San Felipe - Quad & Wallet stolen at gunpoint

Louie800gs - 4-11-2017 at 02:32 PM

On Friday 04/7/2017 we were camping on site #’s 63-64 on the far left side of Pete's Camp and I took a ride at around 11:00p.m. 100-150 feet to the left (north) and was in front of El Dorado Ranch. I stopped there for a little while and that’s when another quad with two guys approached me coming from Pete’s camp. I didn’t think anything bad about it and I simply figured it was other campers coming from the camp. They made small talk with me in Spanish and then circled around me and returned, they got off their quad and the guy sitting in the back seat pulled a gun at me. The guy driving the quad searched my pockets and took my wallet, the guy with the gun then told me to leave at which point I ran to the edge of the beach and ran back to my campsite. I described the quad the two guys were on to the police and they mentioned that a quad like that was reported stolen 15 minutes before mine got stolen. I've been going to San Felipe for many years and have never encountered any issues. Keep your guard up and keep safe out there. Text

Been going there since late '80's, I try to keep up on incidents
there with tourists. One of the 1st involving armed robbery I
can remember, thanks for the heads up. Your post is another
I have to keep from the wife. Without too much
paranoia, for the 1st time, I've
gone thru a scenario with the wife of what I think would be an
a controlled reaction in case of a robbery, don't want her
over reacting. Crossed my mind the ratons may be from the US,
until you said they spoke Spanish

Hayzeus effing crisco.....WTF is wrong with you people..? DavidK is one of the most positive helpful people on these boards. As an "Outsider" I appreciate his passion for Baja. Some of you are just so angry, cognitively dissonant A holes it is difficult to understand.

This is why I rarely visit and even more rarely post.

chuckie - 4-12-2017 at 05:04 AM

A picture of an empty campground is "positive input"? The crime situation in Baja is a very serious issue...

chuckie - 4-12-2017 at 05:49 AM

Very trite and stupid comment....

Oh Bull. The photo added nothing of value. The stick-up was in the desert. I usually ignore David K's posts unless they are a trip report. But sometimes they just get in the way. 1/2 of them are meaningless. At least this time it was only 1 photo and not 15@@@@@######%%%%%%.

David K - 4-12-2017 at 08:14 AM

Thanks for the support and laughs gang. I only wish I had more photos of the area north. If Louie800gs doesn't like my photo in his thread, I will happily remove it. It's no big deal other than what the haters make it into. ;)

chuckie - 4-12-2017 at 08:40 AM

No haters here, only in your mind...Lotsa people tired of your nothing off topic inserts into posts that need discussion. This one is an example. Crime with a gun and the usual reluctance to publicize same. Five additional killings since the one discussed earlier .....I sure don't hate you, pity you perhaps....

norte - 4-12-2017 at 08:50 AM

To the North, in front of El Dorado, is nothing like what is in the picture.

Haters, DavidK. Where did that come from? I like your trip reports. Just wish you did not ave to post distractions on all the other posts.

Seeing the photo I know now it's looks like Rancho Grande but 2 rows deep and no privacy at all (even RG has those enclosed Palapas). Just took it off the bucket list...

Original poster said 100-150 feet north and that he ran to the "Edge of beach" then back to camp. How is that "out in the desert" Norte?
And looking at David's photo and the short distance he was north...those robbers were pretty ballsy...unless the "other campers from the camp" were some of the perhaps FEW who were there. As well this story with a solo rig in David's photo gives me the willies of loneliness in a place that has crime occurring.

The photo adds a lot if you can have a thought without the angst.

chuckie - 4-12-2017 at 09:06 AM

DK's photo was 5 weeks old...Why didn't he take one while it was happening? OH That's right , he wasn't there...

Louie800gs - 4-12-2017 at 09:33 AM

This picture shows the location I was camping at. Palapa #63-64 on the north side of the campground bordering El Dorado Ranch. The quad is Yellow with some black, Honda TRX 400EX. The bike is visible in the picture. I'll post a picture shortly.

Louie800gs - 4-12-2017 at 09:57 AM

Found out the next day they charged up $525 in charges at the Oxxo Olmos and Oxxo Los Arcos in San Felipe that same night they robbed my wallet. I asked the police if they can look at the surveillance video but as usual Mexican Police doesn't work for the benefit of the people and didn't seem like they are very interested in doing that. Luckily my bank has fraud protection and those charges will be reimbursed to me. I'm SOL on my cash that was on the wallet.

