TOM (TMW) and ROY (The squarecircle) December Trip Live, Daily Spot

David K - 12-9-2016 at 04:03 PM

Tom called me yesterday on his way south to meet up with Roy to give me his trip plan and say I could share the locations from his Spot signals so all our Baja Nomad amigos could follow their progress. As usual, they are Nomad Santa Clauses bringing nice things south and doing some exploring, too.

Good to hear that they are being spotted! He stopped by my mom's house which means he is headed this way too - safe travels.

Do you have lat/lon for his locations? I'd like to zoom in on a sat view to see what's going on (the paper version doesn't give me enough information).

David K - 12-9-2016 at 05:19 PM

Well, he did say it was okay to post live, but I really didn't intend to show that close up in case any banditos are monitoring, lol!

I have been removing the box on the map that gives the GPS, except (as you can see) on the first map.

David K - 12-9-2016 at 05:37 PM

I am not sure how many are interested in seeing how they travel down Baja, nor can I do this every day so soon after I get the notification.

Tomorrow, Baja Angel and I celebrate 12 years since we met!

Here's TW's last Spot for Friday, Dec. 9, 2016...

For sure!
I admire him for having the freedom to go as often as he does... and his wife, Shirley, being so cool about it.

I just edited my previous post to include TW's final Spot for the day, about 7 pm.

How many "set's" of tires ya think he goes through in a year :):)

X2 makes me jealous with all the cool trips

BajaBlanca - 12-10-2016 at 07:34 AM

He is becoming a legend! What a guy.

TMW - 12-10-2016 at 08:51 AM

Hi everyone, we stayed in the El Capitan hotel and had a great steak dinner at El Ninos last night. Roy is having some issues with some caution lights coming on. They all appear to be associated with his stability control and not with his cooling system which is good.

We are headed to Cocos, then Ponchos, then the NWT if Roy's Land Rover is OK other wise it is to Blancas from El Barril. It's been fun so far even with Roy's car issues.

David K - 12-10-2016 at 10:26 AM

Thanks for writing Tom!
I heard that the stupid Land Rover was acting up again... It was so cool when it was new and went to Mission Santa María with ease, in 2007.
However, either all the tough Baja trips or just the poor quality of Rover vehicles has sure made it a horrible experience for Roy the past few trips!

TW and Roy left Coco's Corner at 2:27pm and arrived at Hwy. 1 in 30 minutes at 2:57 (just a few minutes ago)... That's 26 mph avg. for a Tacoma and an LR-3.

A new signal at 3:59pm, same region.

Here they were at 3:59pm Sunday... just SW of Cabo San Miguel on the No Wimps Trail, in Arroyo Santa Barbara:

The middle views are of Rancho San Miguel (now abandoned?), and the latter one is at the Ejido with the fancy building (long abandoned) and probably neither was damaged by any floods. Lots to see of interest in that area, and maybe just poking along because of it?!?!?!?

Not sure... they know about the abandoned ejido. It was just north of their position.

I just added an 11:35 signal that shows them going back west.
Roy loves Los Corrales, so there must be a reason they at least don't go there to camp tonight?

They got back on track... at 12:52pm, south of Los Corrales (Punta San Juan Bautista)...

Not that it matters, but I don't think that the signal is at Pancho's camp. I followed a semi-dry wash out to the beach once, and could see his camp a mile or so to the south.

I'll bet that they did the same thing...or I could just be wrong!

I agree with you, David---their position does seem to be slightly south of the Ejido. I am thinking that "Los Corrales" is pretty far south from Rancho San Miguel, but I never actually made it down that far south. The position of Los Corrales on the Baja Atlas seems further south than your posted aerial photo above?!?!? It would be a shame if they missed poking around at the Ejido as it is so interesting to see what the Mexican's did there long ago, and the ag projects and systems. Perhaps they saw it all on a previous trip?

