no problem, paved all the way
rough in spots and watch out for large potholes in the Catavina area, +/- 50 miles or so
some killer speed bumps as you enter towns

Comments are spot on about the potholes around Catavina. They must use cow excrement to fill them.
I've made the trip from SoCal to Cabo many times in a number of vehicles. The highway in BCS is in better shape overall than in BC.
If you are going to Cabo, make sure to take the highway that goes to Todos Santos just South of La Paz. It is all four lane and shaves a bunch of time

Which ever road you take from La Paz to Cabo, you might as well return on the other. It would be a shame to drive that far and not get the full tour!
Personally, I prefer the scenery on the East side. And then there is the highway five option, but the 23 miles of dirt road may be more than you

Don't drive at night. The 4x4s are not needed, the road ins paved to Cabo. Lock your car at night. And disregard those on this forum that have to

I drove a Toyota Corolla from Ensenada to Guerrero Negro in March and the road was better than the year before. Yes, keep an eye out for potholes!
But there were fewer this year and they were working on them as we went by.
It's not a USA freeway, but really any car can handle it if you are careful of the BIG potholes. There aren't that many huge ones, but you do want to
miss the few that can break your car.
Drive in the daytime, keep your speed down. But you will see stretches of road where you can run 80-90 pretty comfortably. Just keep an eye out for
where that fast stretch ends!

Be sure to top off your gas tank in El Rosario. The distance between El Rosario and Villa Jesus Maria is about 200 miles and there are no PEMEX
stations between those two locations.

And I have to agree with AKgringo about seeing both routes. For me, when heading South, I just want to get to Cabo as fast as I can. We have

Filling gas tank in El Rosario isn't an euphemism at all. Less important with a compact car though.
And again, getting to Cabo as fast as you can = taking commercial flight from Tijuana or San Diego
Back to the OP: the road (often) sucks for the first 1/3. Done this in a small Mazda, nothing terrible, but...but... Potholes, cracked paving, vados,
ongoing repairs. Less painful with a bigger vehicle, doesn't have to be 4WD, just bigger wheels. TedZark - 8-14-2016 at 04:47 AM
I missed what date the OP is making their journey, but right now there is a lot of construction between Santo Tomas and San Vicente (about 30 minutes
south of Ensenada) - several miles of rough dirt detour - several times. And occasional delays/stops (not always). Quite slow through there as there
are construction vehicles as well as semis - all going super slow so as to not break their suspensions.
It will be quite nice when done, but an annoyance at the moment.
