Have driven past San Matias on Hwy 3 over the years and wondered about what was there. Was lucky enough to rent a little casa there during this years
Baja 1K and still puzzled about why there is a village there. There is a microwave tower, a factory processing cactus, store, and a couple of
cantinas. The people and numerous free roaming dogs all seemed friendly.

The town there sprang up mostly after the road was paved, about 1977.
The pass is historic as the only easy passage to the desert as well as being the division between the Sierra Juarez and the Sierra San Pedro Martir.

Several people from San Felipe have summer homes up there. Much cooler there in summer. Nice quiet little town.

The burritos at the loncheria are good.
The village must have been planned, streets form a perfect grid. One of the local gringos said it was originally a Mexican version of an 'Indian
reservation' which resulted in some tax advantages for residents.