On Edit: I agree with AKgringo's last post, and know of the dry wash he speaks of, and camped in it once beside the SOC, and yes it is further north than Ponchos as I understand it.

The red arrow is there location this morning on the trail. El Gato is the blue arrow. Hwy. 1 is off this map to the left...

On the 2009 Baja Almanac... The same arrows for their location now and El Gato. At the bottom is Hwy. 1, San Ignacio and a circle where they will reach Hwy. 1...

They are probably in the area of 8 miles east of El Gato - in a challenging Trinidad Wash - then pretty good road for the 40+miles to Highway 1, then another dozen miles west into San Ignacio - and room/showers!

PaulW - 12-13-2016 at 03:24 PM

My guess is El Gato 27 49.23748', -112 52.07178'
But hard to know for sure all we found was a corral
Yes, the hardest place in the arroyo was around 2 miles east of El Gato where we had to strap one vehicle out of the sand . Such it was in 2009.

The area last week from another trip in the same arroyo where the big S turns are seen on GE was a slow place, but no stopping was noted. Closer to Trinidad.

Congratulation Tom and Roy for getting through the Trinidad Canyon and out to El Gato!

PaulW - 12-13-2016 at 05:53 PM

That is a very long time to get from Camp on the coast even with the side trip south. All day to get 10 or 11 miles along the trail to El Gato.
I hope they have no mechanical issues.

Slow day

John M - 12-13-2016 at 06:27 PM

Hi Paul - the latest spot from Tom was "all ok" at El Gato - they've made it through Trinidad Wash. Tom drove north from Highway 1 almost to El Gato earlier this year (I believe) and related to me that the tough stuff is north of that. I'd expect them to make San Ignacio this evening - 7:00 p.m. maybe? Of course the very slow driving has taken a toll on their gas tanks.....Tom had two 5 gallon cans and I'm not sure about Roy. Actually since Roy was having trouble early in the trip, we are assuming they are still together and that Roy did not return to San Diego at some point. Nonetheless, as you know, the toughest is behind them terrain wise.

Edited to correct my errorneous guess. The last spot at about 7:00 p.m. still has them 20 miles north of Highway 1 - stopped for the night? dinner maybe? Guess we'll find out later.

What a fantastic adventure. Many thanks, David for the excellent coverage. I am amazed at their rapid progress thru this really rugged beautiful countryside.

TMW - 12-14-2016 at 08:28 AM

Wow wow wow we made it. Tough going in many areas. Roy did not have any issues with the Land Rover except getting stuck 3 or 4 times and of course the Tacoma was there to help.

We went to Rancho San Miguel and the building is standing but lots of stuff scattered around. There was a bicycle rider camped there, his tent was up, but we didn't see him just his tracks.

We made the mistake Rich did and followed his tracks and had to turn around. Many washout on the small arroys. It was sometimes hard to follow the tracks.

I had downloaded Rich's GPS into my NUVI-52 thinking it would show the trail. Well it didn't I have to do something else to make it work. Garmin basecamp says it is loaded, who knows. I have E32 loaded and it shows the old road and we used it as a reference. We lost sight of the trail many times. The hardest was from the SOC at Trinidad to El Gato. Lots of rocks and hard to see tracks so we had to walk ahead to find them. One of the hardest sections was north of Los Corrales where we had to go down onto the beach rocks and then back up over. I had two 5 gallon cans of extra gas and we filled up in LA Bay. When we got to San Ignacio I had about 1/8 of a tank left. Roy said his Land Rover took 90+ liters to fill.

The days were warm and clear and the nights were cold except for the last night camping it was cool. From El Gato south The road was in good shape.

Other than not knowing where we were sometimes the NWT was fun and certainly interesting. If I had more gas I would liked to explore the R San Miguel area.

PaulW - 12-14-2016 at 08:54 AM

Around 9mpg for Roy. Not to bad Probably even better with real miles traveled.
Tom, the gps issue is not because of Rich's track. It is a good track and overlays very closely with more recent tracks I have.
The guy that drove the track the week before you was traveling a very old land cruiser. Surprised you did not see his tracks? He did it with two fivers as backup. Solo drive and never got stuck.

