TROPICAL WEATHER OUTLOOK
NWS NATIONAL HURRICANE CENTER MIAMI FL
500 AM PDT THU SEP 1 2016

For the eastern North Pacific...east of 140 degrees west longitude:

1. Showers and thunderstorms are showing some signs of organization in association with a trough of low pressure located several hundred miles southeast of Acapulco, Mexico. Environmental conditions are expected to be conducive for development of this system, and a tropical depression is likely to form over the weekend while the low moves west-northwestward or northwestward near the coast of Mexico. Interests along the southern and southwestern coast of Mexico should monitor the progress of this disturbance. Locally heavy rain, flash floods and mud slides are possible in those areas starting tomorrow and continuing through the weekend.
* Formation chance through 48 hours...medium...50 percent
* Formation chance through 5 days...high...80 percent

2. A weak area of low pressure is located about 1000 miles south- southwest of the southern tip of the Baja California peninsula. This system is expected to drift westward during the next few days, and any development should be slow to occur due to strong upper-level winds.
* Formation chance through 48 hours...low...10 percent
* Formation chance through 5 days...low...20 percent

Yes now, but if it is what I think, the next hurricane (if it becomes one) will be called Newton.

TROPICAL WEATHER OUTLOOK
NWS NATIONAL HURRICANE CENTER MIAMI FL
500 AM PDT SAT SEP 3 2016

For the eastern North Pacific...east of 140 degrees west longitude:

1. An elongated area of low pressure continues to produce an extensive
area of disorganized cloudiness and showers, extending several
hundred miles south through southwest of the southern coast of
Mexico. Upper-level winds are expected to become more conducive for
development, and this area of disturbed weather is likely to
consolidate and become a tropical depression on Sunday or Monday
while it moves nearly parallel to the southwest coast of Mexico.

Regardless of development, gusty winds and heavy rains causing flash
floods and mud slides are expected in coastal portions of the
Mexican states of Oaxaca, Guerrero, Michoacan, Colima, Jalisco and
Nayarit this weekend into early next week. Interests in these areas
and Baja California Sur should monitor the progress of this
disturbance.
* Formation chance through 48 hours...high...70 percent
* Formation chance through 5 days...high...90 percent

Forecast says 80% chance in Abraojos and Guerrero Negro... so maybe.

Forecast has been upgraded for Gonzaga Bay though for 1-2 inches. This is not good for travelers midweek.

tiotomasbcs - 9-4-2016 at 07:02 AM

This storm reminds me of Javier about a month ago. Wind estimates don't look too bad and that's good! We don't have flooding issues except for the arroyos and most have bridges. Just saw a truck heading back to La Paz filled with large generators govt had sent to Cabo earlier, I believe. Summer fun. :o:coolup: Tio

This one should be just a rain maker...but September is notoriously the worst month for hurricanes. Maybe the government is just covering for any flooding in La Paz.

HURRICANE NEWTON DISCUSSION NUMBER 5
NWS NATIONAL HURRICANE CENTER MIAMI FL EP152016
300 PM MDT MON SEP 05 2016

Satellite images indicate that Newton is continuing to strengthen.
A ragged eye has formed on the latest visible pictures, with a more
symmetric overall pattern in the eyewall. The Air Force Reserve
Hurricane Hunters have already found peak 700 mb flight-level winds
of 74 kt, which supports making Newton a 65-kt hurricane at this
time. Further strengthening is expected until landfall since Newton
is in an environment of light shear and very warm water. The
official NHC forecast continues to be above the intensity consensus
in the short term with rapid intensification a distinct possibility.
Note the intensity could peak a little higher than shown below since
landfall is forecast in between the 12 and 24 hour forecast points.
Weakening is anticipated by tomorrow afternoon due to interaction
with the rough terrain of the Baja California peninsula but, given
the fast motion, Newton is expected to remain at least a strong
tropical storm until its final landfall in Sonora.

Newton is moving quickly to the northwest or 325/14. Newton
should gradually turn northward and northeastward over the next 48
hours as it moves around the western periphery of a ridge over the
southern United States. The biggest change in the latest model
cycle is that almost everything is faster and a bit to the left of
the previous guidance. This makes sense because, with a stronger
Newton, the strong southeasterly and southerly flow aloft would
steer the deeper storm in that direction. The new NHC track
prediction is adjusted to the north and west throughout the period.

Newton is expected to be a large hurricane at landfall, and hazards
are likely to affect a large portion of Baja California Sur and
northwestern Mexico. In addition, moisture associated with the
remnants of Newton could cause heavy rains and localized flash
flooding over parts of Arizona and New Mexico.

6pm update from NATIONAL HURRICANE CENTER MIAMI FL
DISCUSSION AND 48-HOUR OUTLOOK
------------------------------
At 600 PM MDT (0000 UTC), the center of Hurricane Newton was located
near latitude 20.9 North, longitude 108.6 West. Newton is moving
toward the northwest near 16 mph (26 km/h), and this general motion
is expected to continue through early Tuesday. A turn toward the
north-northwest, and then to the north, is expected late Tuesday and
Wednesday. On the forecast track, Newton should be near or over the
southern tip of the Baja California peninsula early Tuesday morning,
move over portions of the southern Baja California peninsula late
Tuesday, and move into northwestern Mexico on early Wednesday.

Data from an Air Force Reserve Hurricane Hunter aircraft indicate
that the maximum sustained winds have increased to near 85 mph
(140 km/h) with higher gusts. Some additional strengthening is
expected before landfall.