I filed a report with the PGJE as instructed by the police, called yesterday to follow up and now they are saying that the attorney Daniela Marissa Miranda Ruiz did not clarify properly in the report that the quad was stolen which is a bunch of B.S. and now they said I have to go back to San Felipe to file an addendum. I told them that it would be a 6-7 hour drive one way just to do that and if they had any other way, for example fax, email etc. and they said no. Terrible service.

That will do, every one of you doubters line up to APOLOGIZE
to the OP, you 1st DK, is that enough detail, evidence for you?

TMW - 4-12-2017 at 10:16 AM

You will most likely fine that cash always helps when dealing with Mexican authorities.

I think it was Motoged that had a motorcycle stolen in San Felipe and he got back after putting up a reward for it. He can better address it.

Your photo puts things in better perspective. Offer a reward and make sure the police know it. If it is better than what the thieves pay your quad will show up.

More important question in my mind is what the heck you doin riding around at 11pm (night) by yourself in unfamiliar territory probably.???

BajaBlanca - 4-12-2017 at 12:27 PM

boys boys boys

please stop

THIS is so upsetting, and quite unnecessary

the world is made up of different folk and no one can take away David K's right to publish whatever photos/maps he wants......period. only the original poster could comment if he / she is unhappy with it.

I sure hope you all lighten up, brighten up, make the world more beautiful. It is ugly enough as it is and needs each of us to make it more better (as my students would say)!

BajaBlanca - 4-12-2017 at 12:38 PM

hahahahaHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA

excellent paranewbi, that was a classic answer and I am giggling!

I was so unglued by the bickering that I forgot to say that I am so sorry for the whole incident. Losing a wallet and quad are horrible but being held at gunpoint (and I have had the experience) is really awful.

BornFisher - 4-12-2017 at 02:06 PM

$525 at OXXO? You would think that may raise a red flag? Instead of signing my cards, I write SEE ID on the back. So far, I`ve been only asked once, but it can`t hurt. Another thing, if you do on line banking, you can put a card on hold instantly.
Bummer of an experience, thanks for the heads up.

Louie800gs - 4-12-2017 at 02:33 PM

Anyone know what would be the best way to announce the reward? I emailed a copy to the Ministerio Publico.

Sweetwater - 4-12-2017 at 02:37 PM

Ripped, stripped and otherwise beat to chite.
I don't think you really want that quad back.
After being abused, it's been parted out for the locals consumption.
Ran into a guy on our trip last month who had a brand new Wildcat stolen in SF, I think I've understood that the area is becoming less safe related to the economy. Sad to learn that Pete's Camp isn't safe either.

Louie800gs - 4-12-2017 at 02:38 PM

I tried contacting the banks but after attempting for a long time I discovered that you cannot make 1-800 calls from Mexico. I had to google and search for the direct #'s to the banks and that took a while, due to the poor internet speeds. This is the reason I had to wait until the morning.

Not necessarily so Sweets. Many are just taken out of the area and sold. Couple of months ago a couple of motorcycles were stolen in Guerrero Negro (did I spell that right), and they were returned later that day by the police...for a reward. Atv stolen last year in La Bocana..found in Vizcaino with a few scratches but otherwise fine...for a reward. Motorcycles stolen in San Felipe at a hotel last year...returned for a reward but I can not find the info right now.

I did not offer enough for my car and garage stuff, so I was told later.

I NEVER had any problems with 800 calls...????

BajaBlanca - 4-12-2017 at 04:25 PM

That is a great poster and I hope it works. Can it be printed up in San Felipe? Maybe send it to a friend and have them print up many and post them all over town.

Bornfisher, I have simply not signed my cards but printing SEE ID is really smart.

Mom....Teach......thanks you all for the focus on the issue at hand!

BornFisher - 4-12-2017 at 04:39 PM

Yeah I had that issue trying to call vessel assist with their 800 number. Had to call my wife, had her call vessel assist and had them call me!!
As far as banking, if you have a mobile bank app on your phone, you can lock your cards. Then all you need is a cell signal and you`re good. Also if you`re afraid that someone may steal your password, set up your account to sign in with your thumb print.

kevin_in_idaho - 4-12-2017 at 05:28 PM

Good luck with finding the people or the quad. I must admit, I hate all the negativity of some people. If you don't like something, don't read it, don't post about it and just move onto another thread.

