Nearly everything stolen in Baja is on the way to the mainland by panga - only minutes thereafter.
Reason for that, in Baja you can find everything, even a stolen elephant.
The stolen goods are brought to Mexico D.F. where there is a huge second hand market and nobody is asking where the merchandise is coming from.

Erendira is on the Pacific side of Baja, not far south of Ensenada. No panga is taking a motorcycle from there, to the mainland. Taking a panga 60 miles across the Sea of Cortes can't be an easy thing to do, either!??

@ DK: I didn`t know where Erendira is located. I was posting my knowledge of Baja Sur in general. There is of course also the possibility to take things apart and sell parts.

More miles of coastline is along the Pacific side. The odds of talking a motorcycle on a panga any distance are very very slight. Heck, when Cameron Steele's tour tried to take some from Mulegé across the bay to Punta Concepción, they soon met with disaster! The bikes were fished out, fortunately.

The red/blue arrow points to near Erendira (Coyote Cal's) location on the peninsula.

Maps of Baja are pretty critical to have when discussing Baja subjects, especially if you do not even know where they are.

Thanks DK for the info! Living in Cabo San Lucas and passing through Baja Norte occasionally, makes me not smart enough knowing every village or little town in Norte. THX again.
Although I was a good friend to JR Baja and he was somehow your preferred enemy, I always admired your capability of submitting those many maps for information!!

Major bummer....my 690 was stolen a few years ago in San Felipe and a series of posters w/ pic I posted around town with a reward of $15,000 MP (about $1300 Can $$) got the bike back 2 days later....

They steal them usually by rolling them away....I was in a panaderia for 5 minutes when mine was stolen....padlock a disc rotor or cable lock is a good deterrent, but if they really want it....

I consider myself VERY lucky to have it back.....best of luck with your bike.

just this morning on my homepage was a advertisement for these small coin size trackers that work with your smartphone, obviously you need a signal but they're cheap and designed for your car,bike,boat,electronics,whatever.....anyone looked into these???

That`s a darn good idea!! With an electronic tracking device you can go after your vehicle right away. But you need a signal. Better than calling the police > as they normally do nothing unless you pay them some mordida.
A friend of mine here in CSL has a BMW R1100S and secures it with a steel cable every time he is off the bike. But a tracking device is the next best idea!

In person, JR and I were friends... the stuff on Nomad was for drama that JR liked to drum up. He was so funny about that. Carol was also very nice to know. I have been to their La Barca trailer a few times... photos of one time when we had a get-together there to meet Baja Cactus are posted at VivaBaja.com.

Brad; check impound yards within a 300 mile (mas o meno) area. As in, as far south as San Quintin and El Rosario. A lot of times these coyotes end up either wrecking them or getting caught, but the local policia aren't going to waste time looking for you; it's up to you to do the footwork. I know a couple of bikes retrieved like that, then the cops want the reward...... I think not! Anyway, happy hunting, hope you get it back.

Hope the motorcycle shows up. reward is a good start. My car was stolen 2 weeks ago and I did the same thing. BUT info that came back to me was that the bandits were paying more than I was for protection. Baja is changing fast. By he way JC, in the case of cars they are either parted out immediately or repainted and sold. No need for registration and plates in many parts of Baja Sur.

Absolutely correct! But with motorcycles it is somehow different, or? I know that there are many cycle stores in Ensenada. Maybe Brad might have luck looking at them?

There is a small gang of thieves,that live in Erendira that go after dirt bikes.They are well known to police.I know the story I think you guys got there way late at night.Coyotes has lock down cage,that will hold 3/5 bikes.Or bikes need be inside courtyard,Or big lock.Never leave unlocked bike out.Since I live in the area,Im checking with all riding buddys if they see this bike. I may be going by the area in a few days, and could put up some flyers, down to San Quintin, at Old Mill, etc. Maybe a reward flyer in english y espanol will catch someone's attention.

When I've stayed there I always worried about someone rolling my bike away and right down the hill into a truck. Usually used a padlock through the front disc. Just a light plastic shelled one is easy to carry on the bike, and at least reguires some effort to move the bike.

Sorry to hear about the theft. U2U me a picture, or any more distinguishing features so I can keep an eye out. Hopefully it will turn up before I leave though.

this is actually good news as if it is a known band of theives, the cops or one of the band could get your bike back for a good reward...they will know where it is...so you need someone on the ground to visit the cops or local thugs and wave cash at them.

depends on alot of circumstances. I can tell you from experience that what doesnt work is when gringos leave the scene of the theft and expect the cops to follow up. They think if you leave that you dont really care about getting it back. One either needs to be there personally bugging them or have someone else present to represent them and keep the pressure up.

If someone who locally knows the cops... that is best and they can chat with the best cop and sound out what it would take to get the goods back. It is complicated but can be effective if the right people are involved...capiche?

Agree with Shari, but the folks with the most to lose is Coyote Cals as they have an ongoing business in the community and the rider likely only visits infrequently (if ever again after this). CC needs to follow up as an agent of the owner.
The good news is that based on CC's Facebook they are infact very involved in the recovery of the bike.
As a gringo tourist I rely on business which cater to us being relatively secure and safe and should there be a problem using their influence with the locals to correct and curtail such problems or the community can kiss those jobs and $ goodby.
