LED Fog lights. PICS ADDED

acadist - 6-29-2017 at 02:24 PM

Thinking about adding more light to my 2009 F150. Have any of you made this upgrade? Did you replace the stock fog lights or add lights? Before all the road advice comes I am not planning to drive at night but want to be ready for anything.

Ready for anything? Ready for what?
Stock lights have always suited me fine for being ready for driving at night, on pavement or off, ready for anything, so to speak. I have occasionally kept a hand-spot light in the vehicle for supplemental light.
At night, on and off pavement, I don't drive fast enough to need additional lighting.

I have Baja Design LEDs and love them. They are a and are very helpful in figuring out what is best for you. I added lights and kept the stock fog. They are not cheap, I prefer over Rigid LED's

https://www.bajadesigns.com/
I drive at night sometimes and they are very handy to have.

bajaguy - 6-29-2017 at 03:30 PM

I put a 20" LED light bar on both of my trucks that I use in Baja. They are great for rural areas. They have floodlight LED's on each end and spot LED's in the middle. Run cool, are plenty bright to pick up people or cows on the roadway. A great safety item

Also added small LED's on the rear bumper, way better than standard back up lights

Am thinking of ditching my incandescent fog lights for LED's......maybe this winter

StuckSucks - 6-29-2017 at 03:37 PM

I swapped out the virtually-useless fog lights for some LEDS from Rigid Industries - they throw a ton of DOT-unfriendly light. These have a flood pattern. Like all things Rigid, these were a little spendy.

Thanks for the input, it is the kind of information I am looking for

Jim, got a link for the Rigid fog LED conversion. Was yours originally the H10s (as my 2010 Tacoma has)?

Here is a brand being mentioned on Tacoma World, on sale now... they have LED, HID, and Halogen bulbs:

Dave, do it right and get a bar to mount a LED bar and a couple of KCs. Driving at night isn't so scary with this setup.

woody with a view - 6-29-2017 at 06:19 PM

The LEDs light up your right now and the KCs can be aimed to scatter light across the center line as well as the shoulder up to 50-75 yards down range, double what your hibeams do.

That top picture looks like it should be used in a Toyota ad. Great picture.

I was thinking of a light bar in the grill but my grill will not allow it without major modification. I was thinking of adding the fog lights along with this setup, http://www.americanmuscle.com/delta-d-bra-led-driving-light-...

BigBearRider - 6-29-2017 at 07:13 PM

I got a 55 inch LED light bar from Amazon for about $60 a couple of years ago. I also got the small spot and flood lights, 4 for $40 or so, and mounted on two motorcycles. All were cheap, but have worked flawlessly. Look around, there are plenty of options that have received 4 or 5 stars. Given the positive experience I have had, I have a hard time justifying paying a lot for brand name LEDs.

acadist - 6-30-2017 at 12:35 PM

Thanks for all the suggestions. I decided to go with the Baja Designs 4 light clusters that replace the fog lights. Each cluster is 20 watts compared to the replacement bulbs that are 3-5 watts. The clusters have 2 spots and 2 wide angle LEDs. Customer service was great! I had trouble ordering online so called old school, they gave me the 4th discount ( free shipping ) and an additional 10% off. Pictures will be coming!

Great... the Baja Designs factory is just down the road from me. Ask for Bailey if you need anything.

Sorry DK, no idea. Whatever my truck came with (which was close to ineffective).

Thanks! That was in a canyon south of Whitney Portal. The second photo was taken in January on the Red Cloud Mine Road (50 miles east of Indio).

Timestamp issue resolved.

Doug/Vamonos - 7-14-2017 at 12:22 PM

Absolutely upgrade all your lights. Just keep the primary lights stock and aimed correctly or you will drive all drivers in Baja crazy. In my case I have all my offroad lights wired to relays that are triggered with my high beams. That way I can quickly turn them off whenever I have approaching traffic. No way would I drive at night without them. A true life saver. I see everything on the road well in advance so I can slow or avoid.

Uno mas, on the road to Laurel Lakes, Eastern Sierras, taken a few days ago. We were stopped by deep snow just below 10,000' elevation.

Deep snow, in July, amazing!

You can ski and snowboard at Mammoth Mountain for about another month. All creeks and lakes are FULL.

Install was great, less than 2 hours to fit in the fog light housing. My shine the light on the garage tests look great, can't wait to get a real chance to check them out. I will try to post some pics. BTW, David. Bailey no longer works there now. I called to delay my shipping so that the box did not sit on the porch while I was in CO and was informed.

Wow, he was the entire voice of Baja Designs on the Internet. Thanks for the heads up... I will see what his last post on Tacoma World says.

Sorry, I did not take any pictures of the install but in a nutshell:
I bought the Squadron sport with the Tacoma/F150 install kit, less than $300. The install kit is a bezel that you install in between the lense and the standard square bezel, easy with an Allen wrench. Watched a YouTube video on how to remove the stock light and the new light fits in very nicely and bolts into the housing through the tabs that hold the stock light. Follow the advice in the meager instructions to use a piece of tape to hold the installation nuts in place, it made it much easier to line up the bolts by feel, box head wrench worked real well, not enough room for a ratchet. I installed on the ground, if it was lifted with the tires off it would have taken minutes!

It´s unbelievable how much light these little suckers produce. Makes night driving almost safe.
