San Ignacio - Best Hotels

TLBaja79 - 10-3-2016 at 03:37 PM

What are the best hotels to stay at in San Ignacio?
Planning a trip in late November, will the whale tourism be full swing then?

We will just be driving through and don't want to pay too much and don't need too much but clean and nice room.

Restaurants too if you know of a good one.

We have been a few times and don't really have a fav hotel/restaurant.

David K - 10-3-2016 at 04:02 PM

La Huerta (motel) is just past the mission, on the right. A market is at the entrance, and they are building a restaurant. Have stayed there in 2015 and this past month... $31 for a single king bed.

The Desert Inn Hotel is along the entrance road into town from Hwy. 1, about $90 last year when we asked (the La Huerta was full on our second trip through San Ignacio). We stayed at Ricardo's (Rice and Beans) motel, $50, not a great memory.

La Huerta Motel...

David K - 10-3-2016 at 04:12 PM

In my trip report, you will also see photos of us eating breakfast at Victor's in the town plaza.

We have had lunch and dinner at Rice and Beans and always good... their motel was less than perfect, however.

Whale season is mostly Dec-Mar. or Apr.

weebray - 10-3-2016 at 05:26 PM

I have to throw cold water on the party but La Huerta is not a great place to stay. The beds are dreadful and the prices just keep creeping up. It's ok but not a lot better than Motel Fong which is the lowest rung on the ladder in San Ignacio. As far as eats go I would also avoid Victors for anything but a simple breakfast. Above all avoid the fish. We just ate there for the third time this year and the normally so so fish was really awful and burnt. The cook has not a clue. You would think I would learn. I wish we could make a recommendation for something in San Ignacio but we're still looking.

David K - 10-3-2016 at 05:38 PM

How interesting, both times I stayed there, a year apart, were inexpensive (under $35), and bed was comfortable. Pat also had a good night's rest last month.

Only had breakfast at Victor's. Last year, fish dinner at Rice & Beans was very good. Previous fish dinners there were also good.

Quesadillas or quesatacos across the highway from the Pemex were great, by the way.

BajaBlanca - 10-3-2016 at 07:14 PM

Wow...amazing that you had such a bad bed etc. at la huerta. My niece and a bunch of her friends stayed there and loved it...go figure.

I have had some nice meals at Victor's, but I don't order fish since they aren't on the coast. I am real picky about fresh fish. I order burritos or quesadillas - simple stuff not likely to be messed up!

If you are going whale watching, perhaps stay out there?

bill erhardt - 10-3-2016 at 07:32 PM

I'm with Blanca on la huerta. I stayed there earlier this year after recommendations from friends in Loreto and enjoyed it. Don't remember the cost, but it was reasonable and the rooms, including the beds, were comfortable. I will stay there again if ever in need of overnight accommodations in San Ignacio.

liknbaja127 - 10-3-2016 at 07:46 PM

I am also with Blanca and David, We were there in November, clean rooms, good price. Also had a good meal at Victors! will be staying there again this year. But next week it will be San Felipe:bounce:

Ateo - 10-3-2016 at 08:05 PM

There's no debate - La Huerta.

Last month and last year the bed and AC functioned perfectly.

Good wifi.

Cheap. Like $38/night

TV/Satellite.

Best hotel I've stayed in San Ignacio.

It's like the Jardines of Baja Sur.

With a mini zoo.

And a mercado with two beautiful women as cashier.

And a restaurant going in by January.

rts551 - 10-3-2016 at 08:11 PM

Victor has always been good to us....ever since he was the cook at Campo Rene.

BajaBill74 - 10-3-2016 at 08:11 PM

Do they have wi-fi?

YES. And free cafe en la maņana.

Udo - 10-3-2016 at 08:31 PM

What is wrong with the YURTS at Ignacio Inn B&B?

Even without a reservation, they have been very accommodating. How can you beat the romantic environment of sleeping in a yurt right next to the San Ignacio river?

