Here are two photos showing the rust on my patio roof, about a year old. anyone else have this issue?SFandH - 6-7-2017 at 07:37 AM
Being that close to the salt water is tough on all metals except, perhaps, stainless steel. I know, I live at the beach and I'm constantly fighting
rust. All my patio/garden stuff is either wood or plastic.
But that looks pretty bad for only one year. Was it sold as galvanized steel? If so IMHO it's defective. You could clean and paint to slow the rusting
but you will need to repaint every couple of years.
I built a covered patio and used the plastic corrugated roofing, lexan I think. It was the most expensive kind. No problems after 5 years.

Wow, I was gonna go tha t route as well. Get a sprayer and use POR15. Stands for paint over rust. It stops the oxidation. shari - 6-7-2017 at 08:18 AM
that is what many of us use for roofing and here at La Bufadora, the air is super salty...more than BOLA so we paint that tin roof stuff first and
repaint every couple years....I like the idea of POR!
It does last longer than the roll roofing which only last about a year here as it cracks with all the expansion and contraction due to the drastic
temperature changes.SFandH - 6-7-2017 at 08:31 AM
hahahaha, they're selling pre-rusted roofing. Too much.
kudos to the marketing department.Bob and Susan - 6-7-2017 at 04:27 PM
in those pictures the metal sheets look like painted steel not rust-proof stuff...
the woods not painted yet so you need to
paint...
just paint everything dark brown and you'll never notice the rust
someone told me once..."paint hides a multitude of sins"bajabuddha - 6-7-2017 at 04:35 PM
Ah, the price of paradise..... pacificobob - 6-7-2017 at 04:45 PM
POR is an effective product. but, not cheap. the cost of doing metal roofing (both sides) would be staggering. i know of lots of metal roofing doing
rather well close to salt water. i would guess there is a full spectrum of qualities in metal roof coatings.El Jefe - 6-8-2017 at 09:34 AM
Lifetime eh? The race is on. Which will rust out faster, the roof or Santiago??
There is a line in a B52s song about Tin Roof Rusted. Interesting the source of that line in Love Shack
over ten years and our steel building in gonzaga bay has not a speck of rust, amazing the difference between coasts!
at this juncture I'd rather put up with some rust though......

Willard, Santiago's roof is in BdeLA. bledito - 6-8-2017 at 12:08 PM
a complete seal is required no voids whatsoever or it will rust any where air can get at it epoxy is a good coating that is used on underground steel
above ground you would need to overcoat the epoxy with something else that is UV tolerant. look up cathodic protection for aboveground steel
structures.bledito - 6-8-2017 at 12:11 PM
it looks like it may be poorly galvanized steel the galvanization appears sporadic.willardguy - 6-8-2017 at 07:14 PM
my mistake! BOLA must be rustier than Gbay I guess! mtgoat666 - 6-8-2017 at 07:20 PM
That's patina! Usually, you pay extra for that aesthetic.
If I were you I would stain the wood, and let the metal go. Embrace the rustic look, it's baja after all.
Choose a wood stain color that goes well with the rust/galvanizing colors.AKgringo - 6-8-2017 at 07:26 PM
About the time I was born (1947) my grandfather bought an army surplus Quonset Hut, and set it up on property he bought near Grass Valley CA.
It is still in great shape, and will out live me! That area had over 100 inches of rain this season.yumawill - 6-11-2017 at 07:47 AM
Chinese metal plating. Or you wer'nt sposed to liv dis lng. Old chinese proverb.Doug/Vamonos - 6-27-2017 at 03:33 PM
Well...we do live 100' from the Sea of Cortez! I plan on painting mine with the red elastomeric roofing paint. Same stuff Doc put on my casita in the
pic. I did notice one of my new steel panics oxidizing a little more than the others. I agree with the edict to build for my life. I figure I've got
ten good years left in me! Hopefully the casa stands that long.chuckie - 6-27-2017 at 04:10 PM
Metal roofing is strange, We have really severe weather here with hail up to baseball size, wind rain snow and extreme sun..all of our buildings now
have metal roofs...panels on the same roof react differently, as to fade Rust...etc...The good news is none of them leak....BajaNomad - 7-14-2017 at 08:58 AM
Timestamp issue resolved.surfhat - 7-14-2017 at 09:18 AM
I recently found some corrugated metal roofing at Dixieline in San Diego that is miles above the quality I saw at Home Depot.
It has a smooth sealed finished surface on it that looks to seal the metal from rusting. The clean look is far superior to the open galvanized metal
at Home Depot and with the metal base is stronger than the plastic versions. It was a touch more, but the difference is well worth it. Food for
thought.
Thanks to all here.Doug/Vamonos - 7-14-2017 at 12:26 PM
Was at the Bay last week and looked at your roofing. You're not kidding! I was really surprised at the amount of rust! I'm guessing all the rust
underneath is from condensation? You would think the galvanizing would prevent that. I decided to put lamina plastica on my patio roof after seeing
yours.woody with a view - 7-14-2017 at 12:27 PM
Doug where did you get the plastic lamina?
Edit: i'm looking at a Suntuf polycarbonate product from H-Depot but
Reviews are not encouraging. Might just go plywood and torchdown.

Reyna is shopping for me. I told her about the stuff at HD. She said she can find it cheaper. I'll probably do it the week of Labor Day. I'll let you
know. The stuff on my old place has held up for 12-13 years. I'm also thinking of just using cardon like at Libby and Pete's place. I like the natural
look and don't mind some sun getting through. If Doc would let me I'd do palm fronds.