I've enjoyed a lot of the info and posts on this forum and hope it can stay civil.

motoged - 4-12-2017 at 06:23 PM

As Tom (TMW) mentioned, here is a brief version of my SF moto theft experience 2014:

Parked 690 KTM outside bakery at 6:00 pm for 5 minutes (needed a post-taco donut, ya know)...walked outside and bike had been rolled away with helmet on bars.

Freaked out, called police, reported it....figured out I would make reward posters and spread them around town at small moto/offroad type shops....In Spanish, the poster had a bike pic and said:
*** $15,000 MP reward...Sin policia/sin preguntas and mentioned could be returned to Kiki's Motel ***

Got the bike back within 48 hours.

The bike was worth about $18,000 CDN...and worth the reward.

It was returned by a family member from one of the moto shops....right across the street from the bakery !!!! Kiki told me that one of the family's children saw who rolled the bike away and told the parents (and that the guy was not one of the known moto thieves in SF)...and a son in his early 20's returned the bike and got the money...a few months salary for somebody, but worth it to me.

Kiki vouched for the family, but as I posted sin preguntas, I didn't play detective.

Moral of the story....I need to cut down on my carb intake

I agree, late nights on beach in unfamiliar places can be risky..as is carrying too much loot, etc....cuz you don't need your wallet on such a romp.

amigobaja - 4-12-2017 at 06:49 PM

i noticed the Calif. flag flying in the pic. Well when you come from one free gun zone to another you should not be surprised when someone who does not understand the importance of abiding by the free zone pulls a gun on you and takes your stuff. In northern Nevada where I live they either hide these kind of crimes from the public or they don't happen because more then likely the guy you try to take the quad from has a bigger gun. Suck it up and cry to all the people at home. Maybe more gringos will be scared and stay up there.

chuckie - 4-13-2017 at 02:54 AM

I think this forum has had a crazy magnet attached to it..This gobbledy gook spouted by amigobaja is an example.....Hard to take much of anything seriously here anymore...

Thanks For Your Post

Lobsterman - 4-13-2017 at 05:42 AM

I'm sorry about your loss but it is only replaceable stuff, even the cash. You is what matters most to your family and friends.

We 6 old farts are heading to Gonzaga Bay (3 trucks and 3 boats) in about a month to fish for a week. DK was so kind as to post a pic of the hotel we will be staying at on the beach. I'm a road trip guy who enjoys traveling around the local areas looking at the beautiful topography and local history sites and locations. We will definitely be more diligent then usual while roaming around and will go in groups if we do. Since we are in bed fast asleep by 8pm after a dinner of fish we caught that day along with a glass or two of fine Mexican wines we pick up along the way, night time adventures is out of the question for us.

Hope your reward for your quad works and you get it back in one piece.

Most of the dirt bikes ripped off are not parted out.Just sold cheap the local police almost always know the thief. Your reward poster to the police best. Hope you get it back.

BajaTed - 4-13-2017 at 08:36 AM

Data point:

2008, La Perlita, S.F. The guy with the lease got stopped at gun point and threatened. He then hooked his trailer up and burnt his Palapala to the ground. Next morning, told everyone the bad guys did it and he was lucky to live.

He lied through his teeth, its about all you can do.

My friend has never been back and does all he can to bad mouth the place, don't blame him one bit.

As for all the banter within the post.

Remember, people come to Baja for reasons, nuff said there:bounce:

chuckie - 4-13-2017 at 09:54 AM

OK? So.....

bajabuddha - 4-13-2017 at 08:04 PM

To the OP......
Please do not take offense to this, but think about your initial actions; if I was camped on the beach, soothed by the lullaby of waves lapping on the shoreline at 11:00 pm and trying to assuage my nerves from hectic life to Baja dreams and somebody drove by me and the surf on their (of course MUFFLERED) quad at that time of night I might wanna steal the damned thing, drive it into the surf as far out as it would go at low tide and swim back to shore....

I'm not trying to condescend on you, or justify the perp's deeds by robbing you at gunpoint... but too often us Gringos tend to think "Aw, it's Mexico... there are NO rules !". But nay-nay..... there's contemplation and retrospect. Being out by yourself at that hour (Baja Midnight is usually between 7 and 8 pm when people go to bed) and making a target of yourself shows a lack of judgment, especially an area now known for economic downfall and increased crime.

On that note, if stupidity was a crime we'd all spend at least one night in jail, and I'd be in for Life with no possibility of parole. I trusted in a beach camp that I thought would protect me and had my outboard motor stolen almost 10 years ago, and learned valuable lessons from it.

