tractor

Has anyone ever brought a compact tractor across the border? We purchased a lot that needs a lot of tractor work and I do have the tractor and would like to clean it up myself. Would bring it back to the US in about 3 weeks or so. Also can you rent a compact tractor/backhoe in LaPaz?

You'll have to import it. That won't be fun.
I'm betting everything is available in la Paz, with an operator attached of course.

Getting someone to do it for you will be cheaper and less headaches than importing to Mexico and trying to return it to the US

You can hire a backhoe with an operator for around 500 pesos an hour. Not worth bringing a tractor.

I was afraid of that. I really wanted to do it myself. Thanks for the advice.

i imported my tractor...easy
you will need a broker...figure 20% of appraised value

plan on justifying the value

bringing it back is easy too...I brought mine back once for repairs
now I do the repairs here

you do need to get permission to take it back from aduana if you want to bring it back without importing it again
they give you a permission letter

I used my tractor today

Just stand around, lean on a shovel and imagine yourself as a Cal-Trans engineer

Said the donut-eating cop

P.s. I think caltrans' built highway system is pretty amazing accomplishment. I think caltrans engineers have done a fine job!

Paying 20% of my $30,000.00 tractors value for only a couple of weeks of work would be crazy. Has anyone seen a tractor rental yard in LaPaz or Cabo? If not I guess i will just have to hire it done.

You should be able to rent one at Matco in La Paz. It's on Garzas - not totally sure of the cross streets, but I think it's between Colosio and Colima.

Look on the bright side; not only are you saving fuel costs hauling the thing up and down the peninsula, let alone the impuesta... but you're also giving a local a J - O - B and helping him feed his family. Feed your local economy... what goes around comes around.

Yeah. Makes little sense. Just job it out. Get recommendations from your neighbors and sit back with a sack of Pacifico and enjoy the show.

All of my life I have done essentially everything myself from changing my oil to carpentry to whatever. Now, down here, I cannot justify picking up a hammer. Probably I will make an exception in the case of electrical work. I dunno why people are all cranked up about terrorists. They have already been here and wired my house!

The workers are reliable and cheap and know how to deal with local material availabilities.

Also, as noted, things are unusually tight here recently and putting food in the mouth a locals is a good thing to do.
