A Nomad (who is not posting anymore) emailed this trip report to share...
Just got back from picking up a car in San Diego, and although I don't post Nomads anymore, just thought I would update the Fount on what we
found on the trip back.
First day San Diego to San Felipe via Calexico. Easy day, roads great - stayed at Hotel Costa Azul - a place to avoid totally - no hot water (they
lied), $50USD/night (a joke, rooms were dirty, curtains in tatters), but it was on the beach.
Next day late start (fuel pump) to BLA. New road to Gonzaga like a little bit of paradise - last 25km less so, but no complaints. Arrived after dark
and stayed at Villa Vitta (excellent $850mn/night, water hot, chef Mario friendly and great cook).
Next day to Punta San Francisquito (following a recent thread on Nomads). Lovely beach, but what a tragic place - in a dirty shambles with no water of
any kind (let alone hot), no cook, no food. It did have cold beer ($2USD) and wifi (!). Carlos Slim now owns that whole coast, and it seems he could
care less about BSFCO.
We went up the hill and down the other side to Puerto San Francisquito (aka Caleta SFCO) and an old friend Alberto Lucero, who owns the place. Wind
was howling but the other renters friendly and had a memorable Thanksgiving With Jeff and Karen of the well-known transmission shop MIT in El Cajon.
(no cell service, but email betolucero2003@yahoo.com.mx for reservations and info). He has small and larger houses for rent. Highly recommended.
Gonzaga Bay to Hwy 1 road conditions

Things are always changing, so I'd really appreciate some up to date opinions on the sections from GB to Coco's corner and then onto Hwy 1. It sounds
like the first section is fine but iffy, on the last 23 or so miles from Coca's on to hwy 1. I'd be pulling a 34' Presidential travel trailer with a 1
ton 4-wd p/u. And no, I don't have anything against my unit as was suggested last year when I ask these questions. I'd have no problem traveling this
last section very slowly but I don't want to do any damage. Also is there diesel fuel available at GB. Fire away folks and tell me where I'm going
wrong. David K - 12-1-2016 at 11:34 AM
The few miles immediately past Coco's Corner (which is 10 miles past end of pavement) are very rough for trailering over... about 4 miles until you
have rejoined the new highway construction. So, of the 23 unpaved miles, about 4 are going to be very slow with a big trailer. Others with trailers
are doing it, and no tears reported here.TMW - 12-1-2016 at 02:49 PM
Was on the road a couple of weeks ago, both ways and it is as other say. it's a graded road with a few rough spots. People pulling trailers are on it
also in various size cars, SUVs and trucks. Lots of big tractor trailers on it going slow. rts551 - 12-1-2016 at 02:52 PM
I just went over it last week (no old reports here). About the same as last year with a few more graded areas. I did notice that with the increased
traffic the new road bed portions are becoming washboard quickly. Some new parts have been blocked off to keep people off of it. I keep wondering
when I am going to see the asphalt batch plant go in as there are quiet a few miles ready (or about ready) to pave. elfbrewery - 12-2-2016 at 11:08 AM
David, I know the report says November, but how recently was your friend at San Francisquito?David K - 12-2-2016 at 01:07 PM
His email said he "just got back", and dated it Nov. 27, 2016.
He emailed me last week... it just took me awhile to post it. He still reads Nomad, but doesn't care to post anymore (perhaps because of too many
'maroons', as one other Nomad says)!

"Carlos Slim now owns that whole coast, and it seems he could care less about BSFCO."
I'm curious, what's BSFCO? bezzell - 12-2-2016 at 02:46 PM
must be an author! ( with the desperate audacity to correct spelling of Mex cities!
)
Must be! We like being corrected and it is better to have the facts and be understood. Rather it was auto corrected to 'another' or I just goofed, it
is now fixed. Thank you very much! (Oh, just Baja place names, not all Mexican cities, since this is a Baja forum, and I don't really have a lot of
historical literature on the mainland to correct wrong spelling over there. Of course, they do have a state called Guerrero... would you be okay to
let your friends spell it Guerro all the time?David K - 12-2-2016 at 03:35 PM
