Jack stands for Coco?

John M - 10-17-2016 at 03:03 PM

With a high probability of receiving a negative comment from Mtgoat666, I'll post a message from Coco. He is in need of two jack stands to support the frame of his car when the axle is removed. When I was there a week ago he offered me cash to buy them but I couldn't tell when we'd return that way, certainly not soon enough to be of much help. He showed me a Harbor Freight ad where he had them circled.

With the 1000 coming soon, perhaps someone would be passing that way that might be of assistance.

Won't cement blocks do the same job? I've seen this work.

They can crumble under the weight with negative consequences for the person working under the car. Quite unsafe.

Harbor Freight carries a few different load capacity jack stands. Do you remember what size he was looking at ? (2 ton, 4 ton, 6ton...12ton)

Not being negative, just providing some "mexineering." What would McGyver do?
It seems there is a lot of junk in the yard, some of it is probably right wt and strength to fun as block.
Mexineering!

Jack stand capacity

John M - 10-17-2016 at 07:09 PM

The specs for a 1984 AMC Eagle show that the vehicle weighs about 3,300 pounds. Supporting the back half I would imagine the minimum with a safety buffer would be a two ton type - but I'm certainly not expert at this sort of thing. I do not recall the weight capacity of the ones he had shown me the advertisement for.

I'm headed north in a week or two and have a couple I can drop off. I'll go throw them into the truck right now or I'll forget by then. I don't know the weight rating but it may be stamped on them. They're old and I use them only to hold up a quad but the 'look' the same as what I use at home on cars.

One still had a readable label and they're 4000 lbs. I didn't see any obvious damage so they should work.

What fee is coco charging you for storing the jack stands at his place?

BajaBlanca - 10-26-2016 at 03:50 AM

love that folks are helping each other out! and I knew someone whose son died under a car that wasn't properly raised so yeah, nix to the cement blocks.

Sure he's thrilled to get free stuff - and then charge you $300 to get your wrecked Jeep back.