David K - 12-14-2016 at 09:20 AM

Great to see your post Tom... I saw you stayed at the nice place, too... Good WiFi now reaches all the rooms.
Have fun going to Blanca's and I will keep up the locating if you wish. u2u or email any instructions for me.

Barry A. - 12-14-2016 at 10:15 AM

Paul refers to "-----2 fivers as backup------" in the above post. What is a "fiver" ?

"fiver"?

John M - 12-14-2016 at 11:01 AM

Likely a five gallon gas can

shari - 12-14-2016 at 06:49 PM

and stories we heard!!!!! Pretty cool to hear a trip report first hand from a couple of non wimps! But my favorite moment was seeing with my own eyes Roy scratch a fly's butt....truly a first for me and he did it a few times and I was even able to take a picture of it...really...the fly was alive...Roy is a fly whisperer ....er scratcher.

and Ged was good for his word on the margs too...great to see you both again after all these years!

This is the first Spot signal I got since they arrived at San Ignacio after the No Wimps Run.

Looking forward to the photos and details!

We mostly followed the Land Cruiser using his tire prints as a reference. There were other 4x4 tracks and 3 or 4 motorcycle tracks. The problem was over the rocks it was hard at times to see any sign of tracks so we would walk ahead to pick them back up, often when they hit a sanding patch.

I used Garmin BaseCamp to load Rich's GPS track and thought it would just work and show me the GPS track, that is how the E32 program works, but it didn't work. I'll figure it out.

We're planning another NWT run for April and I should be better prepared with my GPS.

David K - 12-16-2016 at 11:30 AM

Tom, maybe ask John M what he uses as his GPS track of race course is how he helped Ken Cooke and the rest of us find our way through that ejido east of Guadalupe Canyon entrance at last year's Pole Line Run.

TMW - 12-16-2016 at 11:44 AM

It was great to see Blanca and Les, Sheri and Juan, and have some great margaritas with motoged. We had breakfast in San Ignacio and when we got to La Bocana Blanca had made lunch for us and Les made us set down and eat (1.5 hours after breakfast) well it was so good I had seconds. I'll probably never lose weight this way. When we got to Shari's she offered to make us something to eat but we kindly declined and opted for ged's margaritas.

We left Bahia Asuncion and filled up in Vizcaino. North of there we hit fog until a few miles north of the state line. Slow going for a while. We pulled into Cocos about 10pm. I was up at 6am and yelled at Roy at 6:30am to get up and get ready to leave. We had coffee with Coco and was on the road at 7:30. up to Gonzaga then to San Felipe. North bound I talked Roy into crossing at the Mexicali east gate. It took us 50-60 min. I went north on 86 to the 10 then the 210 to the 15. All lanes on the 15 were going about walking speed for several miles it seemed. Off on the 138 to Palmdale then up to Mojave. Hwy 58 was closed due to an accident on the north side of Tehachapi so I had to take the Tehachapi Loop road to Keene then back on the 58 and home. I got home at 10:30pm 15 hours on the road. I will not do that again.

TMW - 12-16-2016 at 11:48 AM

I'm going to check my basecamp stuff to see if I left out a step.

BajaBlanca - 12-16-2016 at 01:20 PM

We have had internet issues but YES, we saw the boys too! The stories are amazing! What an incredible life these two have had.

Les had cooked their lunch for them - since we didn't know which day they were coming, we kept making extra food every day for about three days. If they thought they could leave without eating, well, that just wasn't possible:

This is us outside, just as they were about to leave:

Tom brought me a huge suitcase of clothes that had been sitting in mom's garage for a month. I took it over to the middle school where they are raising money for various projects.

Here are two boys trying on a pair of pjs and a head warmer:

Thanks Tom and thanks Roy - for the clothes. for the dreams. for the laughter.

