There is only one way to go to Baja and that is the Nomad Way!
First, always get your pesos on the American side. They're a lot more expensive but, they do not accept dollars in Mexico.

Always stay at Nomad approved hotels! 1st night Jardines, 2nd night Baja Cactus, 3rd night Rice & Beans. All these hotels are in non-scenic locations so that you have time to do a thorough inspection of the sheets for pubic hair. And, all these hotels have overpriced gringo restaurants nearby so you can actually see other gringos (instead of Mexicans) nearby (don't worry, if they're gear heads they won't talk to you)

Never camp in Baja. Outdoor adventuring is overrated and you might get stung by a scorpion.

Never wave or stop to help anyone. Mexico is the murder capitol of the universe and you may be next. Keep your doors locked and never speak Spanish.

Always..I mean never...drink the water from those big bottles. Tap water is the way to go and most of the fixtures are old so the lead and copper has already leached out.

Don't forget to get your tourist papers in the US. You'll have to stop at the border to get them stamped but the extra 4 hours of running around is well worth it.

Always cross at Tecate! It is another 4 hours out of the way but the cops in Tecate are nicer and never pull you over.

Can you remember back to the first time? Everything is a little scary, especially for a woman, alone. It all becomes overwhelming, quite easily.

So, funny as it is, and Martyman, you did a GREAT job at making me laugh........I think the first time one should do exactly as you posted in ridicule -

fmm no matter where you are going
jardines or cactus inn or I think La Huerta in San Ignacio blablabla

I can! And didn't know enough to be scared. Drove a 1950 Mercury, unregistered, that I had bought from a guy at the Destroyer base for not much.Went south till we couldn't go any further...Likely not far? But seemed like it...Got hooked, never quit going...Loved Baja....Year was 1957...

I've heard, but never seen, the mythical bus load of tourists
on the way to Guadalupe Valley clogging up Mex Imm at San
Ysidro crossing, therefore making it worthwhile to get the
online fmm, that remains a mystery to me. I crossed back
at Tecate once in 35 yrs, although scenic, didn't think I would
ever make it to San Diego. You are not a group of 1, all of
us blowhards think we set the keystone at the Loreto Mission,
BN still remains, at least to me, a valued source of info for what?

Oh yea, and in 1972 my buddy and I drove the peninsula just as fast as Parnelli Jones and Bill Stroppe did in our stock Saab. No really we did, Honest.

All diesels can run on Baja fuel, as long as you get back Stateside before your warranty runs out. Even for a few months.
