone could amount to 250.000.

She is welcome to it.....adobe is still a porous conglomerate....and I doubt it is a true "sealant"....

No arguing....would rather use straw bales than petro-chemicals for alternative construction....

Driven that route many times. Never saw a quarter of a million tires there. Guess I just drive blind and drunk.

Speaking of Tire Graveyards, do a search and check out the photos on the massive (said to be 7 Million+) Kuwaiti Tire Dump.
