Tell us what you heard

KaceyJ - 3-24-2017 at 09:42 AM

I was last there this past fall and there was a burglary at that time.
The goods were found in a truck that got stuck on the back road to San Bruno
I have heard that this has been going on for some time now
and as late as several more break-ins this past week.
I'm obviously not there and have only second hand/ hearsay info
Thus the inquire

David K - 3-24-2017 at 09:46 AM

I was there (at Russ' place) last month... no mention of any bad stuff that I recall.

BigBearRider - 3-24-2017 at 10:24 AM

There were a couple of break-ins reported. The Homeowners Association has taken a number of steps in response. The most
obvious one is that Neighborhood Watch signs have been posted in English and Spanish.

Russ - 3-24-2017 at 11:31 AM

We are extremely worried and on alert status. Actually the whole community is really peeed off and ready for war. The last 2 weeks there have been many homes broken into. There is a meeting today with our leaders for the neighborhood watch with 3 of the town police chiefs and maybe a fed rep too. Lots of discussions, rumors and threats of violence here recently. Folks that have been robbed have been notified. The items taken are, in the most part, things that can be resold quickly. However there have been times when vehicles and larger items are taken.

willardguy - 3-24-2017 at 11:36 AM

:(...its everywhere!

chuckie - 3-24-2017 at 11:54 AM

It's awful to hear things like this. For so many years I didn't even lock my house, but times have changed....

David K - 3-24-2017 at 12:13 PM

So sorry Russ, and when life just was not getting any easier, as well!!

bajabuddha - 3-24-2017 at 12:47 PM

The more the economy tanks and prices go up and not wages, the more desperate impoverished people become. Ergo, the more the 'haves' will be targets for the 'have-nots'. I don't see it getting any better any time soon either.

BajaBlanca - 3-24-2017 at 01:21 PM

our little village lives with constant fear of nightmare Franco

we are actually taking a breather since he is back in prison

Russ - 3-24-2017 at 04:27 PM

I have just learned that we will have one of the local police depts. patrolling every night now. Also the agencies involved are getting more info on how best to serve our area and will be having an open meeting shortly. 911 will bring out the local Palo Verde police and 113 will contact Santa Rosalia police. Many of us believe that many of these break-ins are drug (tweekers) related because of the items stolen.

Patrol

jkruk - 3-25-2017 at 06:55 AM

Pala verde police came by my home ,furthest one south, twice last night, 9 and3 am .how about you Russ

chuckie - 3-25-2017 at 07:08 AM

I wonder if they will keep that up after almost everyone heads North?

Russ - 3-25-2017 at 08:40 AM

If they did I didn't notice. Nice to know they are in the area. I'm keeping my radio on all night in case I can help. I hope others are too.
Chuckie, We suppose so. We'll know more after the upcoming meeting.

chuckie - 3-25-2017 at 10:57 AM

I sure hope so, Russ...

BajaMama - 3-26-2017 at 08:07 AM

This is so upsetting - I love the PC community and those I know there are always kind to locals. It makes me wonder if drug dealers have found a new market in Santa Rosalia and Mulege? It is heartbreaking to think that people in those and the surrounding communities have succumbed to the addictive qualities of meth and who knows that else. In any case can you all keep an eye on my father-in-law, Charming Charlie? (his casa is right next to fish camp) and make sure he is aware of what is going on? Communicating over the phone and radio is not as easy as it used to be, his hearing is as old as he is...

KaceyJ - 3-26-2017 at 08:46 AM

So now I'm hearing about a fire in someones garage .

How did it start?

Is this related to the break- ins??

Russ - 3-26-2017 at 09:35 AM

BajaMama, Charlie has neighbors that are keeping watch.
KaceyJ, Garage fire ... started by the new type batteries. Local workers discovered it and went into action. Lots of smoke damage but fire was contained to the battery area.
Cops actually pulled in my place last night and shined a light around.

Santiago - 3-26-2017 at 10:46 AM

Off topic a bit; cops are patrolling twice a day through our camp in BOLA. This is new.

willardguy - 3-26-2017 at 10:48 AM

thats great local law enforcement is randomly patrolling the area, but unfortunately when the bad guys see the good guys drive off and know they won't be back for hours...well you get the idea. sad that these days paradise has to be protected with bars, deadbolts, cameras and alarm systems :( but its not going away. invest in professional electronic gear, these days most home owners can install wireless components themselves (with a little programming advice) or have a professional come out for the install.

chuckie - 3-26-2017 at 11:18 AM

What in the world good is that going to do in Baja in the summer? WHO is going to come arunning....???? AND WHERE is this Pofessional installer gonna come from?

No need for a professional installer for wireless camera systems. They are exceedingly simple.

chuckie - 3-26-2017 at 02:42 PM

And how does that stop a home in Baja from being robbed? You guys are living in a dream world....

