Tecate or San Ysidro?

JZ - 5-24-2017 at 11:09 AM

We usually cross at Nogales or Mexicali and haven't go through SD in a couple years.

Coming down from LA around 1pm. What's the better way to go, Tecate or San Ysidro. Hoping to land in San Quintin the first night.

If San Ysidro, what's the best place for us to meet up with someone in Mexico that is flying into TIJ earlier in the day?

Bob and Susan - 5-24-2017 at 12:25 PM

that's a lousy idea...unless
you like to take the "tour of tj"

I was just on Blvd 2000...it sucks

let the friends come to you...

at home depot there are coffee shops...Walmart...eating places
lots of PARKING

not really that far

WAY better

here...I made a map for for you...

Corredor 2000 has a four unexpected "dips" near the West end, but this road is about as good as it gets here in Baja.
Yes, it needs a little maintenance, but the road is nowhere near the bad shape of the roads in the Ensenada area. Pot holes and crevasses. Yes, they are starting to fill some of them this week on the South end of Ensenada, but the drivers are constantly darting all over the transpeninsular highway to avoid the large holes.

The Tecate to Ensenada Hwy (Mex 3) is now a dream drive!

cross at Otay pick em up at the airport and head down blvd 2000. don't listen to Susan...she hates everything ;)

Bob and Susan - 5-24-2017 at 02:07 PM

one of the problems using the blvd 2000 is...
at the end you have to drive A LONG way to get to the toll road

the cement road isn't anywhere like it was when the road opened

the toll road is a much nicer ride for a vacation

About 3hrs. Won't pick them up at the airport. They can taxi anywhere.

san ysidro.
your amigo can take taxi from airport to CECUT museum or sanborns cafe in zona rio, and pass the time before you meet up there - or if timing is right, pick up your amigo at the airport.
many places to meet in TJ.

if driving between SY and the airport, drive by "la mona" and admire the naked-lady-as-house (and a similar house, "la sirena" just south of rosarito).

Do you mean you're going to meet them where you get your FMM at San Ysidro? If so, I don't think that's going to work.

soylent_green - 5-24-2017 at 03:02 PM

otay -
You don't want your friend to meet where you get the Tourist Card in Otay. Only way to get there on foot is a whole lot of walking in the wrong direction

meet at the mini gastronomic zone of otay- middle point between the airport and the border crossing

https://www.google.com/maps/place/Centro+Comercial,+Otay+Con...

Get lunch
Chewins for seafood or
Guiseppis for old school TJ Italian
then get a bunch of burritos at the Bol Corona there for the road.

Probably every taxi driver knows where Chewins is.

then head east on the same road and it will get you to BLD 2000

---
truth be told, you can just as easily swing by the airport and get your friend. 5 minutes. Once you cross, take first right and go west on bellas artes. then make a right about a mile down on the road to the airport. super easy

from that taxi drop in your picture, there is no way you can walk to the immigration office. Even if you could get around the wall there, you would have to walk through the southbound cars and inspection facility. not goin go happen

Can they walk to where the visa office is from the taxi drop? I assume yes, as you can at every other border crossing.

no. very bad advice.
if you are insistent on crossing in San Ysidro and meeting up with your friends, just have them meet you nearby at The Costco rio (not the one in La Mesa)
BLVD. RODOLFO SÁNCHEZ TABOADA #8943
ZONA URBANA RIO
22010
TIJUANA, BAJA CALIFORNIA

its like 3 minutes across the border. But if you ask me, Id rather cross in otay and swing by the airport - eazy peazy - than do the whole meetup thing and then work your way back to the road to Playas and south.

its your deal though

maybe. probably not.
i would not send any friend of mine to that taxi drop off location, then tell them to scramble across barrier and 15 traffic lanes,...
tell your friends to enjoy a nice meal in TJ, and pick up your friends at the restaurant.

Ok, I think I have enough info to be dangerous. I'm sure they don't want to sit around the airport for 3 hours. goats meal advice is more the thought. Probably hook up at Costco as you mention.

Hi Dennis check your UTU

TedZark - 5-28-2017 at 02:14 PM

San Ysidro or even Otay, but still take the toll road. Highway 2000 is a dump. Full of litter and crappy neighborhoods. Bumpy road.

Life is short, take the toll road with the beautiful views. Even from Otay it might take you only 10-12 minutes longer to drive over to the toll road. Even when I need to cross at Otay, I take the toll road all the way to TJ (coming up vs going down).