John M - 12-16-2016 at 09:37 PM

I use a Lowrance GPS - the track we followed was provided me by Paul W.

John

PaulW - 12-17-2016 at 07:05 AM

Yes, I have a huge number of real tracks that I have driven. Mostly from L Salida south to Matomi. But I have numerous tracks for all of Baja.
I primarily use various Lowrance GPS's, but I also do tracks on my Garmin Montana 650t. The Lowrance is much easier and is compatible with most of the stuff we share. I like John, Stuck, and other experienced people can convert back and forth with ease for all kinds of formats.
Get a GPS that can share tracks and then we can share them.
I think it is sad that with all the back country travel that you Nomads do and do not have tracks to share. Nuvi GPS's are not acceptable for this purpose. Sorry.

I have found GPS Babel to work well. https://www.gpsbabel.org

Babel

MJS - I used Babel for some time until Paul told me about the GPS TrackMaker - it's works much more easily than Babel in my opinion.

You can convert just about any file to GE or GPX using gps visualizer at
http://www.gpsvisualizer.com/

That is how I converted Rich's GPS to Google Earth.

For Baja Off Road routes on my NUVI-52 I use CartoGrafia E32loading it using Garmin BaseCamp.

I found the problem of why Rich's GPS track didn't work on my NUVI, there was another step. I did not use "edit" and "send to" in BaseCamp.

I won't really know if it works until my next NWT run next year. But now my GPS show the two file in internal storage.
PUNTA SALINA 2 SAN FRANSITO and ST IGN 2 ENS/TNI BEACH

I think before I had just loaded them into BaseCamp and had not sent them to the GPS device.

Where are the photos from the trip?

As John said I have been using Trackmaker for many years. And yes I have used Babel, GPS viaualizer, and Ozi Explorer.
The main reason I use TM is it is easy to add WPs and to edit those side trips that are not applicable.
Back when I was making race tracks for SCORE/NORRA it was very common to go out an drive and try many ways for the course. Then I would go back home and use TM to do the editing. Very easy and quick.
TM will not convert to the latest Lowrance Gen 3 format and so far I have not found any SW that will. I think the people doing that task have bought a license? As you may have noticed SCORE does offer the Gen 3 tracks for their races.
My latest project is to use TM and GE Pro to measure distances between common places where I drive. The result is exact GPS mileages between places on the track. Easy to do, but it does take some time jumping back and forth between the two. On vacation in Colorado so time is what I have these days.

TMW, glad to hear you made it thru with no problems, when your get the
tracks straightened out, you will find that the last day we came out is the
set of tracks that are the best to follow, that was my third pass thru there
because of the trip I did solo to San Ignacio and back with the gas for the
three other vehicles, I was scouting it out for a bike trip in March, but gas
was the biggest issue and thought it would be pretty tough to make it in one day on a bike from San Fransquito to San Ignacio, each time thru we
would find a little more of the original trail.

You are right Rich the bikers need to carry gas since it is 107 miles from Rancho La Ilusion gate to Hwy 1, then another 13 miles to San Ignacio. Maybe less due to the cut off for the Rancho jct. Even with a 4 gallon tank on a four stroke it may be hard to make due to all the sand one would travel thru. It is a kick in the butt ride for a bike. If you can fill them at El Barril or San Francisquito and also have a gas pit at El Gato would be great. Many bikes have made it by carrying gas with them.

I think I have my GPS issues straightened out just waiting for the right time to test it.

TMW, did you try the track from San Fransquito to El Barril along the Beach?

No it wasn't loaded into my GPS. I thought I had loaded it but I did not send it as required on BaseCamp. I have since done so. I used Google Earth with your track overlaying an original track I got from Nomad Fernweh from a couple of years ago and I put the GPS coordinates on it to show the difference. It worked out well for us as we pretty much knew where we were. I had Kasey Smith's GPS guide with way points and mileage etc. I also had my trip notes from the two times I had been on the trail.
