MAG BAY REPORT - August 24, 2016

With fishing tournaments up and down the Sea of Cortez, some with more than 100 boats competing, being won by 10 - 12 pound dorado it must be time for a positive fishing report. So, here's one from the other side of the peninsula.

During the week ending yesterday I fished four days on the banks outside Mag Bay. The weather was good, the water a warm 76 - 77 degrees, and there was bait all over the place. Small tuna were trapping the bait up against the surface and schools of striped marlin were slashing through the balls and gorging themselves. I caught my limit of wahoo each of the four days, and also picked up two small tuna and a marlin that hit a fast trolled wahoo lure. Sea turtles were basking in the sun in the calm water and there were whales cruising the area. It was a good place to be.

Below are some pics taken over the four days. They are in no particular order since this site seems to scramble them, at least when I try to post them.

gracias for the report and great photos...what was the most successful wahoo lure?...I saw like 5 different ones.
We are anxiously awaiting the wahoo and tuna up here but the water needs to warm up a bit more. Nice calm weather here this week too up north of you....so they can finish up abalone once and for all!

Shari.....The wahoo were hitting on just about anything. Yesterday I caught five hoos, and two more smaller ones that I released, and two yellowfin all on a Halco Laser Pro 190 that I had painted white/pink for the early morning gray light. It was never in the water more than five or ten minutes without getting hit, and I was headed back to the boca before 9:00 a.m.

JEEZE! What a report! Can you bring your boats over here and bring some fish also? No one here that I've heard from out fishing. Actually there are only 3 of us in Chivato now. Thoughts of yesteryear when there was a crowd of folks on the camping beach and the fishing was nuts for dorado, billfish and all the inshore fishes. So sad now

Nice report. Did notice the "Excel" boat on there. I assume they were fishing there. I would advise no one to use that outfitter. Total disrespect for the resource and super contaminants of the seas. I know I saw it all on a trip in 2014. And also lost my life. Ventured 600 miles out in the Pacific with no first aid to sew up wounds. I was lucky I did not lose my leg. And if you like rubbing elbows with about 25 fisherman and getting your lines tangled....

Wow, great reports and pix. I always look carefully at your rigging and try to remember exactly what you have done; you definitely have it dialed in.

Santiago.....For those Halco Laser Pros I make up leaders about 3' long with from 275# 49 strand SS cable with a McMahon snap crimped on one end and a barrel swivel on the other. I cover the crimp and half the snap and swivel on either end with shrink tube to keep it straight and avoid sharp edges and strands of wire.

I've been across the hill twice since that report and caught two more limits of wahoo, a half dozen small yellowfin, and another striper that hit a YZ Bonita intended for a wahoo. Pelagic red crabs have joined the smorgasbord of bait and there was a whale shark inhaling them. When I stopped the boat to get a photo of the crabs the shark bumped the keel and lifted me 6" inches or so.

No telephone/Internet in my end of town in Loreto since Newt.......