Hurricane-force winds extend outward up to 45 miles (75 km) from
the center and tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 150
miles (240 km).

Well, we did wake up about 1:30 AM to the sound of a freight train passing by. Hope we don't have one of those later on tonite. I am sure it will keep me advised.
Russ, I think it is headed your way next, so good luck to you also.

10 p.m. Heavy rain in CSL. Downtown , it`s a mess , all streets covered with mud and gravel. I`m staying home but can watch the downtown area pretty good w/ binoculars. No humans anywhere.
This is no good for Baja. Not for Cabo. Not for Loreto. Poor Mulege, you will suffer a long time b/c of this hurricane. Baja economy needs no hurricane at all !!!

Gulliver - 9-5-2016 at 09:36 PM

We have a house down in Floodlandia along the Mulege estuary. This can actually help the economy there as we foolish gringos spend quite a bit having flood damage repaired. Things have been awfully quite for a couple of years.

We strip the house to the rafters when we leave for the Summer but our front yard takes a beating. Hard to invest in nice plants when they will end up on the beach at Chivato.

For Mulege this is storm number six in fourteen years. Ah, well.

StuckSucks - 9-6-2016 at 08:13 AM

Last Updated: 9/6/2016, 8:00:00 AM (PDT)

Newton's satellite appearance has begun to deteriorate. The cyclone's cloud pattern is characterized by a ragged eye, which has been filling, and breaks in the western eyewall. The center of Newton is expected to traverse the rugged terrain of Baja California sur today, and its interaction with land should result in steady weakening. After the center emerges in the Gulf of California late this afternoon or evening, it is not expected to spend much time over water before making a second landfall in northwestern Mexico early Wednesday. With an increase in southwesterly shear forecast around that time, either a steady intensity or slow weakening is likely prior to the second landfall. Once Newton moves inland over northwestern Mexico, the low- to mid-level centers are likely to separate when the circulation passes over the Sierra Madre Occidental, and rapid weakening is forecast. Newton continues to be a large tropical cyclone, and hazards extend well away from the center. These hazards will affect a large portion of Baja California sur and northwestern Mexico during the next day or so. Moisture associated the remnants of Newton are likely to cause heavy rains and localized flash flooding over parts of Arizona and New Mexico Wednesday and Thursday.

Russ - 9-6-2016 at 08:14 AM

Wind and rain gone now it's almost nice other than the overcast. Barometer steady. Wind at 5mph only .14" of rain in my gauge that isn't very accurate.

pacsur - 9-6-2016 at 08:56 AM

Just got off the phone with my neighbor in San Jose, near Costa Azul area, I was able to contact her by calling her dedicated landline.
She said power went off around 9pm last night, serious wind, damages seem to be mainly trees and gardens, standard big mess.
Power just went back on for her around 9:15am this morning, sat tv working, but no internet for her at least, I have also been unable to contact anybody else who just use cel phones, text and what's app no luck either yet, airport still showing no power.

10am San Jose time the Internet just came back online for some.

Calm before (and between) the storm! The eye is still way south of you Russ. Hang in there amigo!

Looks like La Paz is getting whacked right now.

This is all very good news. Thanks for the update. Maybe not so bad as the last one. Thanks!

Looks like the eye is over Rob and Baja Linda's (Rancho La Aguja)?
Just minutes later that site shows the eye over Mission San Luis Gonzaga (20 mi. southeast of Constitucion)!

Hi All, Could not log on with my old password and dyslexia cause the spelling error. The Loreto Mission Hotel webcam is back on after going out last night. http://www.webcamsdemexico.com/webcam-loreto.html

From our friend in Costa Azul in San Jose del Cabo;

"We're good just a ton of leaves, branches and debris in the yard. The winds were strong and sustained but nothing like Odile, plus they were outside and not in the house! The neighborhood looks a mess but windows are in tack and the cars are all fine... Scary but it will all come back together quickly."

Thank you so much those of you with boots on the ground...I hope everyone is safe if not soggy. We had no internet or cell service till a half hour ago so i was really itching for reports.

It is starting to cloud up a bit here in Asuncion with 5 knots of wind from the south and no swell...prolly not get any rain as usual...dang it...but I did 2 loads of laundry this morning just in case.

Just got the internet back on and we have connection to the world. Still windy but no rain. Lotsa trash all over - just like last time. The Sea of Cortez is very restless - re-arranged our beach for us.
All is good - time for lunch.

CJ - 9-6-2016 at 11:56 AM

We lost our internet and cell service around midnight last night. It came back on around ten this morning. A light rain started around 5:00am and been raining off and on all day, hard at times. The wind has been steady as well....gusts up to 55mph. At noon Calle Juarez, Calle Salveteria were flooded, the Palapa Restaurant has about ten inches of water it, the waves are coming over the sidewalk on the malecon. Some unfortunate sailor left his sailboat out in front of the harbor a few weeks ago....it's now on the beach wedged between a couple of palapas next to Chili Willies and being salvaged by the locals; I'm sure the 30' mast will be gone in a few hours; that aluminium is worth some $$'s. All in all things aren't too bad. It looks like around five or six thing might start picking up around here....literally. The wind has gotten stronger while I have been writing this......Suerte,CJ

Power just came back on here (3PM). We think we have almost seen the end of Newton. We had a nice break late morning for a couple of hours when the eye probably went right over us. Wind from the west now with light rain. That was quite a storm though - not quite Odile, but quite strong. Those north of us (Lopez Mateos, San Juanico) I'd guess you've got a few more hours of this. Stay safe everyone.