Just sayin', amigo. Again, no harm intended.

honda tom - 4-13-2017 at 10:24 PM

Bajabudda such a fool.... 7 and 8 to hang it up. and these other idiots chuckie and norte and martyman to rub on DK for his love of BAJA and sharing it. You are the ones that don't understand what BAJA is all about. Its about stories and sharing! Every trip I return from we all say man we got some great stories, and most of the newbies have a bunch of photos. I don't take too many photos anymore. but always enjoy seeing them.
riding a quad down the beach at 11pm... priceless. I might have stayed near my ride as i saw another approaching, for a quick getaway if needed. but now he knows.

chuckie - 4-14-2017 at 12:04 AM

Thank you for your input Honda turd.! I have often wondered what Baja is all about...You cleared it right up...

chuckie - 4-14-2017 at 04:35 AM

bajabuddha - 4-14-2017 at 05:14 AM

Geez, I camped on the beach for 20 years so I didn't have to sleep in town with all the late night revelry. Did so for PEACE AND QUIET. Didn't know I was 'such a fool'. Sure wish I was as smart as you, Tommy. I guess i'll have to reevaluate my courtesy for fellow campers and be more selfish for those late night romps. After all, the world is all about me, and i'm the only one here, right?

I also respect your bromance with DK and your right to be a card-carrying member of his Fan Club Fraternity.... doesn't mean I have to. Some people like Justin Bieber and the Oakland Raiders too, fine and dandy. Cada loco con su tema.

Baja, and Mexico in general, is much more than a Gringo playground.

dtbushpilot - 4-14-2017 at 08:22 AM

This is Louie800's first post and nobody welcomed him (or her) to Nomads, where are our manners? Welcome to Nomads Louie, I hope you get your stuff back. The usual group of Nomad dipchits trashed your first post, apparently they didn't have manners in the first place. I'm sure they hope you will post something again so they can continue with their miserable existence. Most seem to move on to other Baja info sites.....oh well..

Gulliver - 4-14-2017 at 08:46 AM

I am saying NOTHING about the original poster and I am horrified by his experience. Thugs are thugs.

A separate issue that seems to have come up (again); behavior of gringos and some Mexicans. It is NOT true that it is a normal thing to raise hell all night. It does happen on holiday weekends and is ignored by civilized people as being what children do.

Drinking and hanging out in bars and generally behaving as if you were from Texas is just low rent behavior and you know it. Some Mexicans do it. All too many gringos do it. It's ugly and stupid and I wish some people would grow up rather than come down here and act like they were fifteen years old and away from their mothers for the first time.

Fortunately most Mexicans know the difference and groan along with us when the see some slob roaring around with a beer in his hand. I can scarcely believe how forgiving they are.

This isn't spring break at Ft. Lauderdale. Don't come down here to raise hell and offend everyone. Leave the muffler on your ride and do your wheelies out in the desert.

Maybe you behave that way at home. I doubt it. Human beings live here. Respect that.

If you haven't figured it out already this is club..kinda like a chicken coop or hen house.. DT is the sergeant at arms and only posts when called out by the rooster. You need to pay homage to be a member.

If you notice, there are only a few that offered advice on how to deal with your situation...and they were not the club members...They were ******pilots dipchits. Does that tell you something.

David, I said I like your trip reports....but do you have to post on everything. You can not just ignore because they are everywhere. When you post 15 photos that contribute nothing to the tread it makes it almost impossible to get towards the end. Stick to trip reports or other things you actually know about.

I'm fine with the pictures.

I'm not good at all about taking and posting pictures about my rides and when he digs through his collection and shows what the place looks like it adds a lot.

All here priceless!

JoeJustJoe - 4-15-2017 at 12:00 PM

11pm at night, while looking down a barrel of a gun, you could tell this is the same exact ATV that was stolen in a Facebook photo?

So what do we have here, serial ATV thieves.

Some elements of this story are strange, but it's best left to the police, and insurance company to sort out.

Bornfisher, I have simply not signed my cards but printing SEE ID is really smart.

Mom....Teach......thanks you all for the focus on the issue at hand!

Like bornFisher I sign my cards 'check id' leaving the card blank gives the thieves the opportunity to sign the card, then use it with matching signatures.

