Hwy 5 update and Hotel San Felipe

Maitairoa - 10-23-2016 at 12:37 PM

Has anybody recently traveled Hwy5 southbound from San Felipe to Hwy 1? In what condition is the road and how far is it paved?
Also, can somebody recommend a hotel in San Felipe?
Thanks
Alex

One month ago for me... as far as Coco's Corner, then on to Hwy. 1 on the pre-1983 road via Calamajué. Pavement still ends at the same point it did in 2014, 20 kms. south of the Gonzaga Pemex.

In July, we did go all the way to Laguna Chapala on the current Hwy. 5 route. Just 22-23 unpaved miles, but other than rough for a few miles beyond Coco's, it was easy. Just go slow if you aren't in an SUV.

Thanks for the update. Looks like pavement goes a lot further now. Last time we drove it, it ended just before the military checkpoint in Gonzaga.

Still looking for a Hotel recommendation in San Felipe.

Thanks

did the route about two weeks ago, stayed at El Capitan in San Felipe. basic, clean, about 40-45US, south end of one way street behind the (also one way) malecon street.

On a budget and just for the night Sky Blue Hotel North of town is what a lot of people prefer. Nicer and again preferred by a lot of people is Kiki's... which is on the East end of the Bay.

Guess I am spatially challenged, Mark...It would be the North end I guess. Lets not make an issue out of it or the maps will come out.

Made the trip about 2 weeks ago, stayed at El Capitan Hotel in SF. Current price is 36 bucks or 630 Pesos plus the usual deposit for remote (70 Pesos). Hotel no longer has a restaurant but there are plenty within walking distance. Simple and clean hotel. Perfect for one night stay. Nothing fancy.

Once pavement ends, road is in pretty rough condition but drivable. We have a Tahoe, so no big issue. Friends followed us in a Ford Ranger pickup, no issues either. Just go slow for the 20+ miles. Took us exactly 3 hours from San Felipe to Hwy. 1 turnoff.

They are working on the road and you can see the progress they are making. Once finished going to be nice alternate drive north.

Pet friendly hotels in San Felipe? Preferably on the water.