Absolutely a good choice - the Yurts.

mtgoat666 - 10-3-2016 at 09:15 PM

SI is a pretty town. Truly a shame to see ugly hotels like Huerta popping up. A row of concrete boxes, fronting a barren unlandscaped front. Ugh.

Goat, for you I recommend the yurts... they come with 'wildlife experience'!

weebray - 10-4-2016 at 07:14 AM

OK, I knew there would be some push back on this one. Huerta IS clean but the beds are inexpensive cardboard planks with cheap sheets that barely cover the bed. We paid 650 pesos which is reasonable but they have added a 100 p charge for the doggie. Anyway it's clean but not very comfortable. As for Victors we had tostadas de pollo and jurel empanizado. The fish was way overcooked and of questionable freshness. My bad for ordering it. The tostadas consisted of a vapid pile of limp chicken with some iceberg and the usual tasteless tomatoes. We're still looking for a good place to say in San Ignacio. That's my story and I'm sticking to it.

mulegemichael - 10-4-2016 at 07:58 AM

san ignacio b and b, (or "the yurts"), is a great place to stay for comfort AND food...breakfast is included in the price and is fabulous!!!...also their daughter has a little restaurant in town called Tootsies that also has wonderful food....just can't beat these places here.

My photos from 2009 when we stayed there...

OTHER YURTS:

The river at Ignacio Springs Bed & Breakfast:

Udo - 10-4-2016 at 11:11 AM

The yurts next to the river are soooo cool!

You get to watch a sunset behind the palms next to the river while drinking a margarita or a beer.

shari - 10-4-2016 at 12:15 PM

Ignacio Springs is beautiful with a fantastic breakfast but if you just want somewhere to sleep the night and are on a budget, La Huerta is fine but extremely thin walls so brig ear plugs. I love the store right there and it has no traffic noise.

The best scallops I have ever had was at Victors so I guess it depends who is cooking and if the seafood is fresh.

I am not at all fussy but my one stay at Rice & Beans was awful...never again...not clean, crappy beds and bedding, not great service, no wifi in the rooms, noisy as all get out and overpriced.

TLBaja79 - 10-4-2016 at 03:59 PM

Well good to hear all of that. We have only driven through, never stayed in San Ignacio for days. The last time we arrived to all hotels booked and stayed on the highway at Baja Oasis and it was just fine, clean with secure parking, surprisingly the road traffic wasn't bad. We'd much rather find a better spot but it was good enough.

As far as restaurants: Tootsies was great but $$$. I have eaten lunch at a place with brick arches, on the way out of town to the salt flats. Not sure the name 'Los Arcos???' This place has been great, not fast service but plenty good. Thats the only place I know of that I like in town.

May try La Huerta or the Desert Inn. We are always looking for clean/safe first then price and other amenities next...

Udo - 10-4-2016 at 04:06 PM

RICE & BEANS is too close to Mexico 1. Makes it hard to sleep.

mulegemichael - 10-4-2016 at 06:57 PM

udo....and the rock hard beds dont help....and one morning i woke up there to hit the road and dumped a couple dozen crickets out of my shoes...inside the room...!!!!....that's what i get for wearing SHOES...

Stayed at the yurts one time, very nice and friendly. However it was in January with a wind blowing and the room was"leaky"and pretty cold. Otherwise very nice.

Makhaon - 10-5-2016 at 05:19 AM

Unless you are on a really tight budget, the Ignacio Springs B&B is a great place to stay. It is about a mile from the town square. The hospitality and breakfast are great.

Whale-ista - 10-5-2016 at 07:34 PM

thanks for the yurt photos! I've been there to deliver items for friends, en route to lagoon, but haven't stayed so it's good to see the interiors.

Will agree with what others have said about La Huerta. It was a great option when my group stayed there last year. Clean, modern, great water pressure & quality. 24 hour guard for the vehicles. Easy walk to town. WiFi in the office (that may have improved) and they allow pets (no charge last year, again may have changed.)

