While out with friends new to Baja, we were so amazed to see a flock of 6 Cackling Geese land at La Ribera lagoons today. They seemed to be
exhausted and very thirsty. I reported the sighting to eBird and it was flagged as "rare"bird for Baja Sur.
I took some shots from a distance and left the geese alone to rest up.fandango - 11-7-2016 at 09:59 PM

Where are they from?bajagrouper - 11-8-2016 at 08:31 AM
Hint: They are called Canadian Honkers for the noise the flock makes....pacificobob - 11-8-2016 at 08:46 AM

i believe it is called canada goose. (branta canadensis)AKgringo - 11-8-2016 at 08:56 AM
That profile looks familiar, I think I saw that guy in Anchorage a couple of weeks ago!
Seriously though, there were flocks of 'lesser Canadian's' in formation heading south in mid October. They are smaller than the Honkers, and are
pretty widely distributed throughout Alaska, all the way up to Prudhoe Bay even.
That one could have been from a population that fattens up on eel grass in Izembeck Lagoon in western Alaska, then migrates to the marshes from El
Centro down through Sonora (old info). I hope they find enough food to get where they are supposed to be!
A bit of a hijack, but the black brant makes the same migration....non stop!BigOly - 11-8-2016 at 10:53 AM
This is the "Aleutian" subspecies of Cackling Goose that has a migration range that ends just south of San Francisco. Very exciting to see them here.
I saw them again today as they were heading northward from the lagoons.vandenberg - 11-8-2016 at 12:58 PM
Oly,
seen them here at the lagoons on the golf course in Nopolo/Loreto, in the water or grazing the fairways. AKgringo - 11-8-2016 at 01:03 PM
I am currently in Grass Valley CA, and they are pretty much here year round. If there are enough green golf courses, pasture land, and athletic
fields, they don't need to migrate!BajaBlanca - 11-8-2016 at 03:53 PM
