Baby Chicks

Can we transport (driving) baby chicks across the border? This is Carol, not Roger! Thanks, if anyone knows.

You don't say which direction you want to take the chickees, but I think both countries will want to protect their poultry industry from avian flue!

I could be wrong, but I think it is a bad, if not illegal idea.

From US to Mexico! Maybe I will just take fertile eggs and incubate them. I want a chicken coop at our casa!! :-) I know I can probably get all the chickens I want in Mexico. I just would like to have certain breeds.

I haven't heard a peep about the rules (Sowwy, couldn't resist:D)... but seeing as how it's getting even stricter for domesticated pets crossing southbound, I think you're going to be SOL on this one. I'd suggest investigating what breeds (the ones you want) are available.... there are more pollos than peeps...er, people in Baja.

Mexican Agriculture control can be a pain in the ars. There is a separate person at the customs for these items, and she knows her thing. Most certain that raw eggs are not allowed, being in the same, i.e. prohibited, poultry class. When they are not sure, they won't let it in. Your only chance is... just that - a chance, i.e. that they won't stop your car for secondary. If they do, then you'd better have very few eggs and pack them like a normal food item, in a styrofoam egg-pack.

Carol, you may be surprised at chicken selection in Mexicali. Try asking in Spanish on Facebook or ???
We don't want the wife of a Baja racing champion in a Mexican jail for chicken smuggling!

I have a pet bird - thought I had all the paperwork but nooooo, I was warned by US side that Mexico could seize and kill him. Even worse if I tried to bring him back into the USA, he would have to be quarantined in either Atlanta or NYC. Needless to say Buster Tweeton stays home in Nor Cal.

If you want to leave the chickens in Mexico, good to go, but don't plan on bringing them back to USA.

Just a sidebar here, but found this 11-minute film about Roger Mears racing the Baja 1000 in the Jeep Honcho Truck... pretty cool stuff from over 35 years ago!
