Update Regarding Diesel Fuel on the Baja

MexicoDiesel - 8-25-2016 at 08:36 PM

Felt it was time to share the test results from diesel fuel samples I collected in the Northern Baja during 2015 and early 2016. Those results continue to suggest that ULSD (Ultra Low Sulfur Diesel) is probably the norm at all of the Pemex stations in the Northern Baja down to, and including, Jesus Maria, which is about 35 kms north of the border with the Southern Baja. Mexican LSD is all you will find at stations in the Southern Baja, as well as the one station just north of the border with the Southern Baja.

Interesting to note though that a sample taken at El Rosario in late March of 2016 had sulfur levels at 42.9 ppm, which is way above the maximum allowed for ULSD (15 ppm), but nowhere near the 350 ppm which could be found in Mexican diesel.

A subsequent sample, taken in early June of 2016, was found to contain sulfur at 18 ppm, which suggests that the tank at the El Rosario Pemex received at least one delivery of Mexican LSD prior to March of 2016, but has since been receiving ULSD - sulfur levels are now almost back down to the 15 ppm spec for ULSD.

In other words, although my regular testing has generally found ULSD to be the norm in the Northern Baja, there is always the risk that there may be temporary "contamination" with Mexican diesel at any station. This situation will persist until Mexico upgrades its refineries to produce ULSD.

As for the Mainland of Mexico, Gulf Oil has become the first foreign oil company to open stations in Mexico and has an ambitious plan to open 1,000 stations by the end of 2017. Gulf will apparently be allowed to bring in its own supply of fuel from the USA as of 2017, so Gulf stations, if you can find them, may have ULSD in 2017. See one article about the changes here: http://latino.foxnews.com/latino/money/2016/06/09/mexico-get...

As always, if anyone has information to share, or questions about the effect of Mexican diesel might have on their vehicle, feel free to contact me at whitetmp@aol.com

So where are the test results? We need data, not summary. Date, result, test method, location.

Thank you for your testing. Interesting that the station in El Rosario got a delivery of LSD.

You could always do your own tests goat.....does your bicycle use diesel fuel? :bounce:

I kinda wondered about that..Why would a goat without a diesel want detail reults?

Well, I like data.

The question you should ask, why does someone claim to be sharing results but not show underlying data?:light:

Well, Goatley, I just don't care...

Thanks for the data MexicoDiesel. I think most of us will gladly accept your findings without requesting that you jump through any hoops in producing any other data that most of us wouldn't understand anyway
. I run my diesel and DEF powered RV in Baja and so far no problems.

Great report, good to know. Thanks for the post. Love the smell of diesel in the morning.

In anticipation of bringing my diesel powered RV (that uses DEF and needs ULSD) to Baja soon, I was wondering if the stations in northern Baja were still selling ULSD, and specifically about that new station just north of the border separating north and south Baja (on the north edge of military base that sits on the border)? So great timing on providing this update - Thanks

yes.

MD on both of my diesels they both have more power and MPGs. On Mexican Diesel, then with Ca Diesel. Can you comment on that.
