Horse Races in Bahia Asuncion...Do Daaah...Do Daaah

As usual there was a horse race in Asuncion to celebrate Father's Day as well as a big dance. We invited our guests from our Inn and the cruisers off their sailboats to the race and they loved the cultural experience of it.
I won and lost a race so came out even. Here are some of the sights from the afternoon. I LOVE that big dappled gray horse our amigo has!

Here is the gringo contingent starring our own Rossman!

and our neighbours had fun with the visitors too

the winning family owners of the horse

and the band plays for the spectators between races!

For those of you traveling in Baja over the summer, many towns have their traditional fiestas that feature horse races and rodeos so take one if if you can!

What beautiful horses, they look so noble.
The riding saddles for the other horses are unique in design too, love the stirrups. No cactus in your boots.

Very cool. Been to a few in San Ignacio - definitely a true Baja experience!

oh yes! Friendly and sometimes not so friendly when the race is so close that even the photo finish doesnt declare a winner. Depending on the horses running there can be some large bets....I have known people to bet their vehicles. It is a serious business in these parts and betting is a huge part of it.
I love all the preamble....the best horses arrive late, and closely watched by the aficionados as they back out of the trailer, get their legs wrapped, costume on etc. Some are obviously overdosed with "vitamins", some wrap a leg to make it look like it has a problem...to drive up the odds....lots of psychological posturing etc....so fascinating.

then there are the impromptu things that happen like horses going off the track into the crowd, clandestine c-ck fights, dancing on the track by both vaqueros & horses, music and a fun race can bust out at any minute and all of a sudden there are 3 or 4 horsed barrelling down the 1/4 mile track.
It is my favorite sport here in the village.

Such beautiful horses and I agree that the dappled one is a beauty!

The Punta Abreojos fiesta is coming up ! I don't know if they have horse races but I bet they do.
