Punta Chivato Hotel

Marc - 4-16-2017 at 08:41 AM

The place looks closed. What's the story?

Russ - 4-16-2017 at 10:43 AM

New owner. It was booked, I heard, this week. Off season but the restaurant is open so the Hotelito should be also.

What about the "old" hotel? Wassup with it? Had lots of great times there...

AKgringo - 4-16-2017 at 11:08 AM

I stopped at a restaurant/bar just after Thanksgiving, and it was closed. It was on a Monday around noon, and I have heard that I got there on their day off.

I did not check for a room.

Are you guys talking about the original 1960s hotel called Borrego de Oro first than Hotel Punta Chivato after), or the little place not near the water where locals meet and drink?

chuckie - 4-16-2017 at 01:39 PM

Original..Todays status?

David K - 4-16-2017 at 02:48 PM

Was there in Feb with Russ who gave an excellent tour. We walked through the original and it is sadly closed and in disrepair. Such a perfect location, too.

The restaurant closes after Sunday breakfast and reopens on Tuesday. There should be someone available for rooms though. There is another restaurant. There should still be a sign out on the road just North of the Hotelito.

Shame DK, Seems it has come full circle..My Daughter and I "Camped" in one of the rooms back in the 70's...It was sort of closed then, the room had no roof and the place was being renovated by a guy from Oregon, I remember later bringing the "big" boat (Anticipation) up from Mulege. We would anchor out, radio the hotel, and they would come and get us and fetch us for dinner...Usually we would get rooms and stay over...Good memories...

That pretty much dates you... and your daughter chuckie. Wish I could have seen it back then.

Disagree, he is often a very wise man...

My father in law has a book about the building of that hotel (if we are talking about the now defunct but most recently named Hotel Posada de las Flores) back in the day. We finally had dinner there in 2012 - terrible everything!

We used to laugh because the hotel website always showed the place booked but there were rarely guests staying there. We always assumed it was a money laundering operation!

Yep... I think the book is called "One Hell of a Ride" or something like that? When the Italian fellow bought the Hotel Punta Chivato, he totally changed who it was marketed to, changed the name, and ruined it.

BajaMama - 4-18-2017 at 10:24 AM

Yes, that is the book David. One factor in the closing was the owner stole water - didn't pay for it. I recall a rumor that the water guy put dye in the water to see if he was stealing it and sure enough! It is a shame such a beautifully placed property is vacant. If I had 3 million laying around I would buy it...