Russ - 3-26-2017 at 03:20 PM

Lighten-up mr. chuckie and play nice. The idea here is to do something. Most folks have a concern and try to be constructive. You on the other hand, sit in the "MUD" (your signature) and give "MUD".
We are getting two full time guards, not cops but their being here may catch some of these robbers. I think this will be much more productive and being a part of the community it will be nice to have them here. The municipality is covering this and I'm really happy that they are getting involved here. :light: We also now have a neighborhood watch that went into action last night. I'm impressed by their action, fast response and numbers that were involved.

Many have lived in that "dream world" for many years without issues.

There's whatever deterrent factor that comes with a video system. The system alerts the owner immediately of the break-in. It also saves video of the perpetrators so they can be identified and caught. Given the relatively recent occurrence of this issue, there's presumably a limited number of perpetrators.

BajaBlanca - 3-26-2017 at 03:42 PM

a combination of the above is surely the way to go:

cameras so you can catch them in action

paid guards who randomly patrol

neighborhood watch

keeping the police involved

good luck Chivato!

chuckie - 3-26-2017 at 04:28 PM

I am sure glad you all have the problem under control, hope it all works out for you....

bajabuddha - 3-26-2017 at 04:38 PM

In Mulege there was a ''resident thief'' nick-named Koki (last name withheld on purpose) who, when not in jail, would burgle the town blind, Anglo or National, didn't matter. When he'd get temporarily locked up the thieving would cease until his connected family would arrange his release, then it would start all over again, in town and on all the beaches on the bay.

About 5-7 years ago he was out and on a real tear ripping off the community.... there was a big stink raised about it on the internet and in the community. The 'movers and shakers' of the town had their fill of him, and apparently when Koki got arrested on a murder rap the Elders of the town pooled monies together and paid Koki's attorney to KEEP him in prison.... call it reverse mordida, and it worked. They knew it was destroying their economy and running people off. Not saying there is no more crime there, the meth epidemic is Baja-wide now unfortunately.

Point being, the resident Nationals have to get involved in their community too. It's not just an Anglo problem any more. Unlike certain Stateside political factions, we're all in this game together. Same thing happened years back in San Lucas too. A local meth head was known to the community for being the main culprit in a series of burglaries. He was warned, but didn't listen... the addiction was too strong, so as the story goes a couple of local gendarmes 'arrested' him one night but didn't take him to jail; took him out on the desert and whooped him within an inch of his life; he went sober immediately, got a job, quit his life of crime and is now a respected citizen of their community albeit being a little bit ..... slower..... than he used to be.

A camera can help identify the perp, but you need participation to make it stick. Good on Chivato community for organizing and not just demanding whatever. It's obviously a 'Koki' or a small ring of Koki's, and pretty local too as they know the lay of the land.

Happy hunting. ;)

MulegeAL - 3-26-2017 at 05:30 PM

My neighbor here says a van was found stuck in one of the sand washes north road to San Bruno a few days ago. Van had a bunch of Punta Chivato stuff in it. But nobody in the van, van owner not around.

Did you hear that Russ? We just rode through there yesterday, no van. But lots of sand. Hope the cops nail the guy soon.

Russ - 3-26-2017 at 06:07 PM

MulegeAL ~ Nope. I asked around here and no one else heard any thing about the van. My question is how did the person you talk to know the stuff was from Chivato and why, if not reported, wasn't it reported? If you have any more info on the van would you forward it to me? ~ U2U ~ everyone please ask friends and neighbors to report any suspicious activities to the police. Palo Verde police dial 911 (that maybe from a local phone). Others 113 and info will be reported to local police. I realize that getting evolved can be a real hassle so call me 949-732-8081 and I'll see that any info is passed on. Thank you for your report! And everyone else for their concern and ideas.

willardguy, I've ordered some cameras and indoor alarms. Any recommendations on models and brands would be helpful to others and any other ideas where there are no security companies or police set up to respond to break-ins would be appreciated. Hopefully my cameras can be linked to the security guys phones. If so then maybe we can have others do the same and have better coverage in the area.
edit: Is there a way to link all cameras to one site that could be monitored by authorized folks?

[Edited on 3-27-2017 by Russ]

alarms.

watizname - 3-27-2017 at 08:51 AM

just a thought. We have our construction trailers alarmed with a small battery powered alarm that although won't record anything, gives off the loudest screeching ear rupturing sound you've ever heard. They are self contained and have a small solar charger. It is almost impossible to stop without the remote. I can't imagine anyone being able to maintain a coherent thought while these things are going off, except to get away from it. I don't think they are too expensive and are motion sensitive.

Russ - 3-27-2017 at 08:58 AM

Thanks Mike would you take a look and send the brand and model?