Louie800gs - 4-17-2017 at 12:39 PM

I agree with many of you that riding at 11:00 p.m. is unsafe. It just never crossed my mind that I could get robbed at gunpoint right off my campsite and right off a well known campground that I have visited for many years without any issues. I've raced the Baja races in the past and pre-ran hundreds of miles in the middle of the desert in the San Felipe area and that's were I would imagine I would of gotten robbed of all places. My fiancé and I do many rides in our BMW800gs down in Baja and been to Bahia of LA through Coco's corner etc. and had never had any issues, including camping in Mike's Sky ranch with no one else around. I let my guard down that night because of the trust and my long experiences of not having any issues in Baja. Regarding the wallet, I never carry a wallet and that evening I pulled it from the RV to buy some cocos and forgot to put it back. Lesson learned and now going forward I'm going to have to keep my guard up and learn from this experience. The gun thing is what I never expected in San Felipe and that's really the main reason why I posted here on this post, to make other people aware of the risk of bad people with guns cruising that beach. Stay safe out there......

Quad was recovered early this week and I picked it up yesterday. It has a nasty coat of black spray paint all over but seems to be in overall not so bad condition.

To you: pipe down, just sayin'

bajabuddha - 6-1-2017 at 12:49 PM

To JZ, KMA. Free Country and all. Just sayin'.

you would be pretty stupid to use bear spray in response to a gun. better to just give up your wallet and quad, and live for another day

BajaBlanca - 6-13-2017 at 09:22 AM

That is wonderful news that you got the quad back! That is good karma for sure. Way to go.

Franco, you'll get used to the goathead. You gave him exactly the reaction he gets off on, prolly made his whole day. Even if you ignore him he won't go away, but at least you're not giving him his jollies.

Welcome to Nomads, BTW..... even if it was the hard way. Also, air guns are legal in Mexico. However, don't bring a knife to a gunfight.

Franco - 6-13-2017 at 02:40 PM

Me thinks he puts the BAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA in BAJa.

David K - 6-13-2017 at 03:53 PM

You are a nice addition to Baja Nomad, Franco!

Hook - 6-13-2017 at 06:33 PM

If you follow the money, the reward probably goes from the victim to a cut for the POlice, to a cut for the perps, if no one was arrested. Cops contact perps (or vice versa) and set up a place to leave the ATV. Cops retrieve, Cops get money, perps get money. Gringo gets ATV back. It's win-win-win, right?

Not that far off from the drug cartel scenario, really.

What a country!!!

Good Point!An example:

Bringing a Knife to a Gunfight: Here’s a little lesson from township top cop Mike Chitwood: Never take a knife to a gunfight. That’ the unfortunate lesson learned the hard way Saturday morning when a man who confronted another man with another knife wound up on the short end of the fight when his victim pulled out a gun. After repeatedly warning his attacker, the man shot him in the leg, police said. Upper Darby [PA[ police continue to investigate what they are calling a self-defense shooting in the Drexel Hill section of the township. The man shot, a 60-year-old Morton resident, sustained a bullet wound to the knee, shortly after 11 a.m. Sunday June 11, according to police Superintendent Michael Chitwood... According to Chitwood, the shooter, a 24-year-old Bridgeport resident was walking on Bridge Street near James Street, from the 7-Eleven store on Baltimore Pike, with another man, 30, of Drexel Hill, when they were approached by two men who pulled up in a car. “The two men, a father and son got out of the car and walk up to the shooter with a knife asking ‘who’s Kyle’ and the shooter says, ‘you need to know I got a gun,’” Chitwood said. “He kept saying, ‘I got a gun, I got a gun, I got a gun.’ He has a concealed weapon permit for a 9 mm. The shooter pulls the gun out and hangs it at his side. Then the knife-wielding man comes toward him and he shoots him in the knee. He told us he purposely shot him in the leg. He warned him numerous times when he came at him before he fired.” According to Chitwood, police recovered the 9-mm handgun and a knife that looked like a gun at the scene...

So? As usual you don't get it. Couldn't be a better example of a knife vs gun.

Off subject, but If it had been a cop in the same situation he wouldn't have gone for the knee but instead gone "center mass" and emptied his 15 round clip.

chuckie - 6-15-2017 at 01:47 PM

OH, I got it...I just don't know what it has to do with anything on this thread.

Alm - 7-15-2017 at 08:53 PM

Hanging out in ATV on a secluded beach (which David's photo nicely illustrated), and doing this at 11 pm... Well, this is what gringos do. The whole SF stretch has become gringolandia to the point that they forgot where they are. Just stating the obvious.

Belongs in the "General" rather than in "Trip Reports", IMO.
