Anyone using a dash cam in Baja?

Lee - 8-5-2016 at 10:14 AM

Just wondering what others are using? My Nikon Coolpix needs a larger memory card for what I want.

Don't run one at the border gates. Legal or not, they don't like it and they're the boss.

Ever thought about buying a GoPro but don't have the money for it? Well now you can own a SJCAM for a lot less than the GoPro and with better quality and more accessorizes.

bought the Costco dashcam ($99) a year ago or so and other than the suction cup popping off the windshield when the vehicle gets hot has performed flawlessly

The only thing I would recommend is checking into is resolution and zoom abilities

Several days after installing the unit I was I-15 southbound out of Escondido and a road rage situation caused an accident about a quarter mile ahead. Reviewing the footage you could tell what happened but detail and ID of the vehicles , that had both passed me , was not that great.

I bought a couple of these after I got tired of the suction cups falling off. They work great and have adapters for various types of camera mounting systems

Many cars now come with back up cameras,... Why don't car makers offer option of built in car cams so people can avoid cluttering their dash with cameras and powers cords?

I think some Toyota Tacoma models now comes with a dashboard GoPro mount, special equipment for the Tecno geek kids

I use an SJ5000. Make sure it is the model with three buttons on the side. Some vendors pass off ones with two side buttons. Not what you want.

By the way, you can buy a water and dust proof case aftermarket that allows you to plug in to 12v while it's in the case. Helps on long bike rides.

I have made 3 or 4 trips up and down (as far as Loreto) in the past year with a dash cam prominently mounted in my car. I have never had anyone at either the border or at a checkpoint make any mention of it. I let it run constantly (both front and rear) as well as recording sound, speed and location. I have never had to "use" it but it seems like cheap insurance against corruption and other problems on the road.

It would be cool to have one on the drive down Hwy. 5 last week so you could see more of what has and has not been done on that project.

tobianogreg - 8-20-2018 at 02:45 PM

Picked up an Oasser HD dashcam specifically for our upcoming trip to SJD. Works great so far and *sigh* have already found it useful.

Use a Yi dash cam for the last year, travel from El Soccorito about once a month to San Diego on Hwy 1 and the only time we ever had an issue was at US customs, they are a touchy bunch.