BajaMama - 3-27-2017 at 04:44 PM

KacyJ, yes Chuck/aka Charlie lost his Chevy in the flood last year. God bless him, he is 81 and still traveling south twice a year. I try to come down for at least a week or two when he is in PC. The close by neighbors are so sweet, they keep an eye on him. I really appreciate the community in PC!

watizname - 3-27-2017 at 08:13 PM

Will do Russ. I'll be back out at the site later this week and will get the info.

MulegeAL - 3-28-2017 at 08:16 AM

Russ,
Thanks for the info!
Turns out my "when" was off about the van, my apologies.

As a motorbiker on the peninsula, I get to see a lot of turf, tracks and detail in a hurry compared to most 4 wheelers. Should I come upon something that seems out of character in your 'hood I'll let you know!

Russ - 3-28-2017 at 08:35 AM

MulegeAL, Thanks. We had a stolen truck returned from that area sometime before your report. We now have a patrol out that way.

del mar - 3-28-2017 at 10:27 AM

I haven't been out there in years....how many homes are there now, and how many full time residents?

Russ - 3-28-2017 at 10:41 AM

We are a large community now and would like to have more summer residence. Hopefully this year some others will consider spending more time here.

BajaMama - 4-12-2017 at 10:28 AM

Any news regarding the break-ins? Have they found the people responsible?

Pescador - 4-13-2017 at 07:04 AM

They do have two people in custody that they think are related to a couple of the break ins. The really amazing part is that while the big meeting with law enforcement was going on at the Community Center, a home was broken into and they think it happened at the same time the meeting was occurring. That is some kind of new definition of "brazen". The people who live there are working around the clock and people are keeping their Marine Band radios on all night and anything suspicious is immediately checked out. One resident followed a car all the way back to Palo Verde where they were able to make sure the driver was taken into custody. Another resident went into his house after arriving in Punta Chivato and found a person sleeping in his bed. When confronted, the person showed a US Passport even though he was a Serbian person and he grabbed a knife off of the kitchen counter and waved it a few times and then ran out the door into the desert.
The issue of cameras is certainly an intelligent one because after the Law in Mexico changed from a Napoleonic Law which meant you were guilty until proven innocent, to a more modern law like the US, where you are now innocent until proven guilty. So the police force is forced to provide more proof and a camera shot would be a big help for enforcement purposes.

No, Russ, the batteries had nothing to do with the fire, it has been traced to a problem in the charge controller. There are numerous sets of those batteries in Mexico, but the electrical fault seems to have come from the controller.

Russ - 4-13-2017 at 02:34 PM

Here's a photo I took

The shinny blob are what's left of the batteries. The controller was most likely the cause but the batteries certainly burned.
edit: I think that is the controller hanging in the top right corner.
And enhanced photo added

There are about ten homes here now that have updated to the new batteries and all that I have spoken with are aware of the danger of fire due to overcharging.

Russ - 4-13-2017 at 02:58 PM

Jim I'd sure like to know who is giving you your info. I have slightly different versions and participated in one search and monitored and relayed info in all the neighborhood watch responses. There are no bad guys in jail at this time I'm aware of and the one that was taken, the guy with the knife, in was released the following day because of a paper work misunderstanding which was corrected by by the two that confronted him. There is now a warrant out on him. I don't know if he actually showed his passport but he did leave without it.

[Edited on 4-13-2017 by Russ]

Pescador - 4-14-2017 at 06:38 AM

As for the batteries, these are used in the Ford Cars. They are thoroughly tested for overcharging and potential heat. Unless there is a short in the system and then all hell breaks loose. If you get a direct short then they will unload all of that stored energy very quickly. So there was no heat produced by the batteries, but they did unload the energy when the controller shorted out. Ford made several changes to the way these batteries stored and gave off power. So it is unfair to blame the batteries for this fire. When things started sparking it is right that since they are plastic, they will melt and burn, which is exactly what happened. If you take that much stored energy, short it out, then "sparks are gonna fly".

I was at Chivato for the last few days and went to the meeting with the police officers at the Community Center. There was a car pulled over in Palo Verde and an arrest was made. It was different than the initial arrest of the Serbian who was in Violeta and Guy's truck. He was in Don's house and picked up a knife from the kitchen counter when confronted. Because I helped Bob and Bev with their break in, I get information from the Ministerial and the commandante here in San Bruno.

Russ - 4-14-2017 at 07:01 AM

Good info Jim. Our sources differ but the basic info is similar.
Cops at coffee this morning told me the pongeros netted some big yellow tail in the majon (estuary) yesterday.:o

Pescador - 4-14-2017 at 07:09 AM

No, and thank you for your work on the radio. I listened to a couple of the interactions, and things get completely blown out of proportion when people are in an emotional state. Hopefully, all of the activity will slow things down a little bit. I would imagine that someone could make a small fortune installing video surveillance cameras right now.
