Good News / Bad News

chivatojoe - 8-30-2016 at 09:08 PM

Well first for the good news. The Punta Chivato Hotelito and restaurant has changed hands . This should bring a new electrical system which should extend the open season and provide a always appreciated spot to grab a cold beer and a meal. It also has 10 fresh new rooms with AC and a small pool.
Be great to have the traveler once again come and stay and try their luck at some fishing.
Now the BAD news..where have all the Dorado gone in the Sea of Cortez? Really a 12.6 pound wins a Tacoma pick up in the Palmas De Cortez contest with many fisherman?
Haven't heard of any fish report out of Loreto or Mulege and certainly not Chivato. Seems they have all traveled to SoCal and Oceanside....Even the shark buoys at Cabo are empty of bait...
Ah bait.... maybe all the seiners have scooped up so much that the fish have travelled to where they can eat.. Maybe escapees from the Tuna Pens off Ensenada?
And now to the point... Many businesses and individuals in Baja Sur count on their livelihood with a vibrant sport fish population. With modern day big boat operations including spotter planes how will the industry ever survive. Someone must see the error in their ways and allow the fish species to stage a comeback to at least a survivable level? Maybe every other year rape and pillage the sardine and anchovies ? I guess when there are no more the boats will move on as the tuna fleet did in San Diego 35 years ago?
Really can't blame this one on climate change just a group of greedy well connected individuals who have a total disregard for the balance of nature:?:

Sounds like good news about Hotelito. Who is the new owner? You?

That is good news always enjoyed having a beer and bite to eat there. now if someone would buy the big hotel and open it back up had some great memories out on the patio with our family.

Is Hotelito the one I marked in the image. We were in Punta Chivato a couple of years ago and looked around at two hotels.

No. That is the Hacienda, the former Campbell house.

Hotelito is the newer, smaller, hotel with attached restaurant, next to Dona Julia's restaurant. It is on the road you would have driven from HWY 1, on the way to the Hacienda, between the end of the runway and the Hacienda. It's about 5 mins walking distance from the Hacienda.

That is really great news about Hotelito changing hands although we always stay with Doc and Bunnie! Having a restaurant as an option is muy bueno indeed.

On our side they are taking the overfishing quite seriously - to the point where they are so concerned about the small and low numbers of the grouper and totally discourage taking any of them. All must be catch and release. They say they allow one but boy....try getting them to let you do it hahahaha Our fisher guests have not been able to !

No fish report from Loreto because there's no fish in Loreto. By that I mean Dorado. Still getting good bottom fish real deep.

We finished the year end Tournament for FONMAR which had 85 of the best teams in baja competing (including one from Punta Chivato) and a 17 lb fish one first, 12 lb second and there was no third place.
If you want some real in-depth treatment of this issue watch the following you tube videos.

Yep, and those videos were shot/published in 2009 and still no enforcement of this fishery:fire:

BigBearRider - 9-1-2016 at 04:06 PM

Agreed that the fishing issue is concerning. But, who bought the restaurant?

BajaMama - 9-5-2016 at 02:24 PM

We see the big bait boats from Punta Chivato, it breaks my heart that they are decimating the waters. Mexico being Mexico, I think officials would rather accept a bribe than enforce laws. With small planes and a few enforcement boats at the mouth of the SOC, it would not be that hard to keep foreign poachers out, but unfortunately those poachers have large countries to feed. sucks for us.

BTW I thought the place tagged in the pics used to be called Wally's World!!

This is good news about El Hotelito. Especially if the season gets extended.

When you say ten NEW rooms, do you mean they added ten new rooms to the existing rooms or they refurbished the existing rooms?

I would cruise over and use that hotel regularly, in the summer, IF the fishing improves. But I ain't holding my breath. Mexican commercial fishing enforcement officials are just so totally corrupted, it's pathetic. I am tired of the excused of no funds to afford enforcement. That's complete BS.

"Dolphin Safe " caused the San Diego tuna fleet to home port outside of U.S. jurisdiction - nothing more...
