San Pedro Matir questions

Howard - 7-12-2016 at 05:03 PM

1: How many campgrounds are there going up the road?

2: Do any of them have electric?

3: Approximate elevation of the various campgrounds?

The reason I ask this is I temporarily probably need to use an Oxygen concentrator and to run my RV generator would be pretty loud.

Normally I wouldn't give it a thought and would not need electric or care about the elevation but getting old like you guys can be no fun.

We would like to make the trip the first week in October on the way south, ultimately to Loreto.

Thanks for your help.

It has been a while since I went to the Observatory, but based on reading posts, I think it is a far more rustic up there then maybe you may want... no power... Vallecitos Meadow is at 8,000 feet.

I hope you get better answers, but this is Baja, off the grid and a long way from civilization. Dark Skies Inn (if anyone is still there) is halfway up from Meling's to the Park entrance station and then a few dirt miles down the mountain from the paved road.

Been a couple years but I don't remember any rv parks. An alternative would be to stay and melling ranch and go to the top as a day trip.

Thanks for the reply. Can you camp at Melling Ranch or is it just rooms and is there electric? I don't mind paying for camping as long as it has electric.

I second that Stay at El Coyotes/or Melings keep charged up.Day trip to park as Ed suggested.Dark Sky's Inn no go for RV,dont think there there anyway. Nice place to RV camp at Coyotes grass/trees. Side note if Rv camping up in park. You could find a spot and run your generator.Big place not many people up there.

What about the Early Bird Specials?

The campground is bare bones. Pretty and isolated, but no electric. Mehling prob could give you electric. Call them and ask.

I suggest you take bottled 02 and enjoy the mountain camping.

Meling's runs a generator for power and turn it off around 10. El Coyote is solar with batteries , not sure they could run your concentrator all night. El Coyote is 6 miles off the pavement, pretty bumpy, but doable. I have towed a 20+ foot enclosed trailer in there numerous times. Wet weather might be shaky.

Was at San Pedro Martir last week, and the campgrounds did not have electricity. GPS elevation was anywhere from 8000 to 8500ft. It was beautiful.

Coyotes has camping, pool, outside bathrooms.Nice camp spot, trees, grass. Melings Camping/pool/ but no trees/grass. None with Rv hook ups.

There is no electricity at San Pedro Mártir. The observatory uses generators. Power cables are being run up to the observatory, but it could be a long time before there is electricity at the campground in the park. You could probably find an isolated area to park your RV and run your generator. Figure minimum altitude of 8000 ft.

As already stated, the Meling Ranch uses a generator that is turned off at 10 pm. You can email the ranch and ask if you can park your RV at some distance from the buildings and grassy area where campers pitch tents near the pool. The elevation is around 3000 ft.

Any recent reports on San Pedro Matir? I've been up there a few times in the past, but thinking of heading up there again next week on my way south.

Rain in so cal and north baja forecast on this Friday, so may get more snow at SPM. Check the Facebook page for the park, they post notices of FB page when they close for snow and open up again.

Did the underground electric cable installed all the way from the grid at lower elevations to the observatory fail to be completed? It was installed several years ago. The construction caused driving difficulties as it went down the side and even under the road.