I admit I carry my own pillow and sleeping sack and (in winter) sleeping bag that I use when staying in most Baja hotels, so can't address quality of La Huerta's bedding. I do this since my dog insists on sleeping on the bed with me, so I cover the bed with a lightweight fleece cover so there's no concerns over having a dog on the bedspread/sheets.

(I admit- in some places I've stayed, a well behaved poodle could be the least of the problem!)

So- another vote for La Huerta!

PaulW - 10-6-2016 at 06:38 AM

Long history of visiting SI. Never stayed any place by the Yurts. Comfortable and friendly place to stay.

David K - 10-6-2016 at 08:59 AM

The WiFi now works in all the rooms and even out where the others set up camp by the animal cages. The sheets were fine... I always look after the report made about Motel Cabanas Linda in Cataviņa not washing sheets between guests!

TLBaja79 - 12-3-2016 at 07:49 PM

We just got back and stayed at Desert Inn San Ignacio.
It was great. The room had almost nothing more than 2 beds, a TV and a bathroom. And that was perfect for us. The rooms were clean and nice. We really like the style of the old 'La Pinta' (Presidente) hotels.
No problem with thin walls there.

It was a bit cold but the pool was nice

We'd definitely stay there again

surfinggrandpa71 - 12-4-2016 at 05:10 AM

The yurts at Ignacio Springs are decent, but not what they were years ago. I think the constant annual flooding has taken its toll on the place and the owners. We stayed there a few months ago, it had a moldy smell and the breakfast isn't half as good, or as sanitary,as it used to be. The bathrooms were pretty rough and questionable as well. The owners also seem to be burned out on the whole bed and breakfast idea.
La Huerta seems to be the up and coming spot, after talking to a few folks, will try it next year on our annual Scorpion Bay trip

liknbaja127 - 12-4-2016 at 08:18 AM

We were at the La Huerta last week, good price's and very clean.
they said the restaurant will be open some time in Dec. looks like
it a very nice place also.

BajaBlanca - 12-4-2016 at 01:31 PM

and I completely forgot to mention the newish place with all the artistic animals in the yard. As you leave the square towards La Huerta, it is on the left.

I will hunt for the thread I did on it. I met some folks who had stayed there and they loved it. I met Carolina the owner once and she is a hoot!

Stayed at the Yurts a few weeks ago and it was great in my opinion. Wife got eaten alive somehow while we were sleeping but I was fine.

Did you see any giant c-ckroaches, or rats, in your yurt? :O:lol:

I've heard that the owners are indeed burnt out on their B&B due to both fires and floods. They have been very helpful with whale watching arrangements and other services in the past but I haven't stopped there the last 4 times through town. Victor is a character and very entertaining but the food is really hit and miss the last few times. Tootsie's is such a tourist trap that it's almost embarrassing to be seen there. Overpriced and no locals that I've ever met there, the first time just after opening was kinda fun but not since then. Rice 'n Beans has given me tourista and so I ignore their food and the facilities have been pounded without good maintenance or enhancement. The whole Ecotourista scene is taking a toll on the authenticity San Ignacio used to represent to me. Has anyone seen Oscar at the Posada lately, he's a favorite of mine.

I'm thinking of staying at the yurts. does anyone know where to find prices at? I'm new on here. so, Hola everyone.

Hi there and welcome...
Go to their web site and see otherwise contact them: www.ignaciosprings.com
Back in 2009 the small yurt was about $85 and that includes a Canadian style breakfast, eh!

The opinion of locals is that the prices are too high. Priced for gringos, not locals.

PaulW - 12-15-2016 at 09:16 PM

Tootsie's Not mx food. Every meal I have had there was special. And other diners agreed.
Value is base on the meal. Always full at dinner time - get there early to have a table to yourself.

My dog and I thoroughly enjoyed Ignacio Springs B&B last February. Home made sausages for breakfast!
