We had only been to Plaza Garibaldi once before and during the day. Since then, a very good friend had told us that the time to go was at night.
so, we went. It is wonderful!
It is a wide sidewalk, filled with musicians playing everywhere. Lined with restaurants. Plenty of people (this was on a Saturday night). Not ever
do you feel uncomfortable, which was a huge relief. Mexico City - la Ciudad de Mexico (not called DF anymore in Spanish) had put hundreds of police
patrolling every tourist site as well as the normal streets. If you ask one for a taxi, they take you to these pink and white taxis called TAXI
SEGURO and they tell you the price upfront. The prices are more than reasonable and can not be changed once you accept.
Here is a view down the main sidewalk, we arrived early evening in order to get our bearings:
Pulque, this awful and I repeat awful smelling drink was created by the Aztec Indians and has become the rage in Mexico City. Before, one could only
find it in regions nearby Puebla as far as I could tell. We tried it there - when mixed with any fruit, the smell pretty much disappears and the
taste is delicious. It packs a powerful punch (or I am a wimp because Les doesn't think so LOL). We did not have any but I thought this sign was
interesting:
Our very good friend Pancho who has passed on, once told us to go to Tenampa Restaurant and while we were in a longish line there debating whether to
go elsewhere with no line, the guy in front of us said - I live here and I recommend you wait in line, The other places will have house bands and
will charge you for them in your bill (in other words, surprise!!!!). Here, the food is good, it is 90 years old and the most traditional of all
the mariachi and jarocho band restaurants and YOU choose if you want to pay for live music at your table. He added that there are so many people that
pay for the live music, you will be entertained all night. He was right!
As we were waiting in line, these 2 bands played at the outside tables right next to us:
In the end, it was less than a 30 min wait, the place was packed and music non-stop. The food was not expensive and what we ordered was nothing to
write home about but it was so much fun!
Inside was a mix of lovebirds and big parties of 15 or so celebrating someone's birthday.
Hope you enjoyed the mini sidetrip!

We love Garibaldi; it has really cleaned itself up in the past several years and now is safe; years ago you couldn't go at night. Don't know if you
have an Uber app on your phone but we use it down there all the time and it is a fraction of the cost of a taxi; also safe, clean cars and you have a
record of your driver and car with a license plate. The fare from the airport to Centro Historico in a taxi is around $25; with Uber it is around $7,
just for comparison.
