for that repair you don't need a dodge mechanic but

a Differential and Axle Shop

there's lots of them in san diego

if you go to a regular mechanic shop they will probably take the axel out and send it to a "specialist" like these

if you don't do it right the first time...it will never be right

it's expensive be prepared...ask for an estimate for sure

That sucks, but yes, you don't need any special mechanic to fix that. In PB I always recommend Beeline. They are reputable shop.

It will actually be more expensive for the part. You can most likely find the axle shaft (inner axle) from a wrecked truck down in Otay. The shop may try to put a new one in, but that happening again is very unlikely. Do you pull a lot of weight?

That actually happened to me in Baja on the highway. Tire and wheel assembly rolled down the road for a good mile. I was chasing after it for like 15 minutes. Not fun. Family saw the whole thing, towed me into their front yard, cooked me some tacos and gave me a beer to settle me down. I ended up bussing home (it was Easter Sunday) and returning a week later and fixed it in the dirt.

It's not hard to replace the axle shaft although you will need some additional parts like seals and bearings. Maybe some brake parts also from when the wheel came off and the backing plate hit the ground. Rockauto shows it to be a bit over $100 for the shaft.

Or if you can find a low mileage complete axle from an auto recycler (junk yard) for a few hundred dollars that is a couple hours to swap out (if you know what you're doing). Just be sure to check for the same gear/ring and pinon ratio on the new axle.
