The writer is underestimating the influence of gringos spending dollars (well, maybe not surfers quite as much; they can be a, well, frugal lot) in remote places and how much the local Mexican depend on that.

Seriously, if gringo surfers with dollars (even converted to pesos) arent going to go to remote areas like the Seven Sisters, who is?

I think reality will set in, once the hysteria settles down. With as high as Mexico's poverty level is, imagine what it will be like if they discourage gringos?

All one has to do is look at the effect closing the border had on the economy of Baja & Mexico after 9-1-1. The money spent by tourists from NOB and the money spent by full or part time American residents is quite a chunk of change

You should have seen it down here during Nixon's "Operation Intercept." Baja was a ghost town. Store owners just stood in front of their businesses with stunned looks on their faces.
Not a pretty sight.

Ah yes, Operation Intercept, fall of 1969! I remember it NOT at all...as a college freshman all we talked about was girls and Vietnam.

I found this that shows an erie similarity to today:

Dennis...i was camped in a driftwood shelter out on the sand spit at punta banda during those times...for around a year or so...we were turned back at the border when a "snitch" caught my buddy wearing a wig to cover up his long hair...i just took out my pocketknife and cut it off....fun times!

Hey Dennis 60's and early 70's. Lived on the bay when it was reasonable. Like to have the money back that we spent at Woodys, Blackies, Dillmans and the runs to the bull fights. What a period of time, wow we were lucky to be in so cal.

Back then, a pony tail at the border and beyond was a big problem.
Operation Intercept and the El Nino that flooded TJ in 1969 was my first experience with Baja.
Times have changed to say the least

My spots were Stag and Mutt Lynch. Sometimes Beachball or Blackies. I lived upstairs above Blackies for a few years. It was fun but a bit wierd. But drinks we're cheaper!
And isn't there already a wall of sorts between San Diego and TJ? And I believe it works very well.
